I work in a field that uses a lot of math and the 2nd greek letter is used for a lot of things. I have only ever known one old timer that said "beeta." That is all.

That was Jules Lines, underground British soloist, trying to solo an E9 (F8a). He walked away unscathed. His book Tears of the Dawn is pretty special.

I will actually tell you: Every specialization makes up it's own jargon so they can feel a part of something different and separate from the plebs. I got degrees in sociology and psychology, both sides made up words for the same stuff and then expected you to know the exact phrasing they use in that particular field. They both felt super knowledgeable when they knew their words. What it actually does is push novices away and scare people from the field or hobby entirely.

It's actually just to communicate more easily. We're usually more embarrassed to use jargon around newbies than haughty, because we know it sounds ridiculous, but it's useful.
