Why the hell was that guy's first reaction when his dog was confronted by a wolf to pull out a camera and not protect his f**king dog? He only even yelled when the dog got seriously hurt. Like what the hell. I'm sorry, but that just angers me so much. People like that don't deserve animals. About a month ago our dog ran into a bear on a hike. We immediately hooked him up and left and gave that bear her space. How anyone's mind just turns to "let's watch this animal maul my family member on camera and possibly have the other animal seriously injured as well" is beyond me.

My dad put himself between a black bear and his best friend, who is a 110 pound Malamute after he ran behind my dad for protection. It was a random encounter less a stones throw away from our house. The bear wasn’t in attack mode and neither was my dad. But we live in bear/wolf/mountain lion country and all my dad ever carries with him is a knife. Most people would carry a gun in bear country and I think that they should if there’s even a remote chance of an encounter with a killer bear or wolf. Amazingly, my pops isn’t afraid of death, and I know he can take care of himself out there, whether it’s dealing with wolves or mountain lions. Here’s a tiny bit of history on why we don’t hunt bears: I’m a descendant of the plains tribes that were nearly wiped out by war and disease in the central part of North America but the one thing that couldn’t be taken from us was our culture - I’m from the northern plains - and we don’t hunt bears. Our elders told us not to for the bears are our brothers. With that being said, an old chief from one of the neighbouring tribes (Bloods of Alberta) chased and killed brother bear - a giant grizzly - armed with just his spear when the bear attacked the sleeping camp and ran off with a young child dangling from its mouth. Be safe out there.

Our country has wolves and Bobcats bears of all kinds. Problem humans are pushing wildlife into extinction by how forest are pushed back and homes are spreading across once had been forest homes of wolves bears mountain lions. People that live in those areas need to bring pets inside not outside alone. I have seen raccoons, animal other animals here in the city. If I ever get to live in the outskirts of farm countries I will build a large close in fence with wires around top of fence second a sidewalk all around the fence line. If my dogs need to go outside at night I will be outside with a loud speaker and a bright light that would be blinding. I love wild life but my dogs are the only reason I am alive.

Leaving animals chained outside is animal abuse, especially at night in the wilderness. If one is walking in the wild, have the dog on leash, or impeccably train your dog. Edit: I was not clear enough for some people on this thread. Some breeds do well in the outdoors. I know, I've even cared for wolves. The abuse is because of the CHAIN. A chained animal is handicapped & basically offered up as bait to other carnivores. Appropriate shelter is still important no matter what the dog breed & climate.

Wolves have a global population of around 200,000, which really isn't a very large number

If you live in an area with wolves: First off, don't leave your dogs outside overnight or for long periods during the day unsupervised. Second; when you take your dog for a walk in an area known to be inhabited by wolves, bring items like pepper spray, bear spray, a solid walking stick, an extendable baton, and a firearm (if possible, and only if you are comfortable carrying one and only if you are experienced and proficient with it) as a last resort. I wouldn't encourage anyone to bring a gun instead of the other items I listed. The noise of a gunshot will often, but not always, frighten away wild animals. The pepper or bear spray would still be the best option, because the best outcome is for you, your dog, and the wolf or wolves to walk away alive and without any serious injuries. Thirdly, when choosing a new dog, go for larger more capable breeds and mixes. If you are in a rural area in Alaska, Northern Canada, Northern Russia, Finland, Norway, or Sweden; a thirty pound Jack Russell terrier is probably not your ideal companion. Look for a Malamute, Irish Wolfhound, Mastiff, large Labrador, Rottweiler mix, Saint Bernard or Saint Bernard mix and make sure your new dog is prepared for the cold and snow. If you're dog doesn't have thick fur with an undercoat, get him or her some sweaters, a coat, cold weather shoes, and something to cover his or her head and ears. Some dog jackets and coats have an attached hood or head covering but beanies and other insulated hats and caps designed for dogs are also available. I live in the Rockies, about 5500 feet above sea level and we have a Redbone hound and black and tan hound mix named Cooper. Cooper is beautiful and weighs about seventy pounds, but his athletic build and fine thin coat of fur don't offer a lot of protection from the elements. Instead, he has several sweaters, shirts, and coats, in his own drawer in my wife and my chest of drawers. It seems silly, but it's necessary for him when it's -10°f (-23°c) outside.

Talking about the K locus genes ? I'm a bit familiar with it usually a wolf with two big B's usually die in the womb but one with 1 big B and 1 lower case b usually end up black and wolf with 2 lower case b's has the natural grey coat which can include brown colors too which is considered a grey morph also. Yes its been narrowed down that the black coat gene did come from dogs but likely it's not super recent likely generational so its like a helpful recessive gene that boosts the immune system.

I've got a question, not sure if anyone can help but I have a wolf dog, she's 75% wolf. I'd bring her to the dog park everyday, then one day, at about 2 1/2 years old, she started attacking submissive dogs and any female dogs that would come close to her. She never hurt any of them but would hold them down by their throat and make the most horrific noises. I'd have the owners of these poor dogs check them over for injury, there was never a scratch, but it was awful. At first i thought maybe she was having a bad day, but 5 days in a row this happened. I've never brought her back. She's misses her friends so much. How do I fix this, is it fixable? I've talked to dog trainers, they have no idea what to do. I need a wolf behaviorist but I can't find one. Any suggestions?

I used to walk this alpine white herder type dog. She had already attacked a small dog and bit him before. So I knew to keep her on a leash when I saw him, I always say ‘I’ was so strong that well, the leash SNAPPED and she went for the same dog again. Didn’t harm him this time but yeah it was not good. I think there’s a good reason that we bred these pups to be more ‘civil’. You need a lot of expertise to raise a ‘civil’ wolf. And they’re certainly not suited for city life, if that’s where you’re living...

We went to dog parks every day, rain, snow or shine, 2 hours a day, for 2 years. Then one morning she changed, it all changed. I don't know if I did something different, or what. I think because I'm in the situation it's harder for me to be objective. We'll be just fine if we never go to a dog park again but she loved it so much, had many dog friends and good times. I'd love for her to have that back and would be willing to try about anything for her. But long walks and open fields with no dogs around will still make her happy.

They started coming for my farm animals first and then one of my dogs and after losing 4 5 members of their pack, the wolf pack has moved on. Our wolves are about the same size but much lighter, about 100 lbs difference between the two so it takes 2 3 wolves to take one of the dogs down. The rest of the dog pack intervenes very quickly and the attack is always called off. Any wolf that stays or gets trapped is killed.

I've seen a few videos of lone LGDs getting attacked and even a pair of them getting attacked but I haven't seen anything on how effective a proper pack of LGDs fair against an attack. Then there's also the ethical argument. Is it unethical to leave a pack of working LGDs out to protect the livestock against wolves or not? I personally have a few LGDs but I only have a small homestead with ducks and chickens. We utilize a doggie door so our LGDs can come in and out during the night. We also don't have any local wolves, just coyotes, foxes, hawks and neighboring dogs that have made a meal of our poultry in the past.

Wolves are predators, any animal the pack encounters that they can kill will be consumed. But a pack of working line Live Stock Guardian dogs will deter wolves. My male CAO's would dispatch several wolves in a matter of seconds. The vast majority of wolves weight 115-135 pounds, not the 180 pounds frequently referenced, and in nature might makes for right. So when a 160-200 pound dogs, bred for centuries to combat and if necessary dispatch wolves confronts a wolf, the wolves in most instances choose not to engage in combat with the dogs, because the risk outweighs the reward. If they are injured, they might starve and die, or be killed by other pack members, that is the harsh reality of nature. But when a wolf pack encounters a single dog, even a large specimen, the many can overwhelm the one. I'm glad you were honest in 'the many dispatch the few'... I've seen the folly of the alleged 'Wolf Killer'. Yes they hold their own against 1 lone small desperate wolf, or when they're a pack of dogs (ironic, pack of wolves). The propaganda of 'Wolf killers' speaks volumes about man... nature & science cares about 'power to weight ratio' & 'psi' or intelligent instinct. No 'wolf killer' can match it, even though they may hold their own by size. *Watch how Huskies, Spitz, wolf breeds playfight... they use the advantage of a long snout to grab leg, & rake teeth down bone slicing major femoral arteries in legs. Tacticians, will kill rival by causing them to 'bleed out'. How a breeders Husky died from a fight with another pack member. Now imagine a wolf, who's careful of risk & injury, could mean deathnell untreated in the wild. They aren't scared of alleged 'wolfkillers', cautious yes, but they don't have the advantage of human intervention/veterinarian treatment, & luxury of a full belly of food always.

This ignores a host of breeds that were bred to either kill wolves or fend them off. Not to mention most Grey wolves are not as big as the breed here in north America. An Ovcharka will kill a wolf, a pair of them will fight off a whole pack; the average Eurasia Grey is only 45kg where as an Ovcharka on average is 76kg there is a massive size difference. Some Ovcharka exceed even 100kg And this is just one breed. The largest wolf ever was 62kg Timber Wolf and that was up in the McKinley valley in Alaska. Yes wolves are dangerous preadators but they aren't some crazy dog killing beast, don't tie your dogs up and leave them out for a starving pack of wolves. Especially if your dog is under 40kg.

@@kaylahbkitty9691 You do realize the average female Ovcharka is larger than the largest male timber wolf ever recorded right? Thet are nearly double the size of a wolf and were bred to kill them. Like a pair of Ovcharka will fend off an entire pack of wolves, hell they will fight off a bear. Bite psi is meaningless as the size and strength of a dog is not consistently tested or documented let alone a wolf. For example an Ovcharka broke a man's arm in a bite suit during training does that mean all Ovcharka bite that hard? No it doesn't, just like assuming all wolves bite with 1000psi is foolish. That well exceeds the threshold of even a wolf's bite by the way as I have never heard of a wolf breaking a mans arm with a bite in a bite suit. But such notions are dubious regardless, what we do know is any Ovcharka will overpower and dominate a wolf as seen an documented in captivity. Your argument is no diffrent than the idiots who think a 45lb Pitbull is stronger and more deadly than a 160lb Rottweiler. Size is the biggest factor and there is a massive size discrepancy.

In Iraq late at night(2am-3am) it was not uncommon to see two rival packs of 20-30 Domesticated Feral Dogs fighting and killing each other in the street. Those dogs would eat anything, from a Dead Donkey, Human feces, rats, cats, even deceased people, and other dogs. I have seen 4 or 5 dogs killing and ripping apart a puppy in the middle of the day. When turned loose to fend for themselves they essentially become wolves that are not afraid of people. That is why the common dog is far more dangerous to humans than any Wild Wolf. I once saw a Kangal (presumably someone's pet that got out) surrounded by about 30 dogs being attacked by to or three dogs at a time. He stood his ground, and would tear into and throw off the attackers and then two to three different dogs would jump in. This process repeated several times, before our unit moved on. I did not get to see the end result, but that breed is very courageous. Nature is truly Brutal.

I don’t understand why the wolves regard a domestic dog confined to his porch or yard as competition. They are supposed to be intelligent, right? Surely they must notice that the dog doesn’t go hunting for food in their forest, doesn’t try to mate with their pack members, basically gets all his needs met by his human family, and spends most of his time close to them. So where’s the competition with the wolf pack? Surely the wolves are intelligent and observant enough to see these things. Yet they kill dogs who are no real threat to them. I don’t understand.

As she said, a wolf packs territory is giant and people live within them. To them their territory doesn't end at the garden fence. Wolves are smart, but they don't follow human logic. Any wild animal knows to avoid a wolf pack and not behave somewhat confronting and inviting like a leashed dog does, standing there pretty much waiting for them. A leashed dog has been practically conveniently pretrapped for them. For a wolf to eleminate every canide outside the pack immediately without checking, if each individual has truly been competition or a threat in the past, is efficient, low risk and high benefit. They behave on instincts that could be described as evolutionary knowledge.

No matter where you live, chaining dogs up outside is wrong. Have a good electrified perimeter fence and allow your dogs to be able to get inside a shed etc via their collars. It is like an electric cat collar which has a sensor which lets them in or out. Plus if the wolves get in, if the collar has small spikes on the wolves will suffer if they bite the dog's neck. Have more than one guard dog and an alarm system. Or keep the dogs inside and just have a rifle/shotgun. Fire a warning shot first but if they don't get the message-you fire.
