The biggest paradox that I am seeing here is that Edward Snowden is promoting Signal but also Jack Dorsey. Jack is a red flag.

My thoughts exactly. Suddenly now I am wary of using Signal. Now, Dorsey is clear that it should be a red flag. But I watched an interview of Snowden from last year, and it's clear to me he's a Bullshitter. He said that Obama just wanted to "do some good in the world" (lies, the guy was a warmonger), and there are no aliens (yet, the Israeli guy came out and said there are) and a few other things. Also the way he tries to drag his "uhhh" and modulates his voice, it sends ALL my red flags up. Guy is a disinfo agent, maybe he didn't start out that way, but he is now. I don't trust him at all, and Dorsey even less. Anyway, sorry for the rant.

I moved my family to Signal long before the WhatsApp freakout. Prior to that, we were using Wire, but that company recently got sold to an American holding company and pivoted to enterprise comms, so I don't trust it anymore. I was using Signal when it was still called TextSecure and was using RedPhone for audio. Its certainly come a long way since then. The real game-changer is when Signal finally implements number-free registration. Until then, the OMEMO protocol over XMPP/Jabber offers that today on any supported server, but it isn't nearly as user-friendly. You can, however run it over Tor on a mobile for increased location anonymity.

_"... cannot view the content of the messages you're sending, thanks to encryption."_ It's proprietary. So they can do anything they want. They control the code, even when it's on your device. If they need to disable the encryption on a particular device, they will. And the only way to prevent them is to disconnect from the internet.

Just a two word tweet by Elon Musk had such a huge impact. That's mind boggling. Hope he doesn't say stop using KZread or Google.

actually is not a huge impact. ppl did download signal but once they understand they have no friends on this platform they will forget about it. most ppl dont even know signal or telegram. in my country most people dont even know whatsapp.

Facebook is being collecting whatsapp data since day one. People are just freaking out now because they made it public. I thought everyone knew this practice of data harvesting.

I remember during blackberry days, there used to be a bb pin and using that bb pin one could contact others. Somebody who didn't have one's bbpin wouldn't even be able to see the account. With all messaging apps today there is a problem. If someone has my phone number, then he can send me messages and check my online status. I really miss that feature of blackberry these days.

While I do love Signal's end-to-end encryption, I do want a complete WhatsApp replacement that has the same or better features like in WhatsApp. That is why I keep using Telegram. I've been using both WhatsApp and Telegram because my friends and families only prefer to use WhatsApp and I wouldn't miss WhatsApp at all.

In any app one has to have confidence on the statements of the programmer. Marketing will say anything. Complex apps are near impossible to third party verify. Truth is we don't really know what elements a vendor can see or use.

Signal respects users privacy and way more secure than WhatsApp

I have a knack for downloading apps, being an early adapter and when I don’t see anyone using them I delete them. Snapchat and vine in 2013. Signal in 2020.

Sadly there are not many contacts on signal. I prefer telegram.

Telegram is not end2end encrypted. It's only an opt-in feature for one-to-one chat. All normal chats and groups are not encrypted. Also their encryption is proprietary and they keep all your keys and messages. So they CAN see your messages even if their encrypted.

@@guitarheroprince123 Not all true though...They don't keep the encryption keys. All is encrypted. It's just cloud based...and not "native". That gives Signal the edge. But being cloud based gives Telegram an even bigger edge.

Tweets can be powerful, and this hardly needs to be said to people like Musk and Dorsey. I'd like to know what investments both or either made before sending those tweets to the masses, knowing what likely effect it would have.

I'm an activist and we've been using signal for years... my fav thing after privacy is how pristine voice memos sound, because of low compression. But I only use memos for unimportant personal messages lol

Signal doesn't even store the phone number on their servers. They create a hast from that phone number that cannot be turned back into the phone number. Signal does not store any of your data or meta data at all on their servers

I've made a similar video, and vola many of my viewers dm me that they didn't knew about that! So let's educate people around us! 😁

Good review but your are mostly missing the important parts. That being said the platform going rogue and canceling, banning or shutting down accounts is important and that also makes a privacy policy crucial but only IF they follow it to a tee. The other big issue is what happens with the data after it arrives on their signals. The real concern is that many platforms sell or re-sell that data, so being encrypted matters not if a platform is simply making sales for their data.

Signal will be good if there is options like hide blue tick, or last seen. and i hope someone out there will mods signal app. Both on ios and android.

Apart from privacy, Signal is pretty boring, which is why they're trying to catchup with Whatsapp features. I'd say adding the Status feature would keep alot of users engaged with the app(which is what Facebook is mostly worried about, hence they end up buying the service that most people are using frequently & with loads of data)

When I see Edward Snowden recommend signal I get suspicious. When Elon musk recommends it I think hmmm if too many key players at the top recommend it that means their is likely something wrong and sends me red flags stay away from signal. If the large companies try to take signal down then I am interested in it because that means it works.

I have tried to use telegram but even after years using it still i don’t see a lot of people installed telegram. Only some group chat happening in telegram. Most of the people are still on whatsapp. So I can’t really see how to switch

Yeah Telegram is pretty close to WhatApp when it comes to privacy. Don’t use it just go for Signal. Telegram collects lost of data just like WhatsApp. Telegram holds the encryption keys so they can unencrypt your messages, Signal doesn’t. Encryption in Telegram is not on by default.

I like what's app better I don't care about privacy as I have nothing to hide and signal will do they same in future when they see opportunity to sell alot of data

Yeah when I brought my first and personal phone I have installed signal . But still many of my friends and family still they use whatsapp in which it forced me to join whatsapp but I hope there will be a time that many people will migrate to signal. 👍🏻

Well, the threat is not a third party hacking into your chats. It's about the owner of the service themselves digging through your data. That's why telegram and Facebook based services aren't safe - they protect your data from others, but who'll protect your data from them?

I don't think it's a case of any of them being more insecure than the next (except maybe Telegram), it's about those companies having and storing information they don't need to have to provide their service. They didn't get to be rich by doing right by us.

I don't think Elon is pushing forward the signal. Rather i consider it a simple recommendation... Only if I'm not wrong👍👍👍

It's funny seeing how many people are ready to ditch WhatsApp and how few of them don't know messages are encrypted. Nothing is 100% private and that has been the case since the dawn of technology -- more specifically, the internet. If you want the best transparency, communicate by pigeons. I'd love to see how a group chat goes in that case 😂

Wait until everyone is using the app & depending on it so much. Then history will repeat again just like WhatsApp.

@@skiney agreed, they all have same modus operandi. If the product is Free for us, then We are their product.

signal is only encrypted if the other person uses signal too.

Is this similar to telegram? I like to use telegram for their file sharing features
