I had a similar thought experiment - what would happen if Tsar bomba was detonated within an indestructible layer of force field that's just big enough to house the bomb? Since the blast and shockwave can't expand outwards, where would it go if the force field holds and contains it in place? This video is a nice and similar representation of that, alberit the force field is the sea's pressure

The earthquake event which caused the 2011 tsunami in Japan was more than 6300 times as energetic as the world's nuclear arsenal exploding all at once. So if you put every nuclear bomb from every country which has them, put them all together to make one really big bomb, and then made six thousand more of those, and then detonated them all at the same time, it's _still_ less powerful than the earthquake was..

The forces we're talking about here are literally incomprehensible to the human mind. We do not understand numbers that large in any meaningful way. So making the calculation OP asked for wouldn't help anyone understand it any better. No better than the answer I gave, anyway. But to leave no strings undone, the answer to OP's specific question is this: It would take the equivalent of 185,714.3 Tsar Bombas being detonated all that the same time, all in the same place, to match the energy released by the Tohoku megathrust quake. Satisfied?.. 😔

I would love to see a video about if we detonated all of our bombs in the trench, just like you did in another video, but that video was above water. I think that would be interesting.

Ah! I had a feeling that not much would happen because of the immense pressure at that depth….

I would expect the initial sphere to be inverted like a torus with a very high pressure differential at the dead center of the bubble due to the pressure differential that occurs vertically from the water column. The sphere would then rebloom from the spike and the process would repeat until it reached the surface and destroyed the ship overhead.

Zsolt Vázsonyi Nah, its all unrealistic, closer to fantasy than anything else. I watched their video of detonating a nuke in the marianas trench and it said the earth’s tectonic plates will move and the earth’s orbit will change and that there will be a few kilometer high tsunamis. Its highly unrealistic but i guess its just for entertainment purposes (that video is actually quite old but i guess they’re still doing the fantasy not science stuff)

well it also said fishing boats and whales would have issues so they die, impacting food chains but that is aside from the question. There would definitely do something would definitely happen aside from the massive death of fish species which their absence, if a needed species like a keystone species, than the entire ecosystem could suffer terribly or just completely die

Not much. By the time the radiation gets spread wide enough to do any damage, it's been diluted too much. Water is also a great radiation insulator, so the effects of radiation are drastically reduced below the surface. Whatever radiation makes it to the surface in the bubble column, that gets picked up and rains down later, won't be anywhere near as much as the radiation produced by nuclear tests at ground level. So like Kurzgesagt said, "Pretty much nothing."

No Daniel Everest, it wouldn't. He said "In the immediate area." Not "The entire ecosystem." There would be immediate effects in the vicinity, but the radiation would be so diluted that it would *not* have a systemic impact on the larger ocean. It just wouldn't. The dozens of tests we have already done under the ocean also did not have a systemic impact.

When Kurzgesagt and Cody's Lab simultaneously debunk the same video at the same time.

Is it me or the way he says bubble sounds extremely cute

You said that it was a hydrogen bomb, but your little side cartoon showed fission happening, not fusssion. Also, that expansion and contraction of the bubble, that would cause waves propagating outward. I could be wrong, but I would think that they would have some impact farther away.

The dislikes were from flat-earthers. They think detonating a nuclear bomb would send us flying into the sun or something

Serious question... Instead of one nuke what if we took like an array of them across a sizeable chunk along a fault line. And lined it up across the length but also across the height in a long rectangular array. Say ten nukes vertically along the fault line and a thousand along the length of the fault line. And detonated them using a precisely timed arrangement, all at once. How would that go? Would it cause a sizeable underwater seismic event, how high on the Richter scale would it map out? And also how much of a tsunami would it cause? Not jus the wave height but how far would it travel to pose as a coastline risk to what distance.
