In my city both of the teams follow this example and they gained a lot of money because of it, the stores also sell the tickets for the match with a discount so that they can gain even more

    As much as I love your stuff, I don’t think it’s fair to compare football to things like Disney and apple, just because they’re entirely for-profit. As much as football is being commercialised, it isn’t entirely profit motivated and the fans have far more of a say in what clubs do than Disney or apple customers, just look at the turn around in the Super League and how much more money could be made if football was 100% profit motivated.

    Football has always been a sport for the working class. It was never meant to be a source of revenue, its true purpose was to bring a sense of joy to the the general mass so that they could simply forget all their worries and enjoy the life for what it is even i it is for a moment. Technically, you can simply play the game just by buying a football. Most of the people in Asia and Africa still play with barefoot because these people can't afford to buy boots. That's the beauty of this sport. This is exactly why the street football of Brazil is so so revered around the globe. Football for all its purpose was to bring happiness and in that sense it has done more than one could ever explain period

    The issue is that that would highly differ between the Football Leagues themselves. In Germany you're still able for ... 10 ~ 18 Bucks to see the two best Sides live, from directly behind the Goal. While the Premier League in England has already far higher prices and same goes for the TV Rights. And yes, I see a connections between Ticket Prices and the monetizisation of a Sport.

    @@otto9090 Lol you say that like, Disney and other media corporations aren't 'a little bit about' the entertainment and its quality as well. People go to watch a marvel movie because it's what they want to watch. They're both predominantly about revenue and by extension profit hence why attempting to nominalise the media industry in favour of bigging up the sports industry is a fallacy.

  • @otto9090

    @otto9090

    @@himum3429 but football is way different. It's not fully a business. It's a sport, people play it themselves, it's a real passion. But I don't think there are many having a real passion watching films. And Disney is making 134 Star wars movies because of the money no one gets the story any more and the best characters just died years ago. They're only making star wars movies because it brings them money. But football isn't played only because of the money. It's just hard to compare it and saying football is way smaller. It is the most popular sport in the world. And clubs are not establishments, or only partly.

  • @himum3429

    @himum3429

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@otto9090 I get that you have a real passion for the game, especially due to your profile pic. I assume your a Real Madrid fan, I'm a Liverpool fan and they're the two greatest clubs in their respective countries hence why our passion tends for football tends to be even higher (I'm sure fans of Bayern, Barca, The two Milan teams and United back in the day can/could relate). Given that, you can't seriously be saying people don't have the same kind of Passion when in terms of the film industry. A lot of people who aren't really into sports go to the cinema on the regular and while COVID defo impacted that, it also did the same to football with the 'zero crowds' thingy. There are film critics, film reviewers and film journalists much in the same way there are sports commentators, sports pundits and sports journalists. There are entire sub cultures under these that eclipse many of their contemporaries. For example Football is more popular than Basketball, Tennis, Formula 1, UFC, Cricket, Athletics etc. While Marvel is more popular than Star wars, DC, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Venomverse, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Harry potter etc. They are both inherently built to make money as they are both inherently industries. Sports (in this case football) at its base is made so that fans only have to pay for a match ticket and snacks and can enjoy the games they love. Movies at their base are made so that fans only have to pay for a movie ticket and popcorn and can enjoy the movies they love. Movies aren't just made for the money either lol. Just like their are smaller football clubs who are more likely to listen to their fans they're also smaller indie Studios and films that are more likely to think of money as a secondary to entertainment. Likewise there are the big boys of the industries (Marvel/Harry potter) or (Real Madrid/Liverpool) who already have MASSIVE global fanbases and are more eligible to make high profile mistakes and greedy monetary decisions like locking content behind a subscription service or creating a bloody Super League yet still get away with it. These two industries are quite frankly some of the oldest in the world. Movies have their base in the early 1900's while Shakespearean style theater dates back to the mid to late 1500s. Ancient Greek theatre goes back to about 900 B.C with exaggerated storytelling perhaps as old as Mesopotamia. Sports likewise are also extremely old, football is believed to have been invented by the British in the late 1700s with earlier roots in Han dynasty China. Sports as a whole date back to Ancient Rome with the Gladiator Games Ancient Greece with the OG Olympics and Boxing supposedly goes all the way back to VERY Ancient Egypt. The point I'm trying to make is that while they've both become predominantly commercial over the many, many years since their inception, they are still at their core about pleasing us, the fans. These actors and the sportspeople are sometimes gifted (like Messi or Leonardo DiCaprio, Sometimes they work their socks off to achieve their level (Denzel Washington, Cr7) but they all have a genuine love for their art and that can be seen in their performances. It's not about comparing tbh. I think it's just moreso about being happy that unlike other industries like technology and fast food they haven't gone full on corporate yet.

    I believe for global football brands, it still looks better to have jerseys designed and selled by the giants Nike, Adidas and Puma, but for smaller clubs, it seems better to take over the creation and production of the kits. Some brazilian clubs took over this process and they are gaining in quantity, design and a much bigger slice in sails. Also the fans are buying more, because they know it will help the club.

    When adding up the revenue for football, how did you calculate it? Did you take into account the revenues of all clubs, all leagues, all national teams, and events (world cup, etc.)? Because 33 billion seems quite low when you consider that top clubs like Bayern have around 600-700 million EUR revenue per year alone. Also, from which year is the data? Obviously the revenues have been a lot lower since the pandemic. Regarding tech, it is of course a lot "easier" to create a product that potentially almost everyone could want or need compared to overpriced sporting merch that is usually only bought to support your favored team.

    i usually love the content of this channel, but i think the comparison against tech companies wasnt the best to determine how big is futbol , or at least not the main comparative.... maybe having a more in depth analisys against other sports in terms of reach, revenue and income per "fan" but also in terms of players averga salary vs "stars", etc.... i dont know if you have already but will be interesting to compare it whit NBA, MLB and Tennis that was briefly mentioned at the begining....

    That's already been done and you can look it up. This video sees football as an entertainment business and compares it with Disney primarily. The Apple thing was just a brief mention to compare scales and and they said it themselves in the video that comparing sport to tech makes no sense because of the innovation advantage tech has.

    American sports market is inflated. Even some MLS team worth more than top European teams. Probably because many Americans support teams based on winning rather than local affiliation. Dallas has huge fanbase all over the country, so merch sales are high. Also Its a closed league, revenues are steady, no fear of relegation. If you are bottom teams, you can get higher draft pick and take top athlete to create buzz. Salary cap make sure all teams have a set spending budget, so no surprise financial decision (compare to football).

    Actually, the term "Soccer" for Football did really originate in England before Football was even a thing internationally. I think, the Oxford or Cambridge Univeristy "Football" Club called it Soccer - Because "Football" refered to something more like Rugby. Which is btw also the reason why "American Football" (=Eggball) is called Football there, because Eggball actually originated from a similar Sport in England - What is nowadays called Rugby. Yet, in most Languages Soccer/Football is translated with something similar to "Foot" + "Ball", while Eggball isn't even really played with the Foot which makes it nonsensical to even call it Football. It doesn't even really have a "Ball" in it - I mean, that weird thing is weirdly shaped and if you ask people how they would describe a Ball, they wouldn't describe an Eggball, would they?

    @@DaroriDerEinzige correct "The word soccer comes from an abbreviation for Association (from Association Football, the 'official' name for the game) plus the addition of the suffix -er. This suffix (originally Rugby School slang, and then adopted by Oxford University), was appended to 'shortened' nouns, in order to form jocular words." Rugby: "mid 19th century: named after Rugby School (see Rugby), where the game was first played"

    Best thing to do is to create a dedicated streaming service for each league, and divide the shares/profits generated amongst the teams the way the broadcasting rights are divided right now. That way the teams have increased revenue and there's a singular service required. They can even make it into a twitch like service, with each team having their own "channel" with additional content like interviews or team bloopers available to subscribers and even more for paying members like KZread. They can even have something like a superchat to raise money for charity. Best way to maximise rewards, and allows teams to have a fair chance to increase revenue and greater fan interactions.

    Is it necessary for football to continue to increase it's revenue so fast and think "wow each fan only spend $10 per year vs £28 for FB" Whilst I appreciate the insight and presentation of this channel. The tone of this video and the continued capitalist/profit maximisation lens put on football worries me. Football clubs need to viable businesses of course, but all this is leading to is the continued extraction of money from the masses to give to the top. In the same way Disney parks are no longer affordable for the masses. Football will go even further in the same direction in the next 10 years with ever higher ticket prices, merchandise and TV subscriptions. When does it end? The average PL player earned £13k a week in 2000, this is now £60k. +462%. Average UK salaries have gone up +66% in the same time, And it's those people who pay their salaries through the increase in match tickets, merchandise, TV packages and buying products of their commercial partners. We can't continue to allow everything o be put through the lens of companies with billions of dollars in revenue needing to grow more and more each year when the people who supply a majority of their income, get less and less in relation.

    @@robert2690 no, I'm saying that inequality is getting out of hand and has accelerated at a ridiculous pace since the 80's.. Footballers should earn a lot of money no doubt and football clubs can earn millions in revenue. But continuing to focus on maximising revenue in this way led to the super league and nothing suggests they won't try it again in the future if we don't challenge this way of thinking.
