That it utter bullshit. If Germans are indifferent to England, then why does the England games get higher TV ratings in Germany? England vs Germany is more than just sporting rivalry it is a cultural rivalry too. England has more cultural influence than Germany so this irks Germans a bit so there is a slightly envy of England's global cultural influence, so they enjoy beating England because of that. It is like Eurovision Song Contest, Britain has no chance of winning it, because all of Europe envies Britain's international music scene so see it as a poke in the eye for of Britain when they don't give Britain any points.

From the German perspective, I think they would put Holland, Italy and Argentina above England. The problem with England historically when playing Germany after 1966 is that they are too nice and play out classics vs the Germans but are just a hard luck story and end up being the gallant losers. There is no nastiness and pain for the Germans. Compared that to the Dutch and Germans literally spat at each other.

People talk how the English-Germany is mostly stemmed from the war, which to be fair is true, but if you look at the Germany-Netherlands rivalry is mostly the same thing. That rivalry also stems from the war (or at least the war intensified it). But the difference is that the Netherlands was a neutral country at the start of the war and they actually were invaded and conquered by the Germans (despite being neutral and without warning or without provoking the Germans). During the occupation, German soldiers and police forces (as well as Nazi collaborators) committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Dutch. So in a way the Netherlands's rivalry being linked to the war is a bit more justified (or at least more understandable) than the English rivalry is.

  • @mankytoes

That's the thing with rivalries. From an English point of view, it is certainly more important, since the national team has lost to Germany more often in important tournaments. Something similar could be said about Italy from a German point of view. Nevertheless, it is certainly the case that the duels with the Netherlands are considered the most important. Perhaps one or the other Englishman would be surprised to hear that the defeat against England in 2021 did not disappoint many German fans that much, as our team were not given any great chances in this tournament from the outset. Basically, it's nice to see when both teams play at a high level so that the duels take place on an equal footing again. I'm looking forward to the next meeting.

From my perspective as an England fan, it's obviously a one-sided rivalry. On the English side I think it comes down to lamenting why we aren't as remotely successful as they are when, often, our squads are comparable to theirs man-for-man. Germany have won 4 World Cups, 3 Euros, the Confederations Cup - they go deep into almost every tournament they play in and they're one of the most successful footballing nations in history. England have usually been eliminated by the time Germany are at the business-end of the tournament so we haven't actually played each other that many times to have a compelling rivalry - once every 15 years maybe. It's understandable that Germany feel more competitive with national teams who are 'in the same league', which is why they don't take the Netherlands all too seriously anymore, because the Dutch are inconsistent as well, sometimes not even qualifying for tournaments, and they've only ever won the Euros. It's only natural that Germany don't take us seriously and that's why the onus has to be on England to continue to compete more consistently in tournaments as we have been since 2018. Having now beaten them in a competitive game and with English teams going deeper in the Champions League and Europa League - there's no reason to think it couldn't be different in future. Certainly the recent game will leave a bitter taste in the mouth for German fans as their team didn't perform anywhere close to expectations. I think it could trigger another reboot like the one we saw in the 2000s - Toni Kroos has already retired and Muller, Hummels and Gundogan could follow. I think we'll see a different Germany in Qatar.

As Rafa pointed out the premier leagues visibility has definitely improved the awareness about English football. Before you might only have read about it and occasionally seen a match in the cl and moved on with your life. Then there is also the difference in philosophy when it comes to football. One of the things that people on the German side and in the media never seem to account for, and understandably so, are the two world wars. In England, a lot of people still weirdly derive a great deal of pride from imperial Britain (while whitewashing all of the abhorrent things that were carried out on behalf of queen/king and country), and the triumph in WW2 in particular is the cherry on the top of that cake. Add that to these soul-crushing defeats to the germans in football over several years, and that's where I feel the English side of the rivalry stems from. Makes me wonder whether the Germans would feel it more if they weren't so keen to minimise mention of WW2 in any capacity.

Polands rivalry’s with Germany are very similar to Englands with Germany. In Poland it is a national event, due to the 1974 World Cup with the best Poland team being defeated by West Germany in the semi finals. Also at the time, Poland was a communist country, and West Germany was a capitalist country, and with the 1939 German invasion of Poland still fresh in many Poles minds, this further fuelled the rivalry. Add to that the two are right next door to one another. In Germany, Poland aren’t returned the favour. They’re no more seen as a rival than Spain or Denmark.

I feel this is some kind of German roose to claim England is not their rival, like Arsenal and Man Utd fans like to claim Spurs and Man City are not their rival when they clearly are. It is like Germans trying to put England down by saying they are not successful enough to be Germany's rival. Italy, France and Netherlands is a sporting rivalry with Germany. England vs Germany is a rivalry that transcends sport because it is a cultural rivalry. Raphael Honigstein can claim it one sided rivalry, but why those the England vs Germany game get the highest TV ratings in Germany if Germans so see it as big? England has what Germany wants. England has influenced the modern world more than any European country, exporting it's and language culture globally, meaning England has global relevance on every continent and soft power Germany can only dream of. This slightly irks Germans because Germany is the most economically powerful European country, but do not have level of cultural influence of England and this causes slight envy in Germans that other European countries don't have on Germans. You can see that on how negatively the German media reports on any thing English compared to other European countries. Even Klopp said England was a far nicer country to live in than how the German media portray it. Remember after German speaking countries and USA Britain has most German people outside of Germany.

So in other words it’s just a cultural rivalry over old beef . And do you have any evidence to show that England vs Germany games get the highest TV ratings in Germany. Go ask any German football fan and they will tell you that they consider the Dutch , Italians and maybe even the French as their biggest rivals . So I think this so called is an overplayed , overhyped English narrative , to make themselves feel more competitive internationally than they actually are . And let’s be honest , generally speaking Spurs and Man City were never really rivals to Arsenal and Man United ( in terms of legacy , influence and dominance over the English League ) , they were merely rivals in a Geographical and Cultural sense . The same thing applies with England and Germany.
