I've been breeding gbr's for nearly 30 years and have perfected rearing them. By far the biggest reason for failure is people feeding baby brine shrimp as first food. Two reasons for this... Firstly bbs are simply to big for first food for most Ram fry... Secondly, and in conjunction with point one, the bbs don't live long in freshwater so will perish fast if uneaten and as most new free swimming gbr's struggle to eat bbs, there's more shrimp to die in the fresh water. The water quality then declines rapidly and gbr are very delicate. My way is simple... I remove at egg stage if parents are persistent eggs eaters, but if possible I prefer to siphon out at wrigglers stage. Fry are put in 2 gallon tank with mature sponge filtration and water from parents tank... also added is a few Indian almond leafs and a few pond snails and java moss. By far best food for first few days of free swimming is vinegar eels. They are easy and clean to cultivate, and importantly live for ages in freshwater almost ensuring they survive long enough for fry to find and eat them. After about 3 days of free swimming and being fed vinegar eels, try bbs and if all fry have immediate pink bellys then switch to bbs for main food. This is my best tip though... I use the twin stick on glass sponge filters which I've maturing in parents tanks once I spot courtship behaviour. I do 50 percent water changes initially every other day using new water from parents tank, and I siphon baby's tanks by putting airline down the uplift of the sponge filter! As longe as sponges are in place and uplift is above water surface, it's impossible to suck up any fry! I refill with gravity the same way. I let snails take care of waste and don't clean tank bottom at all for first few weeks. Done right, gbr fry grow v fast and within a few weeks siphoning tank bottom with airline should be possible without accidently sucking up and fry. Hope this helps some of you in breeding and rearing this brilliant little fish. Here's a little vid of one of my batches of fry feeding at 2 days old on vinegar eels...There's a great shot of a fry taking an eel around the 47 seconds mark. kzread.info/dash/bejne/launm8iyYLaWdZc.html

I too use vinegar eels and my first brood of rams are going to be 3 weeks old tomorrow and are getting big fast. The second brood did not hatch and I now, my third brood are wigglers. Hopefully, they grow as good as the first brood. Just so amazing to watch considering just how small they are.

Denise F yes! I’ve down a few water change videos (how to). Removing the food is hard to film but I like the suggestion. Will do my best to do one soon

What temperature is the water when you're growing out the wrigglers? I lost a batch of them trying to grow them in a breeder box. They were small enough to fit through the gaps where the mom ate them all.

Do you use RO Water with your rams? How do you keep your water or do you just use tap water?

I have probably 1000+ fry from EBR, GBR, GBR X EBR and bolivian ram fry along with super red apisto fry. They are so small its hard to feed them baby brine shrimp. Powder has been working very well but it is super expensive. Right now im watching a 2nd pair of EBR about to spawn and a younger pair of GBR that look like they want to but don't know how to. I have 2 pairs EBR 3 pairs GBR 2 pairs bolivian 1 pair GBR male EBR female 1 pair GBR MALE gold female 2 pairs super red apisto. All except the younger pairs and apisto's are spawning roughly every 10 days except the gbr/gold pair and the younger gbr pair. I will cool the water to about 76° to give them a break for a couple months. I don't want to over work their bodies. I pull the eggs everytime and use meth blue. My biggest problem now isn't feeding the fry, it's growing out all these fry. They'll most likely end up in a 6ft 125G. Water parameters Tds: 50-150ppm Ph: 6.5 Temp: 84°F I try keep the water under 100ppm. In my short experience tds below 100ppm will result in larger spawns and higher survival rates

They breed in my 10 gallon beginner tank. Any tips on how to prevent the couple from breeding? The store only gives me them as couple😑

Hello, this is a very instructive video, thank you for it. How about water oxidation in such a small pot? What are the pH, dGH and temperature values at this stage? I can not believe that it is possible to maintain the quality of the water in such a small container. Can you tell us something about it?

Kamil Dvořáček thank you. Keeping things simple over here! Just change the water frequent and room old food. If the water is clean and not there long enough there’s never a build up. Don’t really over think it. My goal is to breed nice fish and make a stronger strain everybody can keep and enjoy

Yes I can! This is embarrassing but all my water test kits are expired haha. I never test my water unless I have a problem. I have to get some testers and will maybe add that to a video. But pH around 6.8-7.2
