We use graphical examples and the psychrometric chart to show how dew point temperature and humidity percentages are very different.
Relative Humidity:
Not a good measure of water in the air (absolute humidity). RH is the percentage of how much moisture is in the air vs. how much it can hold. It answers the question “how full is the container”?
Dew Point:
The atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form. This is an accurate measurement of water in the air (humidity).
Properties of Air. We explain the difference between Dry Bulb, Wet Bulb, Relative Humidity, Humidity, and Dew Point.
We look at psychrometric processes such as cooling, heating, humidification, dehumidification, cooling, and dehumidification.
Relative Humidity vs. Dew Point
Modulating hot gas reheat, the more advanced form of reheat, allows us to precisely control the HVAC system leaving air temperature. As opposed to the older style electric reheat, which works well but wastes a lot of energy. Advances in HVAC controls and technology in HVAC systems over the years have made hot gas reheat very popular.
Energy recovery wheels are commonly applied to HVAC systems with the intent of saving energy. Some believe that the addition of an energy recovery ventilator will protect the conditioned space from high humidity at part load.
In this video, we look at an AC system with a rotary wheel heat exchanger and simulate space conditions at part load. ERV’s can be used to recover energy from the exhaust stream but do little to protect us from higher dew point levels at off-peak conditions.

    I sell and install VRF Heat recovery and I’m still fighting with and trying to educate myself on proper reheat using the glycol loop system from the waste energy. Definitely a learning curve willing to invest

    For a gymnasium in zone 3a or 2a, what would you recommend using when the OA gets up to 50% but you need to keep the area dry for the floors

    Thanks for the question Patrick gyms are tricky due to the high variation between the Peak and Part Load conditions. 30 Tons one minute, two hours later you have 5 tons. For a packaged RTU design we would recommend modulating compressors, modulating hot gas reheat, modulating heat (electric, gas, etc), and a controller this is designed to controls temperature and Humidity over all load conditions. You can utilize Energy Recovery Wheels to reduce total tonnage but you will still need the aforementioned components.
