WOLF ATTACK - WINTER WOLF SYNDROME & ITS DANGERS

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Every winter, hormones flood wolves' bodies and their character changes turning Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde. They can growl, defend their habitat and sometimes become untouchable, a shadow of their former, loving self.
Today Animal Watch discusses 'Seasonal Behavioural Aggression', otherwise nicknamed 'Winter Wolf Syndrome' which affects all wolves, but noticeable in captive situations particularly. High Content wolfdogs can suffer from this too.

Hi I need to write here at the top that ‘Winter Wolf Seasonal aggression’ does NOT make wolves in the wild more confident and dangerous to humans. It does not make them kill more sheep or bothersome. I am concerned how many people have written or suggested this. Wolves are only challenging in captivity as they are confident with their keepers. Wild wolves will never approach or challenge people.

I know a mid content that gets winter wolf 5050 mix. But multi generational, some of its siblings threw much higher wolf content genes. It acts the most wolfy out of its siblings. Strangers will get eaten. Wants to escape, gets weirdly vocal and cuddly with the owners and some of its friends. Dislikes and distantnces itself from its dog pack members, only shows interest in other wolf hybrids or the howls of the pure breds where it lives. Goes from being more day time animal to a bit more nocturnal. Worst months she turns into a coyote slayer in terms of she doesn't want them anywhere near her little outside den/shelter and deffs not near the house. She does however get bad winter bulking and gorge eating desires earlier in the year. We believe that's a trait from the spefic mackenzie valley wolf lineage they have or artic wolf would make sense. But certain seasons they'll gorge eat and given plenty of food in captivity they'll gorge up to 37 percent of their body weight per meal if you let them. Instead we cut them back and go to frequent feeding intervals and let them gorge about that amount over a day versus in a meal. Largest sibling or relative dogs eat 60 to 70 pounds of food if allowed, they get cut back a little.

Wolves are not dogs, despite looking very much like them. They are not a good choice to keep as pets. They need tremendously secure enclosures, and their nature is running wild and free. It is sad to imprison them and try to make pets out of them.

I want to add that I feel like winter wolf syndrome and seasonal aggression are 2 different behaviors..... WWS you can't get anywhere near the containment and SA is winter grumblies that aren't as intense. SA can also affect other lower contents, it's not just limited to highs. My lower mid has a low dose of winter grumblies right now. She isn't being mean or anything, just being more opinionated over things she usually isn't.

I guess the cold isn't shrinking those "nuts". I never realized that was a thing, considering that I often considered most animals getting their freak on just before the fall season because SOME animals hibernate and give birth during the winter so that they are ready for the Spring which is when new babies appear. But I never thought some dog breeds can get sexually anxious or aggressive during the Winter season. But it makes so much sense.

Jeez Louise!!! Scary stuff. Hi, just yesterday I commented on your vid regarding Kal and Show Huskies - I live in southern Ontario Canada where the temperatures go from extreme heat and humidity 35C + to very very cold -25C, I am moving 250km north where the winters are longer and summers shorter and am considering a Husky. (I have had German Shepherd, English Sheepdog, Labrador Retriever and Weimaraner(smartest of them all by far) Up north I suppose a Husky would be happier. I also watched you video on high content wolf dogs, most interesting. Getting to my point and question. I believe I have a basic understanding of what constitutes a high content wolf dog being lineage, however, is it possible that some dog breeds, Husky, Malamute, Samoyed, Inuit dogs who have kept the external appearance of wolves also have traces of winter wolf syndrome? I know I know for you experts this may be clear cut but to a layman..well I am just doing my homework 🙂 I want an active outdoor dog, having only had "family" dogs would the northern life with a husky be too much and should I get a Golden Retriever or a Bernese Mountain dog? LOL Anyhoo, thanks to those who choose to pitch in. I enjoy reading all animal lovers comments. Thanks A.S. for this most interesting and informative series of videos. Cheers!

I am so glad I found this channel and I have watched your channel and in particular videos about wolves. I know they are wonderful and majestic beings with great expression, however humanity and its mistakes have mis portrayed these wonderful beings. The reason for which I can fully help you on where it comes from; My studies are in Ancient Sumerian cuneiform and culture (dedicated my life to it) and since they are the oldest proven written language then I can further help. In ancient Sumer (Ancient Southern Iraq for those whom are unaware) the subject of a 'dog' had a dualistic nature and its dependant on what type it was. The dog of a city or household dog was sacred as its saliva was believed to have healing properties. Now dogs back then were not the cute fluffy things they are now, back then on average were the size of Bullmastiffs AND they could get much LARGER. However there was another type of dog that was not as venerated and in Sumerian this was named UR-Barra (literally translated to Outside Dog) in other words a wolf. Of course there was Ur-Tibra meaning puppy dog and so on. The LAST SUMERIAN king (literally the last of the Sumerian periods whom actually died in the mountains fighting the Guntee tribe) of the Sumerian times was called UR-Nammu (see the tablet of UR-Nammu as evidence). So to sum up man's WRONGFUL impression of wolves started in the Ancient Sumerian times. The Sumers got so many things right (otherwise we would not have had the many advances we have today=base 60 and irrigation farming being the least of them) and I admire their culture greatly, However in this instance they got it WRONG!

Tibetan mastiffs are the same. Female as one season a year. At this time, all Tibetan mastiff males will starve for weeks like they are depressed. I'm not sure about the Chinese Tibetan mastiff. This starts at the beginning of October and January. Tibetan mastiff s only blow their coats once a year.

I am greatful that here in the USA, people keeping a wolf dog hybrid as a pet is extremely limited. I have volunteered my skills in animal rescue for over 12 years. In that time I have not seen one wolf dog, nor have any shown up in city shelters. In my experience, I have seen people get a dog for all the wrong reasons. Then when the dog does not live up to their ridiculous expectations, they dump the dog at the local shelter or worse yet they abandon the dog to fend for himself at the side of the road.

Not sure where you live but our US wolfdog sanctuaries are over flowing.... too many back yard breeders selling too high of content to the inexperienced or selling to illegal areas. There are thousands of wolfdog owners here.... I'm one of them.

Hi, all those dog breeds in your dog’s ancestry are very feisty, and the Akita and malamute are stubborn and dominant. You must have the dog neutered asap and get him to a behaviourist. Do not leave your dog alone with your child and make sure the child doesn’t hit or irritate the dog.
