Session - Encrypted Messaging (without a phone number)

Ғылым және технология

Signal has been King (or Queen) of the secure messaging apps for several years but it’s not perfect. Signal has compromised anonymity over practicality. In this video I demonstrate Session - a secure, end-to-end encrypted messages app that provides complete anonymity. Session might just be the best secure messaging app available.

Exactly. IMO phone number messaging apps and non-phone number messaging apps are distinctly different, so there's no point in criticising one for not being the other

But there is no middleground between anonimity and no anonimity. It's like "sligtly pregnant". If anonimity is compromised - the app has no anonimity.

@@vibinpaul8910 in early 2000s it was widespread in the internet. It took extra measures (effort) and investigation to deanon someone in public chats or discussion boards and everyone had this by default. It was not 100% anonymity, but good enough if you are "good guy". The internet itself hasn't changed much since then but the software and the way how it collects and stores personal data - has. Apps and websites nowdays asks too much from user and requires registration - it's a total BS. Broken by design.

Using the being pregnant or not analogy, I think a better way to look at it is *risk* of being deanonymized. Aka, sure, you're either pregnant or not, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use the best contraceptives you can find

Hi everyone, After making this video I received an email identifying an important correction. Rather than explain, here's the email... "I just wanted to point out that Session does not actually use Tor. Onion routing is its own thing, a general computer networking concept. Tor is also its own thing, a network implementing that concept. Finally, Session has its very own implementation of onion routing using a network of Oxen service nodes which are not connected to or affiliated with Tor in any way. It might seem like a trivial nitpick at first glance, but it's an important distinction. Anybody can run a Tor node, many people have expressed concerns about compromised exits. There are some who may actually be discouraged from using Session if they think it uses Tor." Thank you to Zcyph for taking the time to email me and clarify this. 👍

The biggest problem that keeps me from using Session or any app like it is that I want an alternative to emails, which Session is not. It is a chat box for conversations. Emails do not require prior approval or a membership to be seen, so it really is like sending an old fashioned letter. But emails are totally sent in the clear and anyone can read them if they intercept them. I have yet to find anything that exists that is an alternative to the functionality of emails.

They don t store data, but my messages with a lot of people are blocked there between clients, so they exist in the app and i need them to disappear. Metadata is not such a big deal for this kind of applications, aniway not good if you want to say something and vanish .

I like your contents. I appreciate your works. But there are some mistake in your videos. In a video you said Signal doesn't have End to End Encryption Backup. That doesn't correct. Signal has this option since the beginning. Also session is not so secure nor private unlike Signal. Session doesn't have Perfect Forward Secrecy unlike Signal. Which means session uses the same encryption key to encrypt and decrypt the message. If the key get stolen all your previous and upcoming message can be decrypted. Which is perfectly mitigate in Signal with the help of Perfect Forward Secrecy. Signal change the key frequently. So, if the key get to wrong hand they can't access all the messages.

Hi Nadim , thank you for taking the time to comment, and for making your points in a polite and constructive manner. Before addressing your points, I will say that I thoroughly research all of my videos. I aim to ensure every statement I make is accurate and unbiased. Where I’m wrong, I pin corrections in the comments section. However, on this occasion I do not believe I am wrong. In regard to Signal offering encrypted backups, I refer you to this support article on the Signal website. support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007059752-Backup-and-Restore-Messages You can transfer your Signal account between devices but Signal does not store a copy of messages in the cloud. I also refer you to this other article, by a third party, which supports this. www.securemessagingapps.com/ In regard to your point on PFS, I recommend reading this article from Session on why they chose to use an alternative to PFS. getsession.org/session-protocol-explained Whether that makes Session less secure than Signal, I’ll leave that decision to the experts. However, I think anyone using either Signal or Session can be confident their messages are private.
