Why do we get headaches? | Head Squeeze

Ойын-сауық

This week on #AskHeadSqueeze, Greg Foot is answering the question "What are headaches, and how do we get them?". Subscribe for more fascinating science videos: bit.ly/SubscribeToEarthLab
Now, we here at Head Squeeze are absolutely not doctors, and if you're having serious or regular headaches you should see your physician. But if you're interested in why headaches happen, then Greg wraps his head around that, and more, in this video.
Why do we get migraines and vascular headaches?
Vascular headaches actually happen because of changed blood flow to your brain. Science doesn't quite know why, but we've got links to some of the theories below. Is it because of a localised lack of oxygen caused by a spasm in the cerebral arteries?

    I've also read in places that when you become dehydrated you can cause an intense headache, because the lack of moisture can cause vasoconstriction around the brain. Again also, with sinus problems there can be vasoconstriction that can cause a headache. Although this is a bit odd, on occasion where I have to hold in a sneeze by physically holding my nose, I always get a headache 10-20 minutes after doing so...

    Had a visual migraine recently. Saw a stripe of flashing zigzags and then lost half of sight in one eye, couldn't understand any text during that time and it was really hard to put together an intelligible sentence. And then the pain hit me. Well since 4 days of the week I'm usually with a headache of some sort, the pain from a migraine well was painful, but the worst part was the disorientation.

    What exactly are sinus headaches? And in what part of the brain do they occur? My father explained it to me, but I am all confused with the meninges headache and the sinus headache. I'm confused because her told me that sinus headaches take place on the sides of your head, and then he told me my headache was at the top of my head (meninges). I'm confused. Could you formulate a helpful and constructive video and help me to understand. I'd highly appreciate it!

    I frequently have migraines with the "zig-zag lines in my vision" symptom. The odd thing is that the intensity of the migraine varies. Sometimes it hurts like mad but other times its just a slight discomfort. I will usually take paracetamol and go to sleep and my day will be wasted. Anyone has any idea how to prevent it or at least make the attack less frequent?

    Looked this up bc I currently have a melon smasher since lunch (it's now bed time). One I thought was due to not eating on time. My migraines usually come with flashing lights, nausea and irritability (Okay, so I am a bit of a shit when I am in pain). As none of this is happening, I was curious. I am in possession of 2 X chromosomes, a fact that I am proud of 99.99% of the time... save for migraines. Could. totally. do. without. I found this video completely informative and entertaining. Not an easy feat mid tension migraine. Go on you.

    I have a cold at the moment and was wondering about viruses and infections. Why is it that (bad) bacteria come into your body to harm you? Wouldn't it make more sense to live in harmony with your body, surely their life expectancy is longer if you live?? Or is it that if you die they can 'eat your whole body'? Also, when they aren't making you feel miserable what do they survive on? Hope you answer this I'm really interested in any interesting info you have on bacteria/ microorganisms! Thanks a lot! • @EeekiE

    @EeekiE

    A cold is usually caused by a virus, and a massive chunk of Human DNA source material has been added to by viruses over the generations, just hitching a ride. They usually have little effect, or can be beneficial. As for why we get the bad ones? Viruses and bacteria aren't thinking beings. They can't do planning or negotiating. They have no foresight. Viruses in particular are almost fragments or DNA code that 'say' nothing but how to make more copies of themselves. The only thing needed to survive, as any other form of life on this planet, is that you can adapt and reproduce. The simple answer as to why we get bad viruses and bacteria is simply because they work. They survive long enough in us to make more copies and to spread to a new host. They don't need to be beneficial and symbiotic because they work good enough as they operate now, and nature and natural selection is all about 'good enough'. If they didn't work, they wouldn't be here.

    My question is why are longer things easier to brake than shorter ones? E.g- A shorter stick is much more difficult to snap in half than a longer one.

  • @EeekiE

    @EeekiE

    8 жыл бұрын

    You have more leverage to break the stick when it's longer. Just as opening a door from the end of the handle can take one finger, but doing it from near where it turns can be difficult even with all your weight pressing down. The further you are away from the pivot point, or the point you want to break, the less force you need to apply.

    humans are made of atoms. the atoms we are made of came from the core of a star that died billions of years ago. Since we are made of star stuff, I believe that the iron, along with other elements in the stars, is in our blood because yeah... just a possibilty

    Blood is filled with iron - it's an essential part of it, forming haemoglobin, which carries oxygen through the body. This iron is what causes the taste - people with iron deficiency tend to suffer fatigue and dizziness as their blood is incapable of working properly.

    Adrian Larios Are you suggesting that stars are made of iron?

  • @LariosGiveNoFucks

    @LariosGiveNoFucks

    9 жыл бұрын

    I'm suggesting that when really big stars run out of hydrogen, helium begins to form heavier elements which eventually form iron. When iron forms in the core of a star more and more of it begins to slam into the center of the star. This eventually causes a shock wave that blows up the star and scatters these elements throughout the cosmos. These nebulae eventually form other stars, solar systems, planets, HUMANS, and just about everything we can see in the universe.

    I'd like to ask a question: why do when we blow air from our mouths slowly it is hotter than when we blow it faster? I don't understand how can it be since theoretically there's more energy involved in blowing faster. Thanks in advance :)

  • @EeekiE

    Are you keeping your lips in the same shape as you blow each way? If you purse your lips, like you tend to do when blowing hard, you create a positive pressure in your mouth, and your lips act like a Venturi that allows the air to expand. Expanding gas has a cooling effect, just like your deodorant can. If I breathe slowly with my mouth open, as if to steam up glasses, it feels warm. If I do the same wide open mouth shape and empty my lungs quickly, almost like a cough, it still feels warm. If you make a jet of air our of your mouth and saw it on a thermal camera, I bet it would be cone shaped, and also be dragging along ambient air too, both acting to cool it down. Just guessing though from a minute of experimenting as I liked your question.

    I've suffered with "chronic mixed headaches" for years. After doing some research, I found that adding magnesium supplements to the diet really helps reduce headaches. It's been the single most effective thing I've been able to do in years. And it's reduced my headaches by as much as half. My pain doctor recommends magnesium for not only headaches, but aid in the reduction of muscle spasms, aid with sleep and many other areas. It has really made a difference in my life. You need to check with your doctor first, before starting this magnesium regiment though. And note that there are MANY types of magnesium on the market, if one doesn't work well, try another brand.

    hello , Mr. Foot. I am from Indonesia and i myself is the apprentice of every science. i love your channel and explanations.i notice you said at near the end of the session of this, about headache, that german scientists was not sure why pain killers would cause headache as long term sideeffects...the answers are :1. pain killers causes gas. the chemical is filtered by kidney and liver (detox process) and liver after longtime will swell with gas. thats why many physician prescribe painkillers with gastic medicine like the aluminium and magnexium.2. when liver is hurt, it automatically affects eyes. according to chinese medical record. 'our veins are connect one to another. for your research please search through google for reflexology chart. it is all there. and when eyes are affected, you will get all sorts of headache.some headache can come from nostril problem. when you get polip or something like rice or other organic being stucked inside your nose, you will get an inflammation or mucus traffic jam , it causes forehead pain.sorry for my bad english.

    Reflexology is bollocks. Why are KZread comments such garbage. My dad just started using it and has now told me cancer is just a way to make money, and that's why they won't cure it. What is it with KZread and quacks?

    Recently subscribed to this channel and like it very much. However, I do have one complaint. Do you really need all those sound effects for the on-screen animations? I don't mind the occasional sound effect, but I think you're over doing it a bit. I say cut the amount in half or so.

    Good thing orgasms are a natural cure for headaches, then... meaning using that as an excuse to not have sex is completely illogical and in fact counter-productive.

    Skeletor Jopko Not all headaches - I can personally vouch that migraines are not helped by sex or orgasm (although, as I've always said, two different people can be affected differently by the same stimuli), ;)

    Skeletor Jopko There is weird cause of headaches which is caused by orgasms: some people can`t orgasm because of that. sad but true.
