A small arch definitely puts your shoulders in a better position, I could barely get two reps of 135 with a flat back and I managed 5 with relative ease once I arched even though my range of motion didn't change by more than an inch or so. Between a certain point it's simply what makes your press most effective.

First of all. I think it’s awesome that you’re mixing in a few of these longer and more detailed videos together with the already great shorts. Really solid info! I would love if you could touch on knee valgus or knee cave in the squat. Been lifting for close to 2 years now and for the majority of that time I was always trying to eliminate knee cave completely from my form since it seems most channels on here say that the knees should always track the same direction as the feet as much as possible and that knee cave is less efficient and it means you’ve got weak points to work on. Last 6 months or so I’ve just decided “fuck it” and stopped trying to fix my slight cave. It feels so much better for me to hit depth with knees in line with feet and then let them slightly cave in right as I bounce out. When I reach the sticking point like 10cm up I then push my knees out again in line with the feet. The cave is pretty minor and I feel like I get a lot more power that way from the hole and when I hit the sticking point I can push the knees out and get past it much easier than if I stayed fully open in the hole and didn’t let the knees cave in at all. Something that I can do if I want, but then I’m probably down to a max of 165kg instead of a 180kg that I hit with the slight caving. I see a lot of weightlifters do this. Both when cleaning but also when back squatting. Someone like Lu Xiaojun has a squat similar to how mine looks in the sense of knees caving in and then pushed out. I have a wider stance though and squat mainly low bar. Long comment, but would love to hear if you agree with what I see on KZread that knee valgus is bad, or if it can be beneficial for strength. I have no issues with pain doing it either way. Just weaker with no cave.

He actually did a video on this, knee cave gets a bad rep when all it really is is load management, your hip flexors are moving into a position that is most efficient for moving weight, as long as ur not just slamming ur knees towards eachother ur probably fine

Can you elaborate on the supplemental exercises you use for bench pressing? I currently mix close grip bench, flat bench dumbbell presses and incline dumbbell presses for my two chest days. I think I should add dips, but I'd like to get your perspective.

The people who have that tiny range of motion are always lower weight classes. It’s because all weight classes have the same rules for grip width and the lower weight classes are more likely to have shorter arms. So, imo, the issue is grip width rules, not arch rules

Honestly, I think if they just made it so there's only self lift off, the issue would resolve itself. A lot of those lifters wouldn't be able to use as wide a grip in this instance.

Hey super thanks for the explanation. I was wondering about this for a long time. However, how bad is it, when my glutes don´t touch the bench? I have the feeling all then benches in my gym are too low and I tend to compensate this by lifting my behind a bit too much. Is contact of the rear mandatory or can I continue benching? Many thanks!
