Why do we keep Dexter cattle ?

There are many reasons we keep these small cattle, and they are all good ones.

    I agree completely. I live in California, US and we only have an acre, but I've got four Dexters, one of which is a bull. I've had Dexters for four years now, and the only reason I've had a vet out was for a foxtail in one's eye and AI'ing. They're the best. Keep up the good work!

    Sam Evans, do you also feed supplements or can they graze all year on your acre? I found out about Dexters a few years ago but only got my land recently. I am thinking I would love a couple of Dexters instead of sheep. Any issues with predators? May I ask where you are located in Cali? Thank you!

    @@thisorthat7626 Unfortunately in my neck of the woods we don't get enough rain to have enough grass on an acre so I just feed hay year round, which isn't ideal, but they do well. I do occasionally feed supplements like grain to my cow because I milk her and she needs that boost. I also provide mineral/salt, but you need that no matter where you are. And I haven't had a single predator issue despite there being all sorts around my place like bobcats, coyotes, bears and mountain lions. Best of luck!

    Morning Farmer P. Your cows look so happy and friendly! I believe happy animals taste better too. :) I'm also a big fan of local produce so I may have to look you up on FB next time I'm round your way, and see if you have any dexter meat for sale! :P Quick question: What is your opinion on organic meat/dairy, and what are the benefits and drawbacks from a farming perspective? Keep up the awesome work Farmer P. :)

  • @FarmerP

    @FarmerP

    4 жыл бұрын

    Dave G. I absolutely agree, happy cattle produce the best beef. If you want a beef pack you can order it through our Farmer P, Bradley farm page Dave, your name is then put on a beef box. The next two packs are likely to be under 20kg as they are smaller steers. We have a couple of packs available for the end of a November.

    On the Organic front. I tried it for 18 years. Trying to farm 100% organic today is just not an option. In the last ten years our country has been invaded with many foreign and invasive plants that our eco system has no natural defence against, on top of that we have a large industrial site South West of us that holds a handsome crop of Ragwort and thistle plants that seem to love dumping their seed all across us every year. Another issue with claiming organic status is how much chemical crap falls out of the sky every time it rains, not much I can do about that. So, no I don’t claim to be 100% organic, I can’t do it, however we limit chemical spraying to the bare minimum, only treating one or two parcels of pasture every other year with a broadleaf herbicide to knock back any Docks, thistles, ragwort, buttercups and nettles. Everything in moderation.

    Stupid question Farmer P is that there full size? Or can they get bigger and can you just keep one or do you need at least 2?

  • @FarmerP

    @FarmerP

    4 жыл бұрын

    Kevin Sawyer Not a stupid question at all Kevin. Dearer size depends on the breeding, the usual practice is to put a short legged bull on a long legged cow, or vice versa. I have always put long on long because I wanted a bigger beast for beef production. The animals in this video are cows and their 2019 calves, so the larger animals here are fully mature. Bovines are herd animals and although you can keep just one I would prefer they had company. The normal routine to get started would be to buy three in calf heifers, or an in calf cow and a young steer or whatever combination would suit your set up. I recon you can run 1.5 cattle per acre if you have good ground.
