"Why Did you Leave your Last Job?" Best Answer.
Welcome to another educational HR video on how to pass a job interview. Sometimes we leave a job. Sometimes we are laid off. Sometimes we are fired. How should we explain to an interviewer (whether they are a recruiter or hiring manager), and how MUCH should we explain. Well, it depends on whether it is a first-round interview or a later-round interview. What we say also depends on whether we were laid off, left/resigned, or were fired. I give broad guidelines and example answers in all of these situations, as well as several principles that are at play. Knowing these can help to frame your answer.
Read more about Job Interviews: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job_int...
I'm going to give you the best answer (from a former CEO).
This is the best way I've ever seen to answer this question, including its other forms: why did you quit, why did you leave you last position, have you quit a job, why are you seeking new opportunities, etc.
There is a big difference between what you learn in business school, and what you need to know in the real world - just ask any startup founder or business owner! My goal is to focus on the real-world aspects of business, giving practical tips and tricks that are not usually covered in school.
This channel is a platform to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed. It is also to help the world at large to be more effective and successful. The world can certainly use more inspiring leaders, more successful entrepreneurs, and more capable managers - that is what I would like to help bring about.
Who Am I?
I am a practicing management consultant, former CEO, and entrepreneur. I have led many businesses to success, as well as several startups. Among other things, I have an engineering degree, an MBA, a master's degree in finance, and a master black belt in lean six sigma.
I have worked across five industries, and have worked in both large enterprise and small businesses. In the last five years, I have also been mentoring startup founders and teaching business at a post-graduate level.
Thank you for being here and reading this, and have yourself an amazing day!

Most recent interviewer (for the job I currently have) asked why I left. I responded by asking her if she's ever worked so much overtime in a month that she couldn't state her birthday, home address, and phone number. Then asked her if she had ever worked 12 hours a day for six months without a day off. After picking her jaw up off the desk she said I'd never work more than 8 hrs a day unless I wanted to and that weekend might happen once a month then she asked if I wanted to set my start date for a week later. Tbh I had become so used to mandatory overtime with the threat of being fired that I had no idea there were still places that just don't work over time and it nearly all volunteered if it does happen.

There is a substantial difference, however, between being fired for most reasons and, for example, being fired for endangering colleagues or customers. If you were fired because you put your foot down to avoid/stop such behaviour then any company eliminating you from the pool is obviously not a company you should want to work for.

I have been an interviewer once in my career, and this rings very true to the experience I had. We had a preferred candidate: an internal employee working in another team. Interview starts and this person immediately starts with criticism and negativity towards their current team. They didn't want this role, they wanted out of their current one. I stopped listening to their answers after that, because I was adamant that I didn't want them in our team. I was overruled, the new hire snowed dissatisfaction with the role within a month, gone within 6. Silver lining, though: their hire secured a significant, out-of-cycle pay rise for me

Truth: I was significantly underpaid, and lacked benefits on top of it. Actual answer(with truth, but no negatives): "I loved my previous job, but it was an hour long drive. I'm looking to cut down on my commute. Your office is only 15 mins away from me, which is perfect for me." It worked. I changed jobs and basically work the same job title and same amount of hours per week, but with $30,000 more per year + benefits.

My personal favorite, had a change in management and while I loved the job the new direction the management was taking the company and my 🎉career goals no longer lined up any more. In reality the new manager was a b word that ran the small ambulance service into the dirt and ran off over 100 years worth of paramedic experience in 6 months because she didn’t have a friggin clue what she was doing or how to treat medics that had been doing nearly as long as her smug a had been alive. No I’m not bitter about leaving that job, that community, or the amazing work schedule, not at all. A hiring manager will never hear me say any of that though.

I'll mever forget being fired from a dealership for people coming back with their oil dripping. Why was this happening? The company provided tools were 20 years old and desperately needed to be replaced. Corporate also started having their on site managers start enforcing a new rule that prohibited us from using our personally owned higher quality tools. Mere days after removing said tools back home, the problem started to occur. It's not like we hadn't mentioned what needed to be done, but there seemed to be more care in holding someone beneath management responsible for the problem. I just happened to be lucky numero uno

I never left any job, but I did have two jobs leave me. With the first one even the building is gone now and with the other, they sold out to an entity that liquidated the place and consolidated the machinery and technology to other plants.

So is not fulfilling you probationary period the same as being fired as this is whats happening to me i had no lates no sick competent worker the thing that happened was thai i was not trained properly on doing paperwork which looked like i was not doing my main job properly as a housekeeper😢

No. Those are two different things. Being fired is being terminated "for cause" (I.e. You did something bad). It sounds like you were "terminated without cause" which is like a layoff (I.e. They officially just didn't need you anymore, or could not afford to pay you anymore).

Is good to say that you leave your last job because you want a better salary?

  • @TheCompaniesExpert

    @TheCompaniesExpert

No, because it makes you appear as the type of person who will leave because they only care about money. It may be true, and most people would feel this way, but SAYING it sends bad signals.

In my field of industrial instrumentation and process controls I had developed a very good reputation, and when the company I'd worked at for 18 years hosed me, I left for greener pastures. Do the best work you can do. Learn as much as you can. Develop your skills and reputation. Don't be afraid to use your skills and reputation to advance your career. Years of service are meaningless.
