With the way stealth checks work in DnD, there are quite a few valid reasons for a rogue being away from the group. Like when you need to scout ahead but don't want the clunky paladin in his clanking plate armor alerting everyone in a 10 mile radius. And some rogue subclasses like assassin are heavily dependent on staying undetected and surprising enemies, which further encourages the rogue to stay away from less stealthy party members.

one of the things I try to do, as a minimum, is it the group splits up in any way, I try to internally determine "how long is this taking in game?" and rotate between the different groups. rogue went off to start slaughtering the entire village? well, that's probably gonna take at least half an hour to find everyone... so while that happens, rest of party, what are you doing? walking towards the village for an hour? uh huh... ok, so rogue, you've finished slaughtering the village, what's next? It adds a bit more legwork in trying to decide on the fly "how long is what they said going to take?" but it prevents any one person from being the only one playing for long, and can lead to interesting moments where one thing might interact naturally with other things.

I was in one Pathfinder game where my barbarian sort of ended up in the main character role but it was completely incidental and the whole party was down for it. Basically I'd arrived late to a session that I didn't think I would make it to at all. Party was having a boss fight against an evil ice mage and his magically enhanced talking goat minion. When I arrived two party members were downed the rogue was in the corner getting the shit beaten out of them by the goat and our warlock was blinded and stuck to a wall by an icicle not mortally wounded but unable to move. Basically it was just me and the very first thing I did on the first turn was roll a fat crit on the goat. My character was a titan mauler and so used weapons one size category larger than normal. After splattering the goat I proceeded to throw every weapon available at the evil flying wizard (throw anything feat ftw). After doing some damage he feld out a window and down toward the courtyard, we'd found some potions of featherfall in the last session so I jumped out after him. Now in the courtyard and low on things to throw, my characters takes some hits before finding the body of the wizard's mistress (whom I'd killed in the previous session by catching the spear she threw at me and throwing it back) and proceeded to kill him with it as well. I rolled very well throughout this though I don't doubt there was a bit of fudging on the DM's part to avoid a tpk. After that point one of my party members suggested and the rest including the DM agreed with my character being ahead of the level curve of the rest of the party. That whole campaign was a very fun time.

Playing it like that gives the party a huge advantage while you don't end up on to many solo adventures while the rest of the party is bored. I have the concept for a rogue whose wife was killed by a noble and he lurks in the corner of a bar... Knitting. He's taken up knitting because the priests he's getting therapy from says it helps to keep himself busy instead of letting his mind dwell on dark thoughts. He's even made up with the noble, it turns out he's accepted his sentence for murder and has been also seeking penance. Now he wants to get out and start helping the world, but only if he can separate the violence of adventuring from his feelings so he doesn't end up replacing his past life with a future of death. Those few hours he spent lurking away from the party? He was spending the evening volunteering at a soup kitchen. He may be suffering, but he knows others don't have it any better. His past is dark and traumatic, but he's open about it because that's the only way to heal.

Hmm, that's difficult. Part of the fun of having a character is watching them grow (not always positively!), and go through an arc. Your idea very much seems like a completed character. That could still work, however, if they take a backseat and act more as a mentor figure to other party members. If being more of a background character sounds like something you'd enjoy? Conflict drives narrative, so if there's little conflict in his own narrative, that's a rather stagnant character. It's hard to make their backgrounds relevant in an engaging way. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion this character concept exists merely to subvert the expectation that a rogue must be an edge-lord. While that's not a bad thing in and of itself, remember to keep them interesting!

@@meris8486 Yeah, if I were playing this character I would probably cut the backstory off after the first 2-3 sentences. His parents were killed, but he doesn't want to go down the dark path, even though it seems so much easier than being a good person. Over the course of the campaign, he would struggle with that conflict, with the bad part of him revealing itself at times. He would seek out the noble at some point to gain some sense of closure, only to find out that he's already paying for his crimes (or maybe he's dead, or got off scot-free). Over time, he would be able to put his trauma behind him and be a good person, being able to balance his violent tendencies without becoming a full-on criminal/psychopath. Or maybe he goes the other way, fully indulging the evil and becoming the same thing that killed his parents

Maybe the Noble hired killers that were getting on his good side to try and squeeze him for his riches. Putting bad thoughts and attitudes in his head and getting him to do seedy things until he got ur wife killed for X reason. So now you seek revenge against the true killers. The madmen that did something horrific just for some gold and are "unsaveable". Gives your DM a mini-villain to throw in that could be working with BBEG too.

For all my games I've told my players that if someone goes rogue (away on their own for an extended period) or the party votes their character out for lack of cooperation as the characters just dont like them for whatever reason, then they will need to roll a new one that fits the party dynamic better if they can't adapt

Simply be straight up with her. Tell her that she needs to be a cooperative player or at least be destructive in a way that isn't actively ruining the experience for others. The game is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for EVERYONE. A little mischief here and there is actually kind of fun, puts players in interesting situations causes dramatic conflict etc. but being a murder hobo isn't fun unless you're running a campaign where everyone is being chaotic. Another thing you can do story wise is make sure her character has an agreed upon personal goal/arc to complete that necessitates some level of co-operation e.g. she's been kicked out of her homeland for some mistake and the only way to prove herself is to earn some meddle of honor. If your characters attention isn't kept focused they'll start looking for things to do.

Basically set up a small arc that punishes her in game for acting poorly and basically tricks her into playing a better or more cooperative person. Just one thing after the other failing or hurting her or causing problems for her exclusively. Traps, hidden enemies, npc that are perfect counters for her, Situations that she doesn't have the abilities to address. Then have the group have comparably easy obstacles that they can complete together and it should hopefully force her to start playing differently. Otherwise just make her character get killed, kidnapped, etc.

But have you had your rogue exit a fight in stealth, loot the entire room, replace the final loot with common cups and utensils from his bag of holding, re-enter the fight to assasinate the boss. Oh yeah, and no one at the table knew for years.

I would play my character like kuroko, always following the party and unintentionally disappearing from the groups perception and I don't notice until they start looking for me. Standing quietly by the group the whole time. All I want is friends, people who at least start looking for me. And I could make it a family trait that everyone from my family can do this as far as I've been told because no one knows for sure the size of the family, we are always trying to find each other.

Ergo, you have to TRY to make noise and be noticed and you sometimes just forget to do so... and bam, no one notices you any more. I'd probably just randomly do stealth checks against their passive perception to make it a dice roll dynamic.

I play in a campaign where we had a Rogue like this. While the rest of the group was trying to work together even if our characters didnt see eye to eye on everything he always went off and did his own stuff which ultimately lead us into heaps of trouble. Now I dont have a problem with players doing their own thing from time to time seperate from the party but with him it was just too much. One time we just wanted to go from a tavern to the harbor of the city to get a get-away-ship (we were being prosecuted for things the rogue did previously). We rolled stealth checks and moved silently towards the harbor avoiding guards and distractions and that would have been it but the rogue had to split off from the group and go on an impromtu heist that took almost 2 hours in realtime while the rest of us were just watching since our characters didnt know what he was doing and didnt want to risk going back into the city. The player eventually left the group but in-game his character is responsible for the end of the world we have to avoid now.

My rogue plays EXACTLY like this, like the similarities are eerie. He killed the major villain of an arc alone, before that part of the story even started, rerouting the entire campaign. He goes off to his own little things in the downtime to mess with the plot in the background, which caused multiple major shifts in the direction. He also started DMing shortly after all this - and with that, he broke the forever DM curse on me.

I kinda play like that, because my DM likes to kinda railroad a little bit, like for example one time he sent 3 really tough enemies at me, and I beat all of them but then one of them without using spells just phased through a glass door and when my non hand to hand combat druid character, got lucky and trounced them anyways by being a spiteful little bitch with a very powerful laser pointer, they reached through my body and magically negated my immunity to electricity, so they could capture me, and so I'll sometimes willingly make a decision in spite of what I know their planning, or make up some bullshit and insist it's true, to see if I can out play his railroading like one example is the time he wanted me to have a dilemma by making god threaten me, and my cocky ass called god on his bullshit and killed him, which I was needless to say NOT supposed to do, and another time was when he had a storyline planned to make me secret royalty with Amniesa and no idea it was true, but I made my character insist at every opportunity based on no evidence other than hair color that they were long lost royalty

So true story about my last campaign... I made a very social focused rogue with expertise in persuasion who was a charlatan, and we had plenty of downtime in our campaign so I was able to carouse all types of social classes during our adventures. At about 6th level we killed a young dragon. Our ranger was able to salvage enough of its scales to make us a set of armor with it, and someone on the ship we were traveling with was skilled enough to make said armor while we were still traveling from a distant island back to the mainland. Anyways, so here I am now at 7th level, with specifically members of trading guilds who owe me favors, now just using my own time to try and sell this item at increased value to one of these caroused friends of mine. I end up getting one to basically play the middle man for me to sell it to someone who did have the gold and made a solid 100k at like, 7th level. This started a domino effect of me expanding my network of hirelings (that I already had loosely invested into at like 2nd level) that like increased my work force by like 5 fold, and by the time we were 9th level and putting down the BBEG, I'm now capitalizing on all the damage that had been done to multiple villages and cities. Ended up in the nation's capital (homebrew continent) so was able to carouse some nobles to buy some of their land and properties that had been destroyed during the war, and then we had a year time skip to connect that chapter of our story to the second chapter (at this point we've been playing like, once or twice a month for a little over a year now). By the time that year had passed, my rogue was the Bruce Wayne of that country. That whole snowballing currency thing mentioned in this video is VERY real, lol. After you buy a few houses and businesses, you basically just have crazy financial gains. One village was completely destroyed in the war, I basically rebuilt it to model Baldur's Gate since it was located in almost the exact center of the map with major roads passing near it and several rivers that split to the north east and west of the nation. So just built walls around it and abused some hirelings with what was basically a rug pull, and by the end of that year, the new city probably rivaled the capital as far as how much money it made in taxes, trade and rent.

In my game of monopoly? Lol, not at all. We had enough to make two suits of the black scale armor, I took one, another took the other. We were the only ones in the party even able to wear it (I was a fighter multi class) so they didn’t really care. I just had my eyes on “purple armor, this will sell for a ton” My shenanigans was all my own thing. I made it my downtime. I didn’t make it anything that would distract gameplay at the table. So no. They had no clue I was building a financial empire the entire time, leaving shadow marks and map coordinates for my people after we (the party) would clear out certain ideal locations, so that they could come in after us, clear the bodies out, refurbish the location, and make it another stronghold of ours for business/trade routes.

See I'm in a similar position but in reverse, I was the forever DM of my last group, and then I joined a new group, and became all powerful by complete accident, basically they were using a homebrew system that I had no familiarity with, cuz they know I'm the type of person who likes to look at stats and play the numbers game. And it was specifically designed around preventing me from doing exactly that. And I was just gonna do a chemistry dude. And they told me it wasn't strong enough and I'd be weaker than all the other players, and so I can also just grow plants and make modifications to my robot arm. And I most recently called actual gods bluff and beat him by myself through a series of events that I tried very very hard to resist. And now everyone is mad at me like it's my fault God outright came and threatened to kill my character and another player character. And I beat him. Like what was I supposed to do? Die? Instead I didn't diversify at all I just put all my points into a single skill until every single roll was a critical success and I literally couldn't be hit by anything
