Why everyone should know sumi gaeshi. Subtlety from the world champion in sambo \ sambo academy

Why everyone should know sumi gaeshi. Subtlety from the world champion in sambo Ivan Vasilchuk. Throw over the head is my favorite and often used throw. It helped me numerous times in my sambo career.

After thousands of reps I can do it in any condition and any situation. I decided to share my main secrets of this throw in the video. Any sambo or judo Academy have their specialty. In our Neteshin gym it's over the head throw.

Sambo is a versatile sport because it has large amount of techniques in standing position as well as on the ground. Why can't you throw an opponent who's equal or stronger opponent? There are two main reasons. First - you're setting up and doing the throw wrong, and the second you're predictable and everyone knows your moves. In both cases your technique is flawed and something has to be changed. All progressive MMA fighters are incorporating sambo submissions. It's easily explainable due to limited time on the ground ( 2-5 seconds to catch and another minute to complete ). Sambists research the fastest and most effective ways to finish for years. Why does everyone want to finish fast? It's an opportunity to finish in style and preserve your energy. I know the taste of quick finishes like no other. 25 years in sambo, 13 World Championships in which i earned 2 golds, 4 silvers, 1 bronze and most importantly 90% of my victories happened before regulation time expired. I spent 20000 hours

The lateral rotation that you show at 3:00 really helped me improve my sumi gaeshi. "Like we're dancing." Before, I wasn't moving my feet around to confuse them and set up the throw, I wasn't using my hands to control tightly (my elbow was not closed tightly enough), and I wasn't using my hands to get a lot of spinning before sitting in for the throw. Now after a several months of practice, my sumi gaeshi is much better, thanks to your instruction!

I’m so lucky my local club is both Judo and Sambo, sumi gaeshi is a fantastic technique that sets up submissions really well. You can set up the throw by starting uchi mata, defense is usually to step back which then is perfect off balance to drop on your arse for the overhead throw/ sumi gaeshi. This video shows the technique perfectly thank you 🙏🏻

This is my number one throw in BJJ. The bent of passive straight legged posture is so common especially in ultra heavy and this is kryptonite to them. Even if you end up finishing with yoko sumi gaeshi to the side. There's even a back take there if they try to defend the throw by turning towards your hook

If possible I tend to go for hikikomi-gaeshi instead. Then it's definitely one of my main throws, probably the number one. Extraordinarily efficient against a defensive bent-over stance, which is very common in BJJ/MMA. Against a judoka I would have less opportunities and would mostly use it as a counter.

I fully agree. Used to be one of my favourites. However I prefer Gantschuk's(?) version where you roll straight over and land in the mount. And I also found this to be a perfect counter throw to Morote Gari(double leg). It surprises me that not many point this out and why it is so seldom seen in MMA. As we all know, leg attcks are banned by the IJF these days, which is silly IMO. Suppose it's still legal in Sambo. Thanks.

Although difficult without the Gi, I hit a variation of this from Russian 2 on 1. Usually my 3 or 4 technique in chain sequence if they resist. 1. Shuck forward to the ground and take back. 2.shuck backwards and do outside leg sweep 3.dip inside with arm for 2 on 1 fireman's to knee on belly or armbar/side control 4. Step inside and do a very similar throw to this one where I jam their hand into their solar plexus and arch and throw backwards. Tip: if you can switch to Kimura grip once theyre hand is in their chest your grip with be a lot better with a lot more leverage

Ibrahim Sealy yes, I used to do it when I wrestled. You just do a traditional sumi gaeshi but instead of pulling down on the lapel and grabbing the belt for example, you pull down your opponents head (or head and arm) while in the clinch, then while he is looking down on the Mats and back is facing up you wrap both arms around the waste line, Or a bit above (so your opponent doesn’t hit his head on the mat, while rolling) (anyways the hold will look like sort of a reversed bear hug) it’s basically like a tawara gaeshi, it just has the added benefit of your leg in between the thigh to execute the throw

This is such a good move for Sambo, because you can hold onto the Russian two-on-one grip for a while, and also people tend to stand a bit lower than in Judo. But even in Judo it's a great throw. As Ivan says, sacrifice throws over your head are perfect to use against an opponent who stands low by hinging at their hip. Some people go for yoko tomoe-nage, others go for sumi gaeshi (like the one shown here). Teddy Riner is an excellent example of someone who uses sumi gaeshi to great effect. Usually if he gets his high grip and sleeve, he is able to score on everyone without fail. Most of the time he uses the classic judo combination of uchi mata, ouchi gari, and osoto gari (sometimes harai goshi too). However, sometimes people will bend at their hip and take a low posture. In this case he immediately grabs the belt and shoulder and turns them over, just like Roman Hontyuk did in Athens in 2004. Riner has thrown so many people with sumi gaeshi to punish their low posture.

Honestly I hit a very similar throw from the Russian all the time if we aren't wearing out Gi When I get the Russian I have a chain of techniques I go through 1. If I can I switch from 2 on 1 to an inside Kimura grip and it locks their arm in tight and gives you a lot of leverage to do a very similar throw.
