Douglas Beal: An alternative to GDP that focuses on wellbeing, not just wealth

Most economists agree that GDP, the most widely used measure of a country’s success and growth, is a poor indicator of the overall wellbeing of a nation. Doug Beal created an alternative index that measures not just wealth but wellbeing. The new gauge takes into account such factors as income equality, sustainability and education. Beal shares insights on the development of the index and reveals how it offers a new perspective on which countries are the real winners and losers in the global economy.

This is stupid. You can't graph wellbeing based on arbitrary measures because different people have different views on what wellbeing even means. Of course arab countries are 'falling back' in this system because their values are very different from western societies values. How do you even decide which factors are more relevant for peoples wellbeing when that is a subjective matter that differs from citizen to citizen, and from country to country? Wont this system tend to favor left wing countries over right? This whole thing seems way too convoluted to be useful.

If it does favor the left wing is because the free market theory does not go that well in practice, for any government should aim its people wellbeing.. Also, it might favor the left wing, just like GDP happens to favor right wingers. Values aside, good health, peace, equality and environmental health should be favored over the amount of financial transactions in any health society.

I know your comment is 5 years old but I want to reply nonetheless. I see your point, but I think there is a lowest common denominator when it comes to the definition of wellbeing. And I think our values which developed from the enlightment are not just a western fad. We are talking about universal human rights. And I'm afraid these are not respected by islamic governments at all.
