Where Does Energy Come From? | Martin Archer | Ask Head Squeeze

Ойын-сауық

This week on #AskHeadSqueeze Thursdays, Martin Archer answers a question from CuttlefishPi on our Head Squeezers Google+ community. Where does Energy Come From? Martin reckons this is really three questions - let's hope he's got the energy to tackle them all.
00:46 Where did the idea of Energy come from?
The concept of energy, and its name, probably comes from Aristotle and the ancient Greeks and they're word energeia. Gottfried Leibniz came up with something like the modern concept of energy with his vis viva or living force in the 1670s and 80s. But the idea of energy didn't really catch on until the 19th century with the advent of thermodynamics and reformulating of Newton's laws of mechanics.
01:32 What is the energy in the Universe?
There are loads of different types, but they can generally be lumped into two categories. Kinetic energy is all about motion, and even heat is included in this broad group. The other category is potential energy, which you can think of as stored energy. One of the amazing realisations of the 20th Century was that matter itself is simply highly condensed energy - energy that can be released, as in a nuclear bomb. But energy can't be created or destroyed, it can only change form.
03:59 Where does energy come from?
At heart, energy is an abstract concept. But the concept exists because of time symmetry. In 1915 German Mathematician and Theoretical Physicist Emmy Noether proved that if the laws of Nature have a symmetry then there must be a physical quantity which is conserved. She showed that energy is a consequence of the fundamental time symmetry of Nature, without this symmetry energy would not exist and nothing would exist.

    As many have already pointed out, the question of the true origin was left untouched. Referencing a model of the universe that describes our expansion from a singularity brings us to a cosmic beginning, but leaves us with the original question. I think a good and a safe answer is that a transcendent cause brought energy into existence which is modest and is supported by the big bang theory.

    Martin Archer Thanks for the response Martin and fair enough: obviously I've never been satisfied with that aspect of Big Bang Theory. It's a scientist's way of saying 'we don't (or can't) know', which is a fine response, but no fun. I'd enjoy some random guesses and theories. Otherwise it seems we haven't really answered the question of where energy comes from.

    This question has bothered me for so long. *Is there a process that changes heat energy?* from what I have been told, the sun, for example, releases multiple types of energy. Among them is heat energy. I've never heard of an example of heat energy changing to any other type of energy. According to this video, heat energy is kinetic energy, so does that mean that the heat just naturally becomes potential energy because kinetic energy becomes potential (and a few others), right.....? But what kind of potential energy would heat become if it does change into potential energy? And if it does not change to potential, *What does heat change to?*

  • @Yous0147

    @Yous0147

    10 жыл бұрын

    Heat, as far as I know, is described as being a form of kinetic energy. In practical use today, heat is usually used to generate things like electricity via mechanical movement of e.g. a turbine which generates mechanical energy (which is also kinetic energy). The principle is the same as with steam engines, where the heat in form of steam leads to movement of the mechanical parts. This can f.ex. make the wheels of a train move, since the heat energy is converted to mechanical energy. If you're asking where heat goes to in general, it's somewhat simple as well. As you might know, scientists today believe (to my knowledge) that heat (a lot of energy) is when small molecules vibrate, and cold (less or no energy) is the absence of vibration. When something is hot, the molecules that that something is made of is vibrating intensely. If that something is surrounded by cold, less-vibrating molecules, the two kinds of molecules will bump into each other and even out the vibrations, which leads to the heat being evened out as well. So the vibration of the something hot will go down while the vibrations on the cold will go up, making the temperture evn all-around over time. That's the principle of it, though the time it takes for it to happen depends on various factors. Atleast that's how the theory goes about heat.

  • @MattKChannel

    @MattKChannel

    10 жыл бұрын

    Yous0147 Ah ok, so the heated molecules transfer the heat to molecules around them. So my next question is: is the amount of heat energy out there increasing? Is the heat energy in the universe changing to mechanical energy or non-kinetic energy faster than the heat energy in the universe is being created? And if not, then does that mean that the universe is heating up? And where does the universe continue to get the energy to expand? is it momentum created by the big bang? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but they are why I sometimes doubt the law of conservation of energy and that really bothers me a lot.

    My view of energy is just as an abstract idea that makes it easier to solve problems in physics. It's almost like how they went to magic to explain certain events or divine intervention back in the "ancient days". Energy is a very convenient explanation on how everything works in the universe. Furthermore, I believe even with all of our discoveries and inventions, we know not much more about the universe as we think we do. Back in Greek times, they believe the gods controlled everything. Why the sun rises, and so forth. It was convenient for them. If you whammy back to that time and said what we believe, they would think idiots of us. I believe the same holds true today. If people came from the year 3000 to visit us and told us how the universe "actually works", we would think idiots of them. This may be man's biggest flaw, the inability to let go of an idea or to explore other paths. It's easier to blindly accept we are right than to accept we may be wrong. So for what is energy? I believe it is an abstract idea that is convenient for our time on how we perceive the world. I also believe there is a greater truth that we have not found yet. So I will accept this explanation of energy as a "tool" for what we require energy to be, but I will also be ready to throw this idea out the window when a "better" idea comes.

    Since the concepts of space and time came into existence at the moment of the Big Bang, then all energy must have originated then as well. There is no "before" the Big Bang and due to energy conservation, the energy can't have been created at any time after the Big Bang. Ergo it all came from the creation of the Universe itself as we understand it.

    Reminder, we cannot depend or accept theory for what it is, I would say it just a guidance for us. But we should figure ourselves whether it is true and how will you debate your answer and how will you prove you are right. Let’s say the quadratic formula, do you just accept for what the school teaches or being told or you will go deeper in your own hands how it began and understand how it created in the first place.

    6:45 NO! Higgs bosons are NOT the cause of mass! 1) Almost all of the mass in an atom is mass that comes from their energy via E=mc², not from the higgs field. The protons and neutrons get their mass from the energy stored in the quarks (rough description, not 100% true, but that's the gist of it). Only the electrons in your body get their mass from the higgs field. 2) The origin of mass for some particles (such as, like I just mentioned, electrons) comes from the higgs *field* - not from Higgs bosons. The bosons were discovered quite recently, which then confirmed the existance of the Higgs field. The bosons aren't the things that give other particles mass. Edit: This video explains this really well (it's exactly about this same topic): Your Mass is NOT From the Higgs Boson

    1. I think therefore I AM. Something exists. 2. Something cannot come from nothing. 3. There is something. 4. Since there is something and something cannot come from nothing, nothing never existed, if it did then there still would be nothing. (i) something comes something, (ii) from nothing comes nothing. Therefore since existence is, the (ii) premise must be true. 5. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Therefore, it could have no beginning, if it did it would imply it was created. 6. Energy must always have existed. 7. Energy is eternal. 8. Everything is energy. 9. Living thing arise from energy which is evident, therefore life has a chance of arising from energy. 10. If it did once, then in an infinite world, it can do infinite times so it has done infinite times, is doing and will do infinite times. ( Also research "Eternal Return" and "Cyclic Model theory of the Universe" ) ( NOTE : I am not saying I am completely right, just alternate theory rather than the Big Bang and I am not implying it's equal or superior to it, just inferior but something to hypothesize, that's because we don't know the absolute truth, therefore hypothesizing is all we can do. )

    Kudos to you for talking about Emmy Noether. Spoilers: at the cosmological scale, energy is not conserved. Light redshifts due to the accelerated expansion of the Universe and looses energy by the time it reaches other galaxies. Without knowledge of Dark Energy we simply don't know if energy is conserved overall, and in fact energy conservation is dubious in GR itself, where symmetries are space-time-dependent. Just sayin'.

  • @DrMartinArcher

    @DrMartinArcher

    You're entirely right, General Relativity allows for energy to not be conserved over cosmological scales due to curved space-times. But GR says that locally we can always treat space-time as a tangent plane and that's why energy is conserved on our more familiar smaller scales. Whether energy is conserved across the entire Universe is really unknown! A complex but interesting point.

But not using energy to do so. Thats the most I could extrapolate from your point.

    So in a very vague way of expressing what you're basically saying everything is the way it is because thats the way it is. They symmetry seems expressed as a closed loop answer to the question in that there is no other way things could be because that's the way they are and.always have been and would be if it all begun again.

  • @DrMartinArcher

    @DrMartinArcher

    Not really, you can do a thought experiment imagining Universes with different symmetries and then via Noether's theorem work out what the consequences would be. For instance, a 1-dimensional Universe could have no concept of angular momentum but momentum could exist as long as translation was a symmetry. Basically, the argument isn't circular and it's a bit like the anthropic principle.

Ohk for example :- how many numbers are there? Infinite. What is 1 + infinte? Not possible. What is next integer infinte? Undefined? Hah our brain has a limit. We can't think beyond a limit. Our past theories get proved wrong and new theory comes. How can our brain understand what and god is? But god show signs. Yes he show. There r plenty of more questions. There r plent of religious books. Find the book which is pure and the book which u can get in pure form. Check the book not the follower of that religion. There blackships on the religions. And don't get misinterpreted of that books by others. Ohk this is just starting. *"Every soul will taste death"*

( Also research "Eternal Return" and "Cyclic Model theory of the Universe" ) ( NOTE : I am not saying I am completely right, just alternate theory rather than the Big Bang and I am not implying it's equal or superior to it, just inferior but something to hypothesize, that's because we don't know the absolute truth, therefore hypothesizing is all we can do. )

    All of these are natural processes (including big bang) but if you keep on going backwards, everything should come from a single point and God created the point. God is the owner of nature. No matter what science keeps on proving,the origin will remain mystery. The only phenomenon that has no beginning and end is God(The creator of the big bang,the creator of nature)

    JohnVrSo No, particlelight is right. This guy did not explain much of anything really. He says energy cannot be created and yet was somehow created during the big bang but doesn't explain how. If energy can't be created then how could the big bang have created? He completely contradicts himself without explaining how it's possible.

  • @naaj100

  • @LumieX

    @LumieX

    JohnVrSo If he can't explain it then he shouldn't be proclaiming it as truth. He clearly states "it must have originated with the beginning of time itself, the big bang". So he's basically saying that energy began to exist which means it was created which is a clear contradiction to the Law of Conservation of Energy. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. He makes an extraordinary claim and gives literally no evidence to support it. Hardly science if you ask me.

  • @VJsubstanceJ

    LumieX The last point is basically stating that we've been looking at it the wrong way. What we perceive as energy is not a force acting on an object, but the only possible way an object can behave. In other words, energy is not an "activity" or "operation" at all. It's just the opposite, a constraint, given by a universe that is perfectly symmetrical over time.

    This video is amazing (save the Aristotle flub). To all you posters that don't get it yet.: Martin Archer is telling you directly what energy is and where it came from. The symmetry explanation is as good as it gets in a short video in an everyday sort of way- The definition of energy is often described as the "Capacity to do work". This description is precise yet boring for all that are looking for a 15 second Pop answer. Martin Archer is trying HARD to take you beyond the dry definition of energy that I just quoted. He is bold in his presentation because it requires maths, yet Martin is not underestimating YOUR intelligence by "dumbing it down". Follow him.

    Main Frame In your original post "Since it is pretty certain that energy didnt start with the big bang," I believe you are committing the logical fallacy of begging the question. As Martin so graciously tried to explain to you, your question is invalid and shows a lack of understanding of the theory. The concept of "before" requires time to exist. The big bang theory rests on the premise that time itself is finite. If you have an alternate theory, have a go at it, but that's not what we're talking about here. Now stop being a prick to people who are trying to help you, it's shameful.

    There are three answers in the video, depending on your interpretation of the question. Why the Big Bang happened and why our Universe exists at all is a whole other question to which we don't really know the answer.

    Here people, I'm a philosopher, I'll explain this subject, BEHOlD! lol. For the people here that say he didn't explain anything, they're right, and neither did that Mathematician lady, the problem is we're applying mundane logic to the depths of forever, which it's not a matter of, instead, it's a matter of acceptance, to accept eternal-ness, therefore entropy maybe or should not be what we think it is, also, to accept that there will never be an answer to this question other then accept eternal-ness. Everything that every exist has always existed, right? To think otherwise just doesn't make sense, at least not based on the way things are. In addition to that if eternal-ness is real, then possibility are endless. This is why I believe in a God and in Pantheism and I believe that God believes in Pantheism. I really don't think there no room for Atheism, instead the best Atheist can do is take the word God and call it intelligent force, however, that intelligent force governs the Universe, so, there is Governance, yet, like I said possibility are endless, and within the Universe exist procreation, evolution or shape shifting, then there's dark matter, yeah, the Universe is alive. I could say more, but that should be good enough.

    BTW. There is more current physical evidence for an intelligent universe than a universe that "banged" into existence from nothing. That whole idea is ridiculous. If all matter/energy existed in time and must be conserved, then it could have never been less than what it is or will be in a time construct. The Creationist are probable on a better path than the so-called scientific establishment. You have to respect those brave pioneering scientists who use the scientific method and stand by their results, despite tremendous social pressure from the academic community to conform.
