    +AlmightyCollage Ralph ellison, the man who wrote the 'invisible man' by your logic technically is the one perfect artist then. However, that was his only piece so there's technically not that much depth to him in the long run. So as a result, it can't be perfect path right? sure a hero but a brief one.

    Fun fact: When Reservoir Dogs came out, the press fell in love with Tarantino and said he'd be the next huge thing. The miracle isn't that his talent was recognized so early, but that he lived up to the hype.

I'm not fanboying, I genuinely don't enjoy say Jackie Brown or Death Proof but I'm smart enough to know it's because those movies aren't for me (or that I'm just not into those types yet) and not because they're bad movies. You're a fucking haterboy who hates on shit just because it's famous. Quentin Tarantino has an extremely solid run and is an amazing director. His last three movies are even my favorite from him. But hey fine with me if you wanna hate, I'm not the one missing out on greatness.

    +Sam Huddy and Tarantion suffered a hit or miss with H8ful because of that. I didnt see the film, but a run time of 3h 7min means that that film shouldve been cut. Ive seen long westerns before, but the way it was marketed as a comedy/drama with a western influence backfired with that long run time, and the same character set ups as in Reservoir Dogs. Hell they all have code names, with personalities of not liking each other, and are stuck in one place as each of their own personal stories are told from one perspective. It's the same trend with Inglorious Bastards a film I liked, but cant go back to watch because there's nothing different from a second viewing. Django Unchained deserved praised because of the controversy as well as being slightly different from Jackie Brown.

  • @SnowBlind853
    @SnowBlind8538 жыл бұрын

    Here's another factor I don't think you covered: Film is a massively collaborative project, just because a movie is bad doesn't necessarily reflect entirely on the director. The Director has their name attached to the movie but they can't do it alone, without great story boarders, editors, producers, actors, etc, the movie can start off as a great vision and end up being underwhelming. So just like in the example of starwars, a great movie is seldom made with just two hands at the wheel. Just my 2 cents.

    George Lucas was never a "Good director". He is however, no doubt a brilliant world builder, and one of the best marketers of all time. It is no coincidence that his best stuff is the stuff that he has the least to do with, and any time he is allowed to be more hands-on it turns to shit.

    This is true. He had something like a psychological breakdown in the first Star Wars and was essentially unable to do the full job because of the horrifying stress. The fact that so many other eyes were on the original series is a key reason, if not THE key reason, that it turned out so wonderfully. The RedLetterMedia reviews of the prequels are fantastic in pointing all this out.

    One could argue age is a factor. But then you got directors like George Miller (71) and Clint Eastwood (86) still dishing out great work. One of the most odd things that is the most unpredictable and major factors in a number of films ins TIMING. Too early, and a film could go over an audiences head (Blade Runner) too late, and it becomes a carbon copy of a tired story (Batman v Superman)

  • @longliverocknroll5

    While Eastwood did make a fair number of good films in the last 20 years (Sully, Gran Torino, Letter from Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby, and Mystic River) he's also made an equal amount of shit (Blood Work, True Crime, J. Edgar, Hereafter, Jersey Boys and American Sniper's and 15:17 to Paris' god-awful glorification and propaganda) as well as just mediocre stuff (Invictus, Changeling, and Flags of Our Fathers). The constant criticism of Eastwood is also that his stories are minimalistic and one-dimensional or just boring.

    I wouldn't say American sniper is terrible. It's definitely an america fuck yeah movie, but much better than most the other films based off stories coming from the war on terror. I'd say it belongs in the mediocre category. Also while flags of our fathers is somewhat mediocre i'd say that's only because of all the other high quality WW2 movies, but when viewed with letters from Iwo Jima as one film It can be used to give great perspective to someone who knows next to nothing about ww2, the pacific, and the two countries depicted in the films. Though I would agree in your assessment that Old Clint can be hit or miss with his films.

    gutz1981 I don't think Batman V Superman had a problem with the timing of its release, or at least it wasn't released too late. It just tried to do too many things at once instead of focusing on the titular conflict. It had to tease Wonderwoman before her solo movie, tease the upcoming Justice League and its heroes, introduce several villains (of which Doomsday was only a vessel to tease WW pretty much), have a great fight between the titular heroes, have darkish commentary on how one should judge a being as strong as Superman just doing what he thinks is right on a global scale, and even have an important character death only after 2 movies down in the DC cinematic universe. Had it waited for WW solo movie to come first and dropped Doomsday (and immediately-related plot points) onto a sequel entirely, it might have had time to show all of the other mentioned stuff in a manner that made a great movie. But they wanted to try to catch up to the MCU in one movie instead.

I mean you have a monsterverse with godzilla and king kong they followed the rule marvel established and worked out very well why not just do that with dc characters , they are arguably more famous than marvel but they did not know what to do thankfully they realized their mistake and is trying to make things correct Wonder woman , Aquaman, Shazam all established the characters very well than the Justice league movie which was directed by Joss weadon not Zack snyder , and also he directed R rated movies not just pg-13 movies and Watchmen is his masterpiece.

    The only reason Star Wars was successful as it was is because Lawrence Kasden and Lucas's ex-wife edited the scripts a ton- both admitted Georges original draft was "crap". Kasden didn't do return of the Jedi, which wasn't as good as the others, including Lucas replacing the wookie planet with ewoks. The reason the prequels were terrible is because Lucas had no one holding him back- he is the guy who did Howard the Duck after all.

    Where does Don Bluth fit in these categories? His animated movies from 1982 to 1989 were really good films, in fact two of them trumped Disney at the box office in 1986 and in 1988. But starting with Rock-a-doodle in the 90's something went wrong. However, Don Bluth does have the potential to make a comeback with the new Dragon's Lair movie that was announced via Channel Awesome recently.

    +Bravo Kilo I remember watching the Visit and thinking it was pretty terrible. Looking back on it now, I still think it was bad, but at least the premise was...kinda unique I guess? It's something I hadn't really heard of before. But then again, everyone's expectations were probably pretty low due to his last movies, and anything thats a mild improvement over those is probably gonna be well praised. I didn't like how it relied on gross old people tropes though, I thought that was just...disgusting. While that was the point of the movie to be gross on purpose, that still doesn't mean it was hard to watch. One of my criticisms of it though is that it belongs in 2008. It was made 7 years too late to jump onto the shaky cam era, along with the whole white boy rapping thing. Now a days those things just feel dated.

    There are also those directors whose films don't start off well with audiences and critics, but get better with time. Two examples are Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. Most of their films, even famous ones like Vertigo and 2001 were critical and commercial failures when they were released even though nowadays people consider them masterpieces. I can only speculate that it was because no one really knew what to think of them at the time; they were very open ended and took a lot of weird turns that weren't in many other films at the time. They changed the way we saw films, and when it comes to changes in cinema, there's always gonna be mixed reactions among people. To me, a good director is one that can just make a decent movie every now and then, but a great director can challenge that preconception; what does make a good film good and a bad film bad?

    One of the things that could have been mentioned is an idea in writing called, "Killing your babies." Sometimes when you have an idea, you feel it is massively amazing, so profound and brilliant, it has to be in there. You have to look out for that because thats a red flag its a BAD idea. Think of your favorite Teddy Bear, you would remember the good times you had, the amount of effort that went in, the sad nights it got you through and hard times of your life. Now imagine a new person saw it for the first time, he/she would see a dingy old bear, with all its fluff smashed out, and a button eye. This is an important part of a second opinion, sometimes you make a scene that feels so great, and you are so inspired, but it does not fit in. It is hard to see bad ideas, especially when you are invested in them, which is why its good to have a second opinion.

    ***** ...Okay, I want to know. What would you say if I told you that 2001 was boring, confusing, was nothing like the book and is ridiculously overrated and praised by critics? Would you attack me? Would you rush to defend 2001? Or would you let me just have my opinion and leave me alone? Most likely one of the first two. You see, every time I talk about 2001 in a negative way hordes of Kubrick fans rush to silence me. Now if I recall correctly, some idiot critic claimed that 2001 brought mankind to another level of evolution. If that isn't over praising I don't know what is.

    Since when is sexually abusing children 'an embarrassing personal life'? Finding out someone is a furry, or a foot fetishist, is an 'embarrassing personal life'. Being accused of sexually abusing children is on an entirely different level. Maybe child sexual abuse wouldn't be such a rampant problem in the industry (as reported by actors like Elijah Wood and Corey Feldman) if people would actually at least say out loud what these people are doing. They're not embarrassing themselves. They're being accused of sexually abusing children.

    i wouldn't say he's gone bad, i'd say that he peaked at such high there was nowhere to go but down and films like the hobbit trilogy and king kong i'd say were partially viewed the way they were because they were being measured against lord of the rings not just as films. there are other reasons though. king kong was a remake so it's a bit hard to really care that much especially when its a remake of a film that was a revolutionary milestone and set cinema in the direction it went in, the same story even if it does have great special effects isn't really going to become a duplicate milestone. the hobbit trilogy had several things working against it. jackson didn't want to do it at first and took over from del toro and there was alot of improvising as opposed to lord of the rings when jackson and his crew had a massive greatly detailed vision that was worked at for years before filming. jackson also misjudged fan expectations or maybe succumbed to hollywood marketing. the constant complaint you hear is that it was 3 films. it seems ppl didn't want to see this, they just wanted to see a single film faithful adaptation. the hobbit also suffered the disadvantage of being released after lord of the rings. this wasn't jackson's fault, but as a result this means it was in some ways doomed to not do as well as it would have if it had come out first. i base this on the fact that its hard to care about what's happening in this smaller scale story when you've already seen the big story. pixar used to put animated shorts after their films as an extra until they realised the proper way to do it was to show the short before the main feature. jackson tried to compensate this in all honesty by making it feel big and epic, but this actually made things worse because the scope wasn't the point, it was still a prequel and it still wasn't the main story. how much can you honestly be invested in the battle of 5 armies when you already know everything that's going to happen afterwards, which characters will survive and ultimately how this story is going to end? as opposed to return of the king when the climax held the responsibility of having the entire world we've gotten to see and the future of all these characters we've spent so much time in at stake. now personally i like the hobbit films, but they don't come within an inch of the quality of lord of the rings and i can see why lots of ppl wouldn't like them. the desolation of smaug is especially annoying to sit through at times, but i quite like the battle of 5 armies with the exception of the running time. anyway conclusion of this long essay, peter jackson hasn't gone bad, he might do, but i haven't seen cause to think he's has at the moment. we'll just have to see what he does next

    When did the coen brothers make a long line of bad films? You mean 2? With intolerable cruelty and The Ladykillers. I admit I made a similar mistake in my own review of The Ladykillers, saying kind of the opposite, but I'm not entirely sure 2 bad films out of a plethora of great ones can be called a long line of bad movies.

  • @outsidelookinginprod

    @outsidelookinginprod

    +Big Brother Gaming That really annoyed me. I am a fan of the Coen Brothers and this line was an over exaggeration, but that is not out of character for Doug Walker. I even liked Intolerable Cruelty and only considered The Ladykillers a true disappointment (though I also found Burn After Reading to be a small letdown). I enjoyed Intolerable Cruelty for two reasons: George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones' chemistry and the way the movie kept one-upping itself with each ridiculous twist in the third act. It goes from a traditional romantic comedy to a crazy screwball, Looney Tunes type adventure, and the final scene where the lawyers summed up the final act was hilarious. But, that's just my opinion.

  • @MrLaxdude89

    outsidelookinginprod I really have to agree with just about all of that. I found Intolerable Cruelty to be way better than The Ladykillers, and yeah I myself wasn't the biggest fan of Burn After Reading (But I acknowledge what makes it so great, I guess it's just not for me) I think Intolerable Cruelty definitely had a lot to like about it, and by no means do I regret watching it (Well, since they're some of my favorite directors, it's pretty much a requirement to see every film of there's so yeah)

  • @outsidelookinginprod

    @outsidelookinginprod

    ***** I actually just watched Intolerable Cruelty on Netflix after writing my comment and laughed throughout. The reason I enjoy it is because it is so clearly a Coen Brothers' version of a romantic comedy. It shows how they managed to create a mainstream product without compromising who they are as filmmakers. Instead of falling victim to all the conventions that are expected of romcoms, the Coens injected their dark sense of humor, while subverting the recognizable tropes, and I love that about this film. The only time I am ever disappointed by the Coen Brothers is when they indulge too much in excess, and that is what The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading felt like to me. They just feel gratuitous at points, and could have been reigned back. I have no problem with vulgar content if it suits the story, but that just didn't feel like the case in both of those movies.

  • @MrLaxdude89

    @MrLaxdude89

    8 жыл бұрын

    outsidelookinginprod For me, The Ladykillers was just filled to the brim with things that are below them, like overly predictable characters, plot lines, and jokes so bad at times that you'd swear Tyler Perry wrote that. The movie kind of became a reference to when movie remakes don't work. But then they made True Grit, which proved that they can actually work significantly well when done correctly.

  • @outsidelookinginprod

    @outsidelookinginprod

    8 жыл бұрын

    Agreed, and that's what I mean by "indulging in excess." Those movies feel like the worse of them turned up to 11, like the Coen brothers unchained. They are "kitchen sink" type movies, with every thing thrown in to them without any real reason, so the jokes fall flat and a lot of the vulgarity feels forced. I think the Coen brothers' dark humor works best when contrasted with the mundane. Fargo had the juxtaposition of violence and friendliness, The Big Lebowski had a laid-back stoner who would rather just bowl thrown into action, Raising Arizona had over the top comedy but at it's core was just about a couple who wanted a child, and Intolerable Cruelty intentionally subverted romcom tropes. There was no emotional core to The Ladykillers or Burn After Reading and it lacked characters that are worth the investment, so the humor didn't feel motivated. It just felt like a series of madcap scenarios tied together.

    4:16 "But think about it, if you were a writer or director in the same situation, would that possibly happen to you too?" And that's why I'm here, learning what I can so I don't go down the same road. A lot of eye-opening info here, especially for me, seeing as I'm working towards a career as an animation writer/director. The thing that stood out the most as important for me is when you mentioned that while certain directors of fame were producing the films that made them famous, they got advice. Thank you :)

    +RDog4484 I couldn't help but think the same thing when Doug listed it as one of Robert Zemeckis', "misses." And imo Robert Zemeckis shouldn't have been listed as one of the hit or miss directors. Not all of his movies are great and a good chunk of them are mediocre at best, but he's not the kind of director who makes movies that are usually hit or miss nor does he have many movies that were huge failures. The only two movies that come to mind are What Lies Beneath and Death Becomes Her. Most of the other Robert directed movies were either meh, good, or the Forrest Gump, Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Flight and The Walk type movies.

    +Anteye I don't get why Critic relates that line to the prequels either. Yeah it's cheesy, but it's snappy and comes from that specific character's traits. That's more than can be said about the dialogue in the prequels. You know, I actually watched a New Hope last night and while I'm sure it was improved in editing, it still had more heart and energy than the prequels ever did. The characters bicker and demonstrate how they are different from one another. Their conflicting personalities set up some great jokes. Like when Han fucks with Luke when he figures out he's got the hots for Leia. The script may have been a bit meandering before the editors focused the film, but there's a beating heart in A New Hope that just wasn't in the prequels. It's not just story and characters that Lucas failed to recreate in the prequels, he seemingly forgot basic blocking and scene construction. It's honestly baffling how the guy went from THX, American Graffiti and Star Wars to where he is today. It's like he just forgot how to make a motion picture.

    +Penny Lane This is a fault with Herbert George Wells too. The entire book tells us nothing about the narrator who is presumably an avatar for Wells himself other than the fact that he is a scientist who knows a thing or two about physics and has presumably been to medical school. All of it is told in the first person, and we never learn his name or anything about his upbringing or much about his family. The whole story is the first person narrator being lucky enough, swift enough and stealthy enough to survive while making scientific acknowledgements the entire time. Just recording events as they happen, but telling us little to nothing about anybody he meets. The movies, both 1953 and 2005 give our hero a background, a family, a past, even a name.

    +Deebo Molina People have been saying this since Citizen Kane was released. But we've seen much bigger directors than Welles since. Citizen Kane just gets that trophy case treatment. It sits on an untouchable shelf with movies like Casablanca, Ben Hur, and The Godfather. All great films (especially the latter), but there are good films being made all the time. It's just that history makes us appreciate things more--we never adorn modern films, songs or athletes as much the ones from the past. It's human nostalgia. But in time, we'll all appreciate more films being made today.

    Another thing to mention: even when directors go bad they still maintain an air of self-awareness occasionally. That film was very well received and, if I remember correctly, was part of the AFI Top 100 American Films. How much of that film's success can be attributed to him? Amelia Doubleyou A lot of people think Star Wars was George Lucas's movie. But thats not entirely true. Dozens of great artists worked on it. Actually Lucas's original idea was nothing like the final product. E.g: Han Solo was supposed to be a 60 years old alien in the type of a used car sales man (???). And the dark side was called the ,,the booger". And in the very first draft every stormtrooper was supposed to have a lightsaber. Gary Kurtz (the producer of the movie and friend of Lucas) helped him to make his movies good. He helped him with Americcan Graffiti and ANH and ESB. When Lucas got too much fame and started to become more and more arrogant (plus his divorce also had a huge impact on him) he started to listen less and less to other artists. Gary Kurtz thought that the moral and the characters were the reason why people loved Star Wars. Lucas said it was the special effects. Kurtz also didnt want 2nd death star and ewoks (he found both idea uncreative and childish) so he left the project and never worked with Lucas anymore. So ROTJ, the worst of the OT was born. During the making of the prequels he surrounded himself with yes men and we know how it turned out to be. Note, some of these are only assumpitons, because noone was there but those two, but this is most likely what happened.

  • @BugLondon

    @BugLondon

    +DavisWOW Lucas was nowhere near arrogant. He approached all his friends to direct the prequels first but only did himself when they were all too intimidated. Star Wars was the product of many visions but that is true of most movies including the prequels. The final product was very different from the concept but that is true of most moves including the prequels.

  • @DavisWOW

    @DavisWOW

    8 жыл бұрын

    Apothecary2 The prequels are 100% Lucas' s work, the final product is basically the first draft of the script. Only very few changes were made. E.g: The factory scene in aotc wasnt in the script.
