People were complaining that they looked outdated in the ‘00s. However, my red/white S2R1000 was the most beautiful bike I ever owned, and the one that got the most compliments whenever it was ridden. Damn shame my local dealership Grenaded the engine, refused to fix it, and eventually the bike was sold off for parts.

The vast majority of riders love their bike just by looking at it even when it’s standing still. Aesthetics is an integral part of owning a bike that as years passed has become classic. So yes, it may be a better bike but they could give it a pointed headlight and name it Streetfighter 900. Disrupting a cult family of bikes like the Monster was a wrong move.

You guys here are not passionate Ducatisti. So it is expected to like the new Monster. It is an excellent bike. Fantastic in any way. But it is not a Monster. The Monster is the Ducati with the biggest fans. And we are all disappointed. We, the monsteristi, love the trellis frame. It is the most recognizable characteristic of our bikes. We, the Ducatisti, want the trellis frame. I have never bought bike other than Monster. And I never will. You see, the problem is, I will never want to buy this bike. All the Ducatisti I know, and I know a lot, can't even look at the new Monster. Excellent bike, but there are many other excellent bikes out there. It is not unique. Not recognizable. Not the Ducati we love. It is a Ducati for a lot of people, but not for Ducatisti.

I've also owned a Thruxton (900cc) and enjoyed it's light, nimble feel. The 1200 cc version has a little more torque that makes it fun. I went to see for a Thruxton R, the sound is very good, probably drives good aswell but the exterior design is so basic I find it boring, plain painting design (black or gray) and I don't like the big metal strap holder around the fueltank, also the lack of a mono arm. But It's probably the most true design to a retro cafe racer, except for the watercooler. And the scrambler series feels like a downgrade, maybe fun as entry bike or when I am 60 years old... I have loved the style of the Ducati Monster ever since I got into motorcycles. The Trellis really was eye-catching and distinctive. But the lightness and Panigale-ness of the front-frame is pretty awesome too. And now looking at the 20/21 Monsters next to each other, the Trellis does look a little dated.

I’m so glad the MT-07 was available for Ducati to design their new Monster from. The tank and side profile are near copies. Oh, oh, but.....since the all time best and most versatile naked, the MT- still has a steel tubular frame, does that make the Yami more European than the Dumster?🤣 Probably not since the MT is 100% built in Japan. And we all know the difference between Japan bikes and European bikes- European bikes have built in GPS to their nearest service center.✌🏻

Ah buddy, I can't bring myself to agree with you (though can't dispute any of the points you made) - I got into riding because I saw a Ducati Monster once when I was younger, it had a red frame and twin exhausts, I could see the engine and it made a racket that made me grin ear to ear. I bough my first Monster 2 years after getting my license but was surprised at how smooth the 796 was, the 821 seemed smoother still - it didn't have the 'rough and ready' character that I imagined it would. I feel like by chasing efficiencies they may be losing character - its the reason why as impressive as the Japanese roadsters are, I'm not drawn to them. It's the reason I didn't fall in love with the parallel twin in the 790 duke - I want my Monsters to be monstrous!

I think I read an article by Kevin Cameron in Cycleworld about valve springs and their early problems....it’s oscillations and breakage. I think he had stated that the desmodromic system was once an advantage but that it wasn’t needed anymore given the reliability of the current valve springs. I figured Ducati had accepted the reality of that to extend their valve train adjustment mileage to 18,000 miles, and because of that, the new monster is looking better to me as possible owner. I’m all over the place right now with what may be my next bike.......a good problem to have..I think!

I’ve driven Monsters for 17 years now and while I would love to drive a bike with all the modern toys, the new monsters have progressively become more and more like some kid’s idea of what a basic bike looks like. They’re not basic. The design is so fiddly it just isn’t pleasing to look at. Meanwhile, my 2006 R2S suddenly looks a lot more handsome than it did back when I bought it new. It’s simple, basic, well proportioned and without unnecessary bits. I think my next bike might be a BMW R nineT. Preferably the Racer. If I want something fast and cheap I can always get a Japanese bike. They’re brilliant at what they do. But I like bikes that look good. If people like the new monster that’s fine by me. But it isn’t for me.

Honestly, it's hard for me. I've had a 2000 M750 and I have a 2019 821, and while the new Monster keeps the "parts bin special" format of borrowed tech from the other bikes, the aesthetic plays a huge role and for over three decades the Monster has had that exposed trellis frame. On the Panigale it isn't nearly as visible because of the bodywork so a casual observer might not even notice the change to the monocoque style frame, on the Monster where it's lay bare it's a huge stylistic change. I get why it's still the Monster, but part of me also says "it should be in the Street fighter category instead."

I owned an S2R1000 and a M1100S. This new bike is no longer a monster. It doesn’t ride the same, look the same, or feel the same ergonomically. However, that’s going to be a good thing for Ducati IMO. People don’t want the classic monster anymore. The long-low wide bar layout, raw and instantaneous power delivery, the rumble and clatter of the dry clutch, the classic silhouette with the steel frame and round tank, these are the things that make a monster unique and desirable to me, but outdated and ill-tempered to the majority. This new bike rides like a proper roadster/naked should ride in the 2020s, and quite frankly it’s hypocritical for me to wax poetic about the old monsters, as I have replaced them with a Triumph STRS without an ounce of regret. I may buy an M1200R, just to own what is in my opinion the greatest monster ever built. But this new bike is a much needed departure from the old bikes that they can’t build anymore even if they wanted to. The 797 is also tempting as it is basically the final homage to the m900 that Galluzzi penned 30 years ago. We’ll see, nostalgia has yet to part this fool from his wallet.
