    As someone who has spent so much time by myself for reasons like this, I've come up with so many ideas and play things out in my head all the time. I do suffer from depression and anxiety, but after years of using that spare time to sit there and just think, I actually do feel a better understanding of myself, others, how others see me, and the world around me, without the act of judging anyone or anything instantly. But it seems anytime I get the motivation to push myself, life pushes me back, so idk but maybe someday, when things don't jump in the way the second I decide to take a step forward, I'll get the chance to spread my wings.

    Was always a quiet kid in school but I remember people asking me how I was able to just get lost in thought or "zone out" in any situation that was normally.... Boring. I've never know. I just don't mind boredom. If I'm bored and can't do anything I sit quietly and stare off into the distance and let myself get lost in thought. Sometimes it's as though I don't exist. I can turn a 4 hour wait into 10 minutes of what could be called meditation. Just thinking and learning from your own mind.

    I think boredom stems from the fact that most of us are not in the"wild" anymore, and have our basic needs easily fulfilled, if you live in a developed country, you're most likely in a house, sheltered from elements, and when you get hungry or thirsty, all you have to do it make your way to the kitchen and help yourself. Ergo you don't have the stress of needing to stay alive, so you can focus on other more superfluous things, like art, entertainment and what not, and that's where boredom comes in, sitting on your sofa in your living room with a drink in your hand and a bowl of crisps, and nothing to do.

  • @Nihilianth

    @Nihilianth

    That's not really true. Being "in the wild" doesnt require you to always have to be doing something in order to survive. As a matter of fact, the more primitive a society, the LESS an individual has to do in any given day. In fact, the idea that primitive man always had to be doing something in order to survive, directly contradicts what Michael was saying about how "boredom" evolved to begin with.: Not just for mere surivival, but to thrive.

    In my mind boredom has always been synonymous with depression; boredom is the sensation caused by the realization that your life is meaningless and you have no proper task that grants a feeling of fulfillment. Particularly in the case of having little to no romantic and/or social life, leaving you to your own devices, which often include monotony: playing a video game you've already beaten, listening to music you've already heard, falling into other addictive patterns that provide some measure of temporary entertainment to distract you from the soul-crushing reality of a universe within which nothing you do truly matters. Boredom is the disease of the intelligent, because as they say, ignorance truly is bliss.

    I've recently come to think that dreams are generated by the brain going through thoughts as it usually does, but without any specific (or easily understandable) purpose, thus doing it almost in a random way. Also, when you're asleep, you're still able to catch stimuli, but since not all of your senses are at work, and some of them aren't even at their full potential, what we see and feel in the dream is completely different from what's actually going on. It even happens when you're close to falling asleep, or when you just woke up. Your mind is sluggish, slow, clumsy. Someone might tell you something but you're just not in the right mindset, and misunderstand the situation completely.

    3:10 Yeah, I definitely feel like boredom usually ends up in positive things, because when bored, I start thinking about doing (productive, somewhat fructiferous) stuff that I would definitely refuse doing if occupied. It's like, now that you have lots of spare time to fill, you start thinking about things that you wished you had time for when you didn't have that much spare time. Of course, boredom also allows you to calmly meditate about yourself and things happening in your life. So, yeah, having a healthy dose of boredom is always a good thing!!

  • @tomtrigger

    @tomtrigger

    10 жыл бұрын

    Bergson wrote an essay about laughter that addresses "getting hurt". You should read the first few chapters. I don't remember much, mind: Let's take Wily Coyote as an example (quite fitting, actually). We laugh at the coyote because he is a desperate fanatic (as in someone who keeps perpetuating his effort even having forgotten his aim) and always gets hurt and fails in his objective. His skinny and colourless appearance and bloodshot eyes represent the fact that he is a failure. The idea of the superiority theory is that we feel joy because we perceive ourselves to be superior to the Coyote. An important detail in the theory is that it is only possible when emotional involvement is suspended. We can only laugh at a character if we somehow overcome our sympathy for it and begin to see the mechanic nature of his behaviour. A behaviour which, as Pirandello also said, is the "contrary" of what it should have been. We laugh at the contrast between what happened and what should have happened (same reason we laugh at video game bugs btw) because laughter is a corrective phenomenon born to humiliate the character and make it behave as it should. There's more, but it's too long to write down, read the essay. Hope this helps.
