Vikram Bhalla: Family businesses are here to stay, and thrive

What do Wal-Mart, Mars, and Newscorp have in common? They’re family businesses. Vikram Bhalla analyzes the unique strengths and weaknesses of family businesses today, contrasting it with the humble mom-and-pop store the term usually brings to mind. Vikram’s research has revealed that family businesses in emerging economies are the fastest-growing, most ambitious breed of companies in the world. He extrapolates some valuable lessons that these successful ventures can share for both family and traditional companies.
TED@BCG was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the BCG community. Jointly produced by TED and BCG, the event put a spotlight on ideas, projects and insights that will contribute to the pursuit of growing ever onward and upward.

Couldn't agree more. My experience of looking at South Asia from Europe over the last 5 Years gives me similar views. Vikram, what next. There are many other Prakash's who have made their decisions not to stay . what next for them. Excellent subject and well addressed Vikram. Congrats

+Suman Lata Not really - he mentions there are areas where 'corporate discipline' is needed - those are areas where professional managers and consultants can add value. Apart from that, even though he argues for the entrepreneur's well-honed intuition and experience driving strategic decisions, professional advice can still help in revealing and analyzing strategic options
