Why God Reveals Himself to Some & Not Others | Tara - NJ | Atheist Experience 21.40

The Atheist Experience episode 21.40 for October 15, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and Don Baker.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblogs.com/axp/
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

John 14: 21 He who has My (Jesus) commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me. John 21: 20 Peter, turning around, *saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!” 23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that *would be written. Where can one start reading the Bible? John (4th Scripture of the New Testament) and/or Acts of the Apostles (5th Scripture of the New Testament)

Why would it be impossible for people to be dogmatic about this? Anyone who blindly believes this, without justification, and yet defends it against all scrutiny, would be dogmatic about it. The vast majority of atheists I debate are EXTREMELY dogmatic about Materialism. And they can't give any rational justification for why they affirm Materialism over any other metaphysical theory. They can only give fallacies, along with pseudoskepticism about competing metaphysical theories. Same with Empiricism - the belief that truth can ONLY be known if it's empirically verified. The majority of atheists I debate are very dogmatic about this, as well. They presuppose it to be the true Epistemology, without a rational justification for why it's true. And they completely ignore the fact it's easily demonstrated to be necessarily false with one sentence: The philosophical claim "Truth can only be known if it's empirically verified" cannot be empirically verified ITSELF. @@johnsperry9494 Definition of doctrine: a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group Why would the positions I listed not qualify? It is possible to be dogmatic about any philosophical position or ideology. Heck, virtually every atheist I debate is EXTREMELY dogmatic about Materialism, Empiricism, etc. Empiricism, for example, is the philosophical position that truth can ONLY be known if it's empirically verified. The majority of atheists I debate believe this is true, without any rational justification for how they determined it's true. I'll show you: *The philosophical claim that "Truth can only be known if it's empirically verified" cannot be empirically verified itself* There. That demonstrates it's self-refuting. And all self-refuting claims are false by necessity. Yet, the majority of atheists just IGNORE this completely and continue presupposing Empiricism is true without even having a rational justification for why it's true to begin with. And while ignoring the refutation. And they also engage in irrational pseudoskepticism to dismiss any demonstration that a competing Epistemology is actually true in place of Empiricism. It's not really possible to be more dogmatic than that. And I could do the same for all the other positions I listed. All of them.

@@gianthills wow, ok. If that's how you want to be, that's fine. It sounds like you are more interested in thinking you won arguments than knowing what is true. That's up to you. And it's fine. I am not trying to change your mind or even educate you on this. But since you started the exchange, the least I can do is tell you the score. And no, you didn't debunk squat. But that's fine, you're going to believe what you want anyway. So here it goes. First of all, the "life comes from nothing" trope that the apologists like to trot out is a strawman. Find an atheist, or an agnostic, or really anyone, who even claims that, and discuss it with them. I don't believe that. It's not part of my worldview. It's not something that is inherently atheistic, or agnostic, or anything. It is simply a strawman argument that has no basis in reality. It's the most ignorant attempt of a "gotcha" that apologists seem to have. And it doesn't work. On that basis alone, I don't need to explain it at all, as I don't hold that position. My position regarding where life comes from is simply, "I don't know." Which is the only honest answer. You don't know either. You might claim to know, but you don't. And I know that for a fact because you don't have evidence to support the position of you knowing. You can try, and I'd love to hear it. But I am quite certain you don't. I certainly don't believe you do, anyway, so feel free to tackle that in your spare time. Now, it seems to me that if you are a theist (and I am assuming you are by this conversation), you are likely to believe that god created life. Ok, that's fine. I don't believe that, and until you demonstrate and provide sufficient evidence for your god's existence, I'm not going to believe your claim. So you are the one with the burden of proof and the heavy lifting that ensues. Feel free to provide that. I would also add that if you do end up providing suitable evidence for the existence of your god, and the suitable evidence that your god actually created something, then that begs a couple of questions. First, what did god create life (or everything if you want to go there) out of? Was it nothing? If it was nothing, then it seems you, and not me, are making the claim that life came from nothing. If you are able to answer that sufficiently, then of course we really need to ask what god came from. Was it nothing, or was it something? If it was nothing, then we're back to you believing something came from nothing. If it was something, then what was it? And now you have the infinite regress problem, don't you? And once you get there, you realize the entire notion is just ridiculous. It's not comprehensible with what we know, and it's rather irrelevant anyway. "I don't know" becomes the most honest answer. I said it was irrelevant because why do I care where life came from? I have a short amount of time to live, and so do you. I am more concerned with living the best life I can right now, and not worry about post-life or life unseen. I am not a scientist, so how life came to be is not important to me. It's not part of my world view, it does not impact me in the slightest. And I am certainly not going to insert an indemonstrable god into the gap of my understanding because I am uncomfortable with not knowing something. Maybe you are insecure or arrogant enough to do that, but I'm not. I am humble enough to admit that I don't know something. Also notice that I didn't get into the definition of "nothing". That's an important point too. When you say "nothing", what does that really mean? I actually don't care, because I find the crossroad of scientific nothing and philosophical nothing to be an inane and banal discussion. Argue that with someone who cares. Also notice that I kept the god as a lower case, and a non-specific god. I am virtually certain that you believe in a very specific god being the one that created life, and stuff, however he did that. If you can't demonstrate any god exists, which I doubt you can't, then trying to demonstrate a specific god's existence is not going to happen. So, make sure when you reply you keep that in mind, because I'm not interested in the specific god you believe in. Demonstrate any god's existence first. Anyway, I've gone way beyond your initial statement, which was a dumb statement in the first place. I suggest you stop using that lame, debunked, waste of time weak-ass argument and come up with something better if you are going to be taken seriously. Thanks for reading.

@@smequals The position "I don't know", isn't actually a position, nor is it actually true about atheists. It's a way to avoid debate while forcing theists to provide proof. It's a game I see over and over. You're position can't simply be arbitrary while demanding that others provide proof . Atheists do have a position yet pretend not to have one because defending it is a non starter. I'll explain further. You and others want proof of God that they deem acceptable, a level of evidence that meets their subjective standards. Fine. Yet, here's where we discover that they are intellectually dishonest. If, by their own admission, they would believe in a creator if presented with sufficient evidence, this tells us that they themselves have an idea of what kind of evidence would qualify, right? Yet, atheists refuse to answer that question. If they do not even know what evidence would qualify as proof, they cannot claim that no proof exists because they wouldn't recognize it even if it did exist. Its a circular nightmare that atheists have been conditioned to accept as logic. The idea of something from nothing isn't a gatcha at at all. God having created everything isn't something from nothing, here's why. If God is the energy source of all life, life then came from that source, not nothing. However, without that creative source of energy, you do have nothing, yet you think that life can just appear without that primary source of creation. Simply calling God "nothing", is a word game, not based in logic.

Both will help you come to realize that religion is a bunch of man made bulls**t and the world is an amazing place with no need to invent supernatural crap. It is gonna be hard if you have been indoctrinated but you can do it! The internet can help show the dishonesty that religious people have. I asked my Dad if animals can really talk, and he told me that it was make-believe (which I later labeled Suspended disbelief). I put those books on my make-believe shelf, along with Mickey Mouse, Peter Rabbit, and Winnie the Pooh. One day my well-meaning but deluded Presbyterian grandmother gave me a book of Bible stories for children. In the very first story, I found a talking snake. I was brought up in a christian household. When I was a kid, like between the age of 4 and 9 I didn't think anything of it. I enjoyed going to church, all the playgroups, some festivities etc. But I always remember, during times the pastor would preach, tell fables or read from the bible, it just never stuck. I never felt anything, in fact I used to just want to go to sleep. It was boring, then as I got older between 9 and 12 it really started to grate on me. Remember I was brought up at that point by a devout christian, the kind where he would beat the living shit out of you if you said jesus christ in anger or shock. I just didn't get it. Thankfully my mum left him and it all fizzled out. Anyway, after my grandmother died when I was around 23. I remember sitting in her house with my old man, uncle and cousin and the inevitable discussion arose. I shared my experience of how it must never connected with me, I never understood it, I never felt it. It all seemed ridiculous. I said I felt I had agency for my own actions and only I can make a difference in my life god has never revealed himself to me, if god made me, and knows me why would he not give me that courtesy and save me from hell? I was given a promise. "Come to the prayer meeting this Friday, I can promise you, jesus will reveal himself" I went. Can you guess what happened? Absolutely fuck all. I felt nothing and was acutely aware of standing in a room full of roasters, proclaiming that walking to the pastor for him to pray for me would heal my problems. That was the last time I saw that side of my family and that was around 14 years ago. It never sat right with me that god allegedly revealed himself to these people but left me out in the cold. Then i realised that these people want it to be true so much they probably confuse their own monologue or reality with god. They make it happen. That's some bull shit right there.

@Melanin Warrior So you suggest identifying as trans is like religion? Well that is a strawman argument for a start. If you have to call something a religion when it is not, just makes it seem you have no real arguments. Take homeopathy, it is silly nonsense but to call it religion would be a strawman. As for your DNA argument, I suggest you look up something called Swyer syndrome. And after you have done that, tell me if you consider someone with Swyer syndrome a man or a woman.

Well, not every mind. With the realization that the faithful can be convinced of the most unrealistic of concepts only strengthens my resolve to yoke the labor of the religious!! Normal people should never have to clean toilets or be garbage men, so long as there are the Faithful, that can be instructed- thou shall collect garbage from sun-up till sundown on the Sabbath, it is gods will, it is written, therefore it shall be.... When any old janitor cleans a toilet, it might be done to satisfaction; when a believer, who believes that cleaning toilets earns them their seat at the right hand of the father, you better believe that they’d clean that commode like they expect jesus himself to take a dump in it! We wouldn’t even have to pay them; but we would still require 10%- god need$ your paper money

Funny isn’t it? This all powerful, all loving God could literally come down at any moment and show everyone the correct interpretation of his holy book if he cared about ppl knowing the truth. Yet you have soooooo many disagreeing Christians on what is the correct interpretation and logically, they all can’t be right. God could fix this if he exists.

A lot of atheist would also not praise God if he did come down and set all this straight (which he really should since none of his followers seem to be able to agree). Quite frankly the guy seems like an asshole to me and he has some serious questions to answer before I would even consider “following” him.

@LuthAMF You didn't even ask a question other than the guy comment😂. You asked if the guy referred to god, which yes since he's depicted as a guy (he is in the Catholic church at least, which is what I'm referring to). If you don't want to use the Catholic church as the basis of what gods gender is then, I'll gladly call god they when talking to religious people. Still, I think a lot of people would have issues with that since they're the same ones who get upset about actual people (you know people on Earth who actually can speak to everyone and express what their gender is) using they/them pronouns. If that's your simple question, I think you have other issues. Also, I question if you understand how sentences work since you added enough question marks that I wonder if the key got stuck. Then you say my explanation is bad because you decided it is, and that's it. Nothing else said. In most productive conversations, you'd give a reason why an explanation is bad. Since you didn't, I assume you don't understand how a productive conversation works. When my friend does something I don't agree with, I don't tell them bad and nothing else. You'd have 0 friends if you did that because more is needed in the conversation, or you come across as an asshole. It seems to me like you don't like hearing people say bad things about your religion and can't give reasons why they're wrong. Then your last comment I assume is supposed to be condescending, but it's just rephrasing my words. Okay? Wow really got me there (this is sarcasm, and I'm putting this in since I'm not confident you would get that and think I'm actually serious). Personally, I'm still chuckling that when I see your username, I keep thinking it's a nickname for Lucifer. I mean, it sounds badass, and I think if the Lucifer show hasn't already given him a nickname, I just found him one.

You see, you have won the lottery and don't need these things, so you can give them away" Mike "The lottery? Really.. how do you know? I don't even know you. I should go home and check my ticket" Bill "I just know. I have faith.. So, please give away your stuff" Mike "Eh? Faith? I'm not giving you my things because you say so.." Bill "But I have evidence.. You see those advertisement boards up there for cola. It's my interpretation from reading them that you have won the lottery." Mike "What are you talking about? That's not evidence!" Bill "Of course it is! There are thousands of advertisement boards up and down the country!" Mike "But that doesn't say I've won the lottery.. It talks about vacuum cleaners. Cars. Cola..." Bill "Exactly! Don't you see? It's a sign.. have faith!" Mike "I don't see that.. It's not evidence at all." Bill "Well what is it then!? Thousands of people have seen these signs and they're real dammit.. It's my interpretation.." Mike "Goodbye.."
