Why does your jar hurt when you bite down or feel sudden jaw pain? One of the big things we look at here at our practice is not only your teeth but your overall jaw system.
Your overall jaw system consists of 3 areas: your jaw joints (TMJ), your facial muscles that move your jaw up and down/left and right, and your teeth and bite. If your bite is off, your teeth are grinding, you feel clenching or if your face muscles are imbalanced, it can affect the joint. These issues can even cause an inflamed jaw joint too.
It's important to know that all those areas are connected, and if there is a problem with one of them, the other areas will be affected too which can cause you jaw pain (TMD temporo mandibular disorders).
Do you feel pain near the ear? Is there pain on one side of your face? Do you hear a clicking sound when you chew?
