@@bossdunkz Scientifically speaking, it is the best solution. The capsules take thousands of years to decay along with the radioactive waste, meaning by the time the capsule is gone, the radioactive waste will no longer be radioactive. Basically just inert metal deposits in the middle of nowhere. Additionally, being buried means that none of its radiation will ever reach the surface or anything. Most radiation cannot penetrate solid materials (solar radiation travels through vacuum for this reason), but gamma rays can because they’re so small and require about one meter of concrete to stop their penetration. Being 200 meters to 1KM deep in the Earth itself means it’s extremely well insulated. As the contents are radioactive, we cannot risk it getting close to any ground water supplies or mineable materials. Geologists can determine what land has no such obstacles, provided it is also uninhabitable for nuclear burial and the location is documented so that no unsuspecting Geologists accidentally digs one up.

Thankfully we humans are capable of more critical thought there. How much of the electricity price is the fuel component? And how much is human costs? and the plant itself? There was a US study that calculated if the price of uranium would double, the price of power would increase by 10% to a whopping 1.42 ct/kWh. Now I AM crying seeing my power bill and the price that I pay to be much much higher than that. About 15 times higher in fact. Price for the consumer, in fact, is mostly taxes and transport cost. The best part? France, who has the highest amount of nuclear plants per capita, has one of the lowest costs of electricity in Europe.

as an artist, i appreciate a lot the effort put into the visuals of the videos of this channel color pallettes are peak simplistic vectorial artstyle both complementing generally interesting concepts i enjoy wantching them

@@oofted9038 Steve has done like ~2 scripts before, like for older videos. Philipp does *most* of the scripts. I'm also pretty sure there's another scripter named Lizzy? But pretty much Steve only does the voice overs now, he's not like an official parrot the team. Edit: Ok, I meant to say "part of" but parrot is funnier so I will leave it up.

I already thought it would be a bad idea knowing that space travel is EXTREMELY expensive and accidents are not unavoidable even till this day,but I didn’t even think about the chance of it coming back. What I thought was a bad Idea turned out to be a terrible one.

Between the triumphant tune and the line "which is something experts would call, very bad", this video was a masterpiece

Thoughts on using an accelerator to shoot material into space. Like the Hadron collider but rather than a loop. Create a shaft starting underground and extending out. As for orbits why not crash it into a large planet on the outer edge of solar system.

It dosent matter if these type of videos take weeks or even months to make, the wait is still worth it.

All the reasons you mentioned for getting to space were spot on. However, once you got into the space discussion it was quite handwavy. Like our only options were random directions or into the sun? You mentioned to moon but then were like naw, we can't make a mess without any justification there. We also don't have to fly it all the way into the sun, an orbit between us and the sun would be just fine. While reprocessing is definitely preferable, burying it comes with the same issues as orbits coming back. At some point in the future we may forget and stumble upon it. If we get the technology down for cheap orbital insertion (like a space elevator), then this becomes a real feasible technology.

And then the money side, how often does the US spend that much on random bs as it is? We got the money especially if it's the whole world together. The only real issue rn Is just them blowing up on launch.

@@kittygamer4124 aaaand you completely missed my argument. Stating there's a good chance it will come back to earth is not an argument, you need to justify it. By what mechanism would something in a parking orbit between earth and venus get deflected and what is the probability it will come back. This has to be weighed against the real risks of having it buried and forgotten here or having it leak out. As with all things, there is a subtlety in what to do so a simple "it might come back" is not sufficient. According to quantum mechanics you *might* spontaneous jump into the next room, it's not a question of might it's a question of how likely. Likewise, there was no real justification against using the moon. My point is that while there were some good arguments made around cost and energy budgets, the arguments around safety were wishy washing and fear mongering based with no real meat to them.

I think the difference here is more control related rather than how both can come back to bite us While launching debris into space or in a orbit around the sun, another planet we aren't likely to colonize in the future or all the way out of the system, physics can sometimes cause a rare few to come back towards due to a asteroid knocking a rocket in just the right area, or planet orbits lining up close enough to send off launched fuel straight back towards us. Once we launch the fuel outwards, we largely don't have many ways of controlling where said waste goes afterwards, and if it comes back towards us, suddenly we have a new issue to deal with, and it can more easily spread throughout our atmosphere if it hits us Meanwhile the biggest issues for putting nuclear waste underground is space requirements, and human incompetence over time, which we can more easily figure ways around right now. Though I do understand that there are legitimate ways to eventually shunt waste off into space with electromagnetic cannons and similar technologies, trying to do so now leads to us having less control over how we can directly handle it. The arguments are handwavy due to the fact most of it comes down to random chance, but I think people would feel better to have the known of staying away from a specific area than the unknown of one day a object could crash down with enough radioactive potential for a mini Chernobyl

@@The360MlgNoscoper yea but reallife lore doesnt fact check near as well as these guys, not that reallife lore makes up stuff, its just on some topics they cherrypick which data they want to look at & make very strong claims based on just that. Im sure kurzgesagt has to do the same thing, but at least we know with them they are doing everything they can to stop that kind of data from going out- at least without saying its an opinion first.

Video appeared on my feed, just came to say. Who would even think of this option 😂 Bet it's a great video looks well animated thats for sure.

The exception might be a few long lived isotopes like Tc-99 and I-129. Their radioactivity is sufficiently low, that a single failure wouldn't spell disaster. In fact, the hazard they pose is roughly equal to the uranium ore that was used to make them, only in a slightly more concentrated form. If we could achieve 99% succesful launches (as has been achieved by Falcon 9 and Atlas 5), you could accept a few "oopsies" happening, as the total amount of radioactivity in the environment would still be reduced. It would also have the benefit of eliminating the hypothetical "what if it leaks in a bajillion years" argument, assuming you've reprocessed and recycled the transuranics.

I wonder if the 'Rockets go BRRRRRRRRR' was a single take, or it took a couple takes to record that piece with total confidence.

my favorite part about the animated aspect of this video, and I'm not even 3 minutes in - is how nonchalantly the little birds are handling the extremely radioactive materials.

@@VanOri Or people who either download the videos or watch them on devices where the descriptions aren't available. It's a good policy. Their video on the effects of nuclear weapons was rife with what I consider to be factual errors, but I was still very grateful that they posted their sources so I could check them and find the mistakes. How many youtubers go to all that trouble (let alone TV documentaries) just so they might be called out on a mistake? It's fantastic that they do this. Science isn't about not being wrong because that's impossible. It's about being transparent enough that scientists have a better chance to catch each other when they're wrong. The whole point of the scientific method, Popperism, and experiments is that scientists _want_ to be proven wrong, so they have material from which to make even better theories to better explain the world.

They've been doing that the whole time, I thought. Not that I check their sources but their videos have always mentioned that they have good sources to all their info.

i always love it when you make videos on the topic of nuclear power, cuz i think these videos often do quite a lot to distigmatize their topics. they touch on all the essentials without overwhelming the viewer, and do so in a manner that's very entertaining and keeps people engaged. and the visuals only keep gettin better!

While I understand that the waste is somewhat manageable the timeframes involved and the plants themselves are just astronomically more dangerous compared the renewable plants especially if you factor in terrorism.

Yes! Nuclear waste is a real problem, but it's not Cthulu-on-speed-dial the way many anti-nuclear people talk about it. Just having taken the time to point out that 97% of nuclear waste is low or intermediate level waste that is either safe or minimally dangerous made watching the video worth it (a typical "nuclear facility" is a hospital or clinic with an x-ray or CT machine). Also, that burning coal produces nuclear waste as well. Even solar and wind have environmental downsides, especially when you factor in the eco footprint of the batteries. We just climbed out of a pandemic where we spent a lot of time not sensibly weighing costs/benefits/risks and are still paying the price. Nuclear fission has the misfortune of having all the characteristics that arouse the _perception_ of risk, despite having a very low _reality_ of risk.

It's not as great as you think. I remember them talking about the possible ends of the universe, like the big crunch vs big freeze and big rip, and at the end, they actually said they CHOOSE to believe in an infinite series of big crunches and big bangs in an eternal cycle because they considered it to be the most "uplifting". That is antithetical to science, to believe something without evidence because it is the thing you most wish was true. In fact, we have a word for that, it's called religion.

It's nice how we can watch great content like this on KZread for free. I love this channel!

Honestly a better way to deal with most trash is to burn it. As long as it’s filtered properly it’s actually very safe since most of it is burning plastic. Plus it’s a great way of generating power.

In the beginning of this video, I was like "there's no way it's impossible", but by the end of the video I was like "this might be the worst idea of all time"

The little details that go into the video production are amazing. I don't know if every intro is specific to the episode but I noticed the monkey having a radioactive cup of tea at 0:52 and that's incredible!

@@repingers9777 kurzgesagt doesn't really look anything at all like corporate minimalism? the only main similarity is a lack of distinct lineart which is very common in many different styles of art and animation. you don't really seem to know what you're talking about

this is the most easiest understanding channel instead of listening for hours all you have to do is listen and let your brain swallow it easily

There ought to be uses of the radioactive waste, like new energy generation forms which use the 11,000 tons per year.

Kudos to the Kurzgesagt crew - you all really crushed this one. The animation, music, and commentary were all on point. 'Rockets go Brrrrrr' had me laughing so hard I started crying.

I have no idea why Kurzgesagt is so opposed to nuclear (maybe they are invested in wind or solar), but this is one of the dumbest videos they've ever made, and yet they claim it took them 2000 hours. 1) We can already reuse most nuclear waste. This is commonly known, and many countries are already doing it. It's certainly something they would have known if they did 2000 hours of research. 2) I find it bizarre that they included the extra 97% of nuclear waste that's not dangerous and we can handle just fine in their calculations. Seems like you would only do that if you wanted to inflate the projected cost. :thinking: In reality, it would be at least 97% cheaper than what was projected here. 3) In fact, it would likely be much cheaper, since we'd be running off of nuclear energy, which is up to 3 to 10 times more efficient under ANY conditions, cause energy costs to plummet, more than making up for the costs several times over. 4) Nobody was suggesting launching waste into orbit. Seems like the only reason you would add that into the video is to belittle critics. Awfully arrogant. 5) Deep space orbits don't work that way. Launching into deep space would NOT cause it to bend back and come right back for Earth. The Sun does not have that kind of gravitational pull that far out. The only reason anything orbits out there is because of a lack of any opposing motion. The momentum from the rockets would take it right out of the outer orbit and into deep space, where we would never see it again. 6) If we launched it at the Sun, we wouldn't need it to go right in. Orbiting tightly around the Sun and getting gradually closer, is perfectly fine, and still wouldn't affect us in any way. There, Kurzgesagt. This comment didn't take me 2000 hours. It took me 2 minutes. I just saved you 1999 hours and 58 minutes of research on your followup video, where you admit you were totally wrong.

Can we appreciate how much work they put in to these videos just to fit in a meme or two every once in a while?

the person naming these sections was having a field day 💀

I used to work for a University Space Physics Dept, and we had a bit of a panic sending old kit off to be recycled once. We had an item, a cryostat that couldn't get flight certification (I learned all this after the fact) so was earmarked for disposal. So we arranged to pick up a load of old equipment for recycling, and placed it all in a large skip. Then one of the guys from the hardware dept came up to us in a panic, the cryostat had a window made out of Beryllium, which is why it could no longer be flown, because Beryllium is rather toxic. He was therefore rather concerned about how it was recycled, as it needed careful handling and disposal. So we had to suit up and get in the skip to recover it. Luckily, we'd been careful and not just thrown stuff in there. Nuclear waste is of course even worse, being radioactive and toxic.

The evidence is culture overrates Chernobyl and Fukishima. A design that was flawed at conception and the latter was just foolish to build. No reactor or required support equipment shall be under 150 meters MSL. The generators being where they were in 2011 was dismal choice. You must follow the seismic area as well in your engineering. Next generation reactorscdispose of most of these vulnerabilities.

Something similiar happened with thw colbalt-60 disaster in mexico, some random dude bought medical equipment with radioactive elements in it and then disposed it without the proper care The materials of the artifact were reporpused (mostly steel) but everything got contaminated with radioactive particles, thing turns that the radioactive parts of the medical artifact were crushed and a lot of tiny bits scattered all over the country

I remember watching some of the older videos they created back when they first came out & I'm still shocked at how much the quality has improved over the years. From information gathering to animation & writing, it's insane how much it's changed for the better. The fact it's all done as a passion project makes it even better & I hope they continue this for years to come.

I love that yeet is just... a word now. This is an educational channel of insanely high quality and they used the word yeet as an amusing tone-lifter, because it has escaped being a meme into a real actual mcfreaking word.

The best course of action would be to replace all fission reactors with fusion reactors because it creates a lot less waste.

7:55 Gotta love that eggplant spontaniously evolving into a devil spider and running off. Kurzgesagt really knows what worries me.

Finally, a Kurzgesagt video without any hint of an existential crisis. I love it!

No disrespect to the channel, but I did not like the score used here. Specifically the stuff from 3:50-4:00 which, skipping around, seems like they looped through much of the video. It did not fit and it took me out of the immersion.

I love how these guys just come up with some of the most insane ideas and make you think about the billions of uses and the impossibility of these ideas
