@@FootedGhost i could be wrong but i’m pretty sure they only removed it for ranked play. The problem imho isn’t safety measures because you sort of can’t with stuff like this without actively monitoring every conversation (which is gross for obvious reasons). I think the only solution while maintaining full proximity chat is for people to have a cup of concrete and harden the fuck up. Someone’s being a dick online? Boohoo feed it back to them or mute them. If they really persist then block them. It’s literally that simple.

The actual answer is difficult. No matter what solution you come up with someone will try to abuse it. The challenge is finding the least abusable solution. I'm betting that they will have to deal with it on multiple fronts.

I think its more annoying because they use an virtue signaling reason for removing it. The reason modern games cut down on social features has nothing to do with toxicity. Thats just the excuse. it has everything to do with Engagement optimized matchmaking and disbanding lobbies. Its all about controlling the players social experience to the point that they stay in the game as long as possible. Social features go agiasn't manipulating the players matches and putting them into bot lobbies.

A combination of a few toggles in the settings menu could have fixed this. - VOICE CHAT RECEIVING: Toggles whether you hear team-wide voice chat - VOICE CHAT SENDING: toggles whether you can send team-wide voice chat. Maybe also allows you to pick push to talk versus automatic - PROX CHAT RECEIVING: Toggles whether you to hear proximity voice chat around you - PROX CHAT SENDING: Toggles whether your voice chat is sent in proximity too (there could also be a separate button for this than team-wide or lobby-wide voice chat) If team-wide voice chat is enabled by default while proximity chat is off by default but available in the settings, players who seek it out can still turn it on, but will learn it isn’t always reliable for vital communications since not everyone has it on, so I think the trash talk would stay in PROX while important callouts would go in team chat.

The Internet back then used to be so wild and raw that nobody cared about your feelings, probably still don’t today. Remember the MW2 lobbies? They were insane and filled with so much raunchy language. It’s crazy that big companies like Microsoft and Sony are playing it safe so they don’t get sued in a legal court case by such people. If there are some proximity chat games that I can recall there’s like TF2, RD2 Online, Chivalry, etc. so the other AA to AAA games that somewhat have that. I’m pretty sure I got shadowbanned on MW2 2022 for no reason and that’s fine because I’m not gonna play that game anymore lol Good video

I honestly couldn’t care less if Halo has proximity chat or not. My experience with voice chat in video games has always been just people being annoying and toxic, or that one guy who’s blasting mic feedback or garbled music into your ears the entire match. Maybe I was just in the wrong lobbies back in the day, but I’ve never once had a meaningful interaction in the voice chat of any video game except this one time in a Black Ops 1 Zombies lobby late at night where me and some random got pretty philosophical about the idea of snorting Kool-Aid powder. Aside front that one shining gem of an interaction, the best I’ve ever seen from VC is the occasional custom game invite or friend req, which we then never played together again, and even that was few and far between. Mostly my VC experience has been grating noise, or when I’m lucky, people having unrelated convos about irl stuff with the irl buddies in their party. So now, whenever I start a new multiplayer game and it has vc enabled by default, I always turn it off. The few times I have had to use it for objective games and so on where people are actually talking and have to coordinate, it’s always been dry and awkward. And of course, as the video mentioned, people online can’t fucking behave to save their lives. While I’m sure the comments of this video will be full of gamer hardasses bemoaning how folks who don’t want to be belittled and treated with prejudice for just trying to have fun like everyone else are sensitive crybabies and should turn it off, I honestly don’t care. It’s not like douchey, unkind behavior is even remotely uncommon on the internet, so if the devs thought removing it entirely was the way to go, more power to them. It’s a feature I never got much use out of and won’t mourn.

People are going to downplay this issue, but I'm honestly super glad proximity chat is gone. Guys don't experience even half the toxicity we do in games. I remember playing halo online when I was a little girl and even then when I was 11/12 I got rape threats for not being the best or not letting someone have a rocket launcher or sniper or whatever. Even now with so many of these features being removed from games I still get messages with threats of all kinds or people telling me "go back to the kitchen" like they're 14 year olds in 2009. Once in ESO I even had someone track down my fucking address after I simply asked them to stop spewing sexist and racist nonsense. This isn't just like a thing only a few people do either, most of the other women I know who play games also don't use mics or use a voice changer because it's like an every other match thing. It's ridiculous immature behaviour and until it stops (like never let's get real) things like proximity chat need to stay gone or be opt in and off by default.

While I personally don’t care to interact with many other gamers as a result of this, I still believe proximity chat should be optional for those who want to use it. Allow the Players to self Police from inside each game themselves instead of hoping the server or 343 does something that they have proven they never will do. It worked in CE, why not here ?

I'm confused on how proximity mic is more abusable than open mic. Is it literally just a slower time frame to get automuted cause of reports? (from less people hearing insane bs at a time)

YES. 343i shouldn't treat us like children. Disable the offenders, NOT the whole community. Proximity chat should have a shut off by each player.

Sea of Thieves has proximity chat and it's fine. You can just mute and turn off chat if it gets bad. Microsoft has proximity chat in at least one of their games.

It would be ideal if they tried to make it how CoD’s is. I believe they have a system in place, with AI, that the second someone says something awful (and I mean like AWFUL, racial slurs, etc.) they are immediately chat banned. They still technically can play, but no one can hear them. I think you can still chat with them, but you have to manually unmute them. That would be ideal for Halo.

Put the option to mute proximity chat front and center, not like 343 did in halo infinite where if I want to mute someone on my team I have to enter two menus. That game UI sucks

I think the best option would be when someone starts to play a MP game for the first time (not just Halo, but any online game), be UPFRONT about prox chat, explaining it, and getting the option to opt in/out. Of course , have the option to change it later. And still of course have measures to ban the REALLY toxic shit.

That era of game chat went beyond just mean words. People need to stop acting like they don't remember how crazy it was. It was very common to hear rape threats and racial slurs. Don't get me started about if they heard woman in the chat. This is on top of most players not even using it. The developers most likely saw that it wasn't even popular enough to risk the embarrassment of people posting clips of the vulgarity and some news outlet running with it. Even now in Infinite, it seems like the only people with mics on are the assholes. Maybe if Halo ever gets back to those heights they can consider adding more voice chat features again, but considering Infinite didn't even launch with a Slayer playlist, they have way more important things to figure out within 343 (and xbox) 1st.

There's still quite a few competitive games that have proximity chat though, that have much more toxic fanbases. Also in just lobby/team chat, I'm sorry to say, slurs, racism, and sexism ran rampant anyway. Proximity chat didn't change that at all. It just made more people do it. Removing proximity chat just seems like a non-answer to the problem. The lobby system being removed is its own issue, but still. I know my GF still gets messages from toxic players, and that sucks. But we both know it is a human issue.

On one hand, I get it- I've been harassed irl, it sucks when you get on a game to relax and get harassed there too. *That being said*, I think it should be an option in the menu that's off by default unless you turn it on. If it worked in Halo 3 it could work in Infinite

Bring it back, don’t use a mic if you’re worried about trash talk / abuse. 95% of people don’t care. Proximity chat and pre and post game lobby chat are great.

the reason why proximity chat is good in lethal company is because 90% of the time, your playing with your friends. and the other 10% of the time, your alone. and away from your friends. in a multiplayer game it sucks like halo.

Having it as some sort of option would be the best move, but I doubt they'll do it. It could just be a toggle in the settings and then that would be it. I can't stand people who take a game too seriously, can't stop cussing or using racial slurs. There are some amazingly immature people out there, but you can't laugh and smile like you once did without having some sort of chat on. Sadly, I'll go multiple rounds and no one will even say a word anymore. The good days of hilarious lobbies and fun trash talk are gone. It's a tough pill to swallow for everyone.

Def not knocking you for making this video but I’ve always believed that this was common knowledge. I was around for the Halo 2 and Modern Warfare lobbies, I’ve lived through this cultural shift to being way more nurturing of peoples’ feelings, so I’m not at all surprised that large corporations would be afraid of someone getting their feelings hurt. More importantly devastating for them would be the following PR nightmare blaming their game and their platform for hate speech and fostering an unsafe environment. I miss the violent shitstorm of unfiltered proximity/ lobby chat but I guess it’s a thing of the past now
