Teat Sealing & Checking For Empty Heifers This Year

Ойын-сауық

The girls are back to teat seal the heifers which I am fully sold on that it is money well spent. Kerry is joining them today who is a Vet and this year they are pulling any out that are suspicions of being empty and she is going to check them and see if they are.

    As a keen breeder myself. The variables are stature and live weights of the sire. As the nz BVs are across breed then you do have some short jersey bulls and naturally lighter live weight BVs.

    Awesome video as always Andrew! Answering your question in my opinion some of it is down to genetics but same cow and bull can have bigger offspring and some could be smaller, and I believe some of it is down to there feeding as a calf. I find my later calves just never do as well as the July born calves. They eventually catch up after one season of milking.

    I think that’s due to the earlier ones being fed milk for longer. I did talk about that a bit a while ago, I spoke to my cousin who said we need to feed milk for longer to get more calcium into them for growth which makes sense. Definitely agree with what you’ve said 👍

    Dear Andrew Size and uniformity of heifers and cows is a combination of genetics , sires used and management of the cows from calves to heifers and cows . Broadly speaking on genetics it comes down to cow model of the bull used American Sires tend to be taller in stature , whilst European Bulls from Holland , Scandinavia , Australia tend to be shorter and suited to pasture based systems . On the management side it comes down to growing out the animals consistently until fully grown . Once calves are weaned you would want to start feeding and working towards a high energy carbohydrate diet ration to enhance growth of the cows . So ask your feed consultant and nutritionist to tweak the ration in favour of more carbs and the correct ratio of protein and fats . Useful feed additives and buffers would work well to promote growth uniformity which would prepare the cows for their upcoming first lactation and still be able to grow fully . As a general rule of thumb look for the happy lines in the cows as a visual to indicate cows are in top condition . Looking at the cows in your parlour they do seem to be in good shape , maybe include a bit more silage and concentrate in their ration for height and size .

    Also you could apply some basics of the aaa system. I use this in its simplest form, short cows get sire that adds stature and tall cows get a shortish bull that adds capacity to add width. Other traits all bulls must have is wide rumps and strong udders. I understand your looking for uniformity in your heifers and it's annoying have such extremes

  • @peasant5612
    @peasant56122 ай бұрын

    Another thing you mentioned at the end about your heifers variation is some mature later. So they Mayne average heifers that become better producers with age. Think we all get then variables you mentioned. There's the rule of thumb and then there's always those exceptions to the rule in breeding 😂
