Glad that you made it away safely. After seeing your full-speed version of the video, I think it's extremely possible that the shark saw you - not the fish onboard from 5 min before, as a cautious opportunity for a meal. Look again at the attack vector and think about what could have happened if you were seated in the opposite direction.

You're right, a few mins before the "attack" I was sitting side saddle on the opposite side the shark rammed, and would have gone over for sure. I'm no shark expert but the "experts" have said that its highly unusual for a tiger shark to attack that quickly without sniffing around. I guess we'll never know why the shark did what it did.

I think most similar shark attacks like this, happen because there’s a fresh kill in the water or the shark is being territorial & simply defending all aspects in that surrounding area. Be it there’s a kill (Seal 🦭) or an abundance of food in that area….sharks are opportunistic predators, but not the killing machines there made out to be. They weigh up all aspects & looking at this particular incident…that shark most definitely was defending its kill thinking you were trying to mooch in on his hard labours 🦈 ❤

The fish that was landed wasn't bled, and the way the shark attacked the kayak wasn't the way sharks normally approach fish that are being landed. i suspect that shark was scouting the area the wounded seal was in, and was making sure nothing took its kill.

The shark seeing you as competition for the injured seal he planned to eat is a real possibility

Most breeds of sharks and especially tiger sharks… Are born predators. That thing took a bite to see if you were edible. Especially if it let you see it coming. if it was trying to scare you off would not have given up pursuit.

@@sharaguchi1 I say that because a 5-6’ hammerhead try to ram me several times in the Gulf of Mexico. Followed me long enough I finally gave-up trying to fish and went to shore. Strangest behavior I had ever seen by a shark. Found out later it was mating season. He must of thought I was competition for the females in the area.

@@seanrogers8548 It sounded like you had a better understanding of shark behavior than the average person posting comments with no background at all. 🙂 The shark that rammed me wasn't trying to sneak up at all, it was charging from what would be the front of the animal, and it struck the kayak hard to scare it off. It wasn't actively taking bites out of the kayak.

The tiger sharks in Hawaii, in this area have been seen slowly cruising around on the surface. Maybe they are looking for floating turtles that frequent the bay?

Nah. It thought you were a big fish coz you had fish onboard. They wouldn't try attack something bigger to ward it off, they'd just try get to the kill quicker. They're not hunting by eyesight, they using electrical field energy and scent. You were a big dead fish to it.😂😂
