Why governments should prioritize well-being | Nicola Sturgeon

In 2018, Scotland, Iceland and New Zealand established the network of Wellbeing Economy Governments to challenge the acceptance of GDP as the ultimate measure of a country's success. In this visionary talk, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon explains the far-reaching implications of a "well-being economy" -- which places factors like equal pay, childcare, mental health and access to green space at its heart -- and shows how this new focus could help build resolve to confront global challenges.

Sadly, our politicians have supplanted our preachers. Our politics has usurped our religions. Our capital buildings have appropriated our churches. History is replete with evidence of why we should have little faith in government. We should know to be cautious of whom we follow. Matthew warned us 2,000 years ago “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." Perhaps we were smarter then than now.

The prosperity of Wales is rooted in coal and those who mined it. The filthy, dangerous, and back-breaking extraction of energy from the earth provided the basic needs of Welsh society. THAT is at its root. Not one country in the world achieved prosperity due to having the mental and physical well-being of its citizens at its root. None ever will. We need to recognize we are climbing Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Each new level can only be achieved with the previous level firmly in place.

On the other hand absolute capatalism is a disaster because it will drive higher inequality. What FM Sturgeon advocates is unassailable goodness. I have no quarrel with her aspirational goals. The critical question is: How to achieve this? As she spoke, I couldn't help but feel that politicians today have displaced the preachers of yesteryear. Politics today has displaced the religious faiths of yesterday. That is dangerous. Governments can't lead us to this. Government needs to provide the necessary infrastructure of course but, unless that infrastructure (type; timing) is driven by free enterprise, we will quickly have the worst of all worlds - severe poverty. The realities measured by the GDP are absolutely fundamental to achieving the ideals we all share. We take our eye off that ball to our own peril.

GDP is useful to determine the overall economic well being of a country, but I agree that it shouldn't be the single thing we look at as a whole. This talk though, it's not offering any hard definitions of what a national view of "well being" looks like or prescriptive measures to reach them. It's a lot of platitudes which are based in reality but not entirely useful either. You can't just say the goal of the government is to make people happy or concentrate on their populations well being and then not have an actual measure of well being outlined. The definition is that it's a general positive state among a group or an individual. How are we to define that or measure that. We can't survey people and ask them because they will always measure their feelings of well being in reference to others. The issue is politics messes it all up.

So is the conversation to be had with reguards to the government, its governance, politics as it is in [insert country], the individual, or the whole of [insert group]s society? And depending on which we are talking about... what precisely is the purpose of their very being? As a person im not overly interested in the majority of those groups meddling in my personal wellbeing. Perhaps im unusual but i dont need or want someone forcing decisions upon me. Im not even a third of the way in and already im getting the vibes of an argument built around idealism... purpose be damned, consequences be damned, foundations and lives be damned... as i continue to listen i hope i hear reason and at least some pause to consider the potential consequences of change.

  • @FacelessForever

seems a little too much is omitted for the convenience of the narrative..and perhaps too little of the why is considered with regards to economics, currency, human life, happiness, labor, and the Wealth of Nations. most of the issues fix themselves through the very existence of the market, the presence of laws, and the founding of democracy. if the SIN countries governing bodies are truly focused solely on gdp then im sorry to say but you're "governmenting" wrong. it is not that the gdp is the be all and end all that must be focused on absolutely. it is that through observation the gdp is a very simple statistic that effectively(not perfectly) measures the overall quality of life for a couple hundred million people... every drastic change poses problems to the original norm. but people also change and adapt. with new changes come new advantages that some are more capable of capitalizing on.

BaresarkSlayne The Scottish Government have produced a National Performance Framework- which is mentioned here but not explained fully. It is a very thorough and broad-ranging framework which defines a host of national indicators that the Scottish Government (and others if they are inclined) can measure and monitor, as well as focus on through specific projects, policies and funding. The framework is based on the UN’s Sustainable Development goals but puts these goals and ideas into a specifically Scottish context, as well as being more detailed in terms of what the overall goals actually mean in terms of tangible or measurable changes on a local or national level. The definitions exist (and include a whole range of things from education levels and income to measures of physical environment including low pollution and green space access)- they just haven’t been discussed here in any detail as I think the point was to argue that wellbeing is important and it CAN be a Governments’ focus, rather than explaining how to go about it specifically.

As an American, I first one to say that I respect the tenacity in your speech. However, what I do think we need to not just half as a passing thought is the fact that automation is on the rise. The capitalistic grid locking in America will prevent this from ever being reality, but I do think that a forbiddance of mass-replacement of human beings by robotics in the workforce is something that should be seen as humanitarian crisis and handled accordingly. Outlawing companies from overturning their labor to machines and heavily regulating what can and cannot be regulated should be seen as a priority
