Why did the Spice Girls split up?
00:00 Introduction
01:07 The split
02:07 Reasons for the split -
(1)Forever
09:43 (2)Melanie C
11:48 (3)Solo careers
Mini-music documentary about 90s pop phenomenon the Spice Girls, who still to this day are the biggest girl-band ever, selling over 40 million albums during their heyday, a period which lasted just over two years.
And whilst the Spice Girls have never officially split up & have reunited over the years; just a few weeks after the release of their third album ‘Forever’ in 2000, the girls agreed to take an extended hiatus, which effectively spelled the end of the band. This video looks at the reasons for the split.

Fun fact - Geri and Mel b were in a 1 year secret relationship. I don’t know if it’s a fun fact but it’s a fact 😂
I totally agree - after Geri left, the band was completely stripped of their image and individuality. Of course they were growing up as women too but that uniqueness that gave them their infamous monikors didn't apply at all during the Forever era. I was one of those fans that held on into 2001 (I was 16, I converted to S Club - Simon Fuller must've been thrilled! 😆) and I remember how painful it was seeing that they no longer had the desire to continue the group with the same commitment. Plus as you pointed out I just couldn't see them competing with Britney/BSB/NSYNC in America are they were chasing that 'R&B' sound on Forever. Great video - I found your channel on recommended you do a great job!

Mel C said a few times that the beginning of the end was when Geri left. Geri was the weakest in dancing and singing but she was the soul of the spice girls, she even came up with the name. I once played Schizophonic to friends who had never heard about it and they said "this sounds exactly like the spice girls"...Part of the success I think was the simplicity, the catchiness of those pop songs and I think to some extent they were produced around Geri because of her limitations. The choreographies even, which made it easy for kids to learn as well. They were also already distancing themselves from their personas even before Geri left, I wonder what a third album would have sounded like with her. Great videos btw Jonny!

I don't think she was the weakest vocally but people are allowed to disagree. She was a very good songwriter for the group, that is out of question and her voice is very distinctive so yes, she took all she gave to the Spice Girls when she left and made Schizophonic and it sounds more like a proper Spice Girls third album than Forever does. They seemed clueless about who they were once she left, trying to become an american sounding R&B group. Also they just did not look like Spice Girls anymore once Geri was gone. From an aesthetic point of view, the redhead really made it Spicy. They looked pretty ordinary on Forever. The Spice was gone.

And you believe anything Mel C says ? Mel C always criticized Geri, Victoria and even Mel B. She wasn't as beautiful as them and I'm sure, she was the least popular spice girl in the band. In my country no one claimed Mel C as their favorite. It was all about Geri, Emma or Victoria. Also, Geri could dance better than all of them put together. Later she easily proved that in her concerts. Vocally she was on the same level with Mel B, Emma and Victoria. Mel C was the strongest, I can give it to her

amé lo detallado y preciso que fue esta investigación.. Love this girls. Good work Jonny
Geri was labeled the lead singer in 1995 in a very high profile magazine and since I never saw that again I figured it was one of those early journalistic judgements or mistakes. But given that the album they release after she left, the cover looks like a farewell album, the vibe felt like a “it’s been real” album, and Why release a song called goodbye if you’re not ending things?
Melanie C fans reaaally love to put Geri down, but Geri was the mastermind of the group, from coming up with the name to being the main writer of their songs, I mean, Viva Forever a song the fans think is the best Spice Girls song, was mainly written by Geri. When Geri left, she took the “spice” with her, Schizophonic sounds more like a Spice Girls album than Forever. I think in a perfect scenario, a third Spice album would have been released in November 98, to keep the schedule with Spice released in Nov 96 and Spiceworld in Nov 97. It was no secret the girls were writing and recording new music while they were in Dublin, Ireland rehearsing for the Spiceworld Tour 1998.

its not just geri, its the dynamic, its not the same anymore specially having a phenominal success as 5 piece member even if the person who left the group isn't geri. also the album Forever wasn't as pop-ish enough to keep them on top.
This breakup was similar to the split of Duran Duran 1. Geri's leaving was similar to Roger Taylor and Mel C was similar to Andy Taylor leaving. And Geri,Mel B,Mel C ,and Victoria was similar to side projects The Power Station and Arcadia.they were in each other's pockets since they were late teens. They don't need to release anything, because it will definitely ruin their legacy. Also, there is a problem with ageism, they wouldn't chart anywhere. Even back in 2007 when they released Greatest Hits, "Headlines" was not as successful as the singles from 90s.
They started out *so* strong as a quartet! 'Goodbye' is such a beautiful song and it has excellent production values. Honestly, one of their greatest songs. I remember the B-side to that was a cover of 'Christmas Wrapping' and that had their trademark camp cheekiness to it. I so wish they hadn't teamed with the producers they did for the third album...it just didn't feel right for them.

Really interesting video, thanks. I was a huge Spice Girls fan back in the day and have such fond memories of the Spice and Spiceworld era. I remember loving Holler when I first heard it, but ultimately being disappointed by the overly produced American sound of Forever. Their 99 Christmas in the Round Earls Court gigs were promising, showcasing the catchy pop version of Right Back at Ya as well as WOMAN. Sadly, as you mention, Right Back at Ya changed sound for Forever and WOMAN (an instant fave) was also nowhere to be seen. I really think the lack of a manager impacted the course of Forever and still has an effect today. To their credit the girls managed to get through the American dates of the 98 tour and even come together for the brilliant Goodbye, but it all changed after that. Westlife lay the challenge by setting their album release date for the same week as Forever, which you would think the girls would have embraced. Instead they didn’t bother with any form of significant promo. Headlines release was poorly handled in 2007, odd video choice, digital release followed by physical release weeks later impacting their charting, no promo done in the UK. The 2007 and 2019 tours also not receiving any DVD release is baffling. I do wish they would be more creative and respectful of their legacy - while the 2019 tour was brilliant, the 25th anniversary of Spice and Spiceworld was somewhat disappointing (why didn’t they include all b-sides). I would also love to hear some new material from them! If Take That/ Steps could do it, then the Spice Girls should be able to also - get back working with their dream production team (Biff, Stannard/ Rowe or Elliot Kennedy) and give us a few new songs. This is probably wishful thinking on my part, but a fan can dream😂

Yeah I guess it's different when you're in your forties - you tend to be more comfortable with yourself. And they probably appreciate how important those original images still are.
For me, Geri was the glue, strength and wackiness between them, and well, also the main songwriter so, if you really want to hear a "Spicesque 3rd album sound" you should need Simon. Without him, the closer is go to "Schizophonic" instead of Forever. It brings A LOT of very very, first listen suspiciously similar sounds. With Forever, the name was bad, the photoshoot was terrible (they look older), there was no promo, the timing was terrible, it was just to extend the bubblegum. Facts are facts and, as VB said, u can´t be at he Spice Bubble forever. I love them, i love Holler, Goodbye and IYWHSF. But what they did to "Right Back At Ya", having "Time Goes By", "LLLTW" or "Oxygen" instead of sound like them 3 previous Christmas number ones???? UNFORGIVABLE. @Twisted Elegance NOT AT ALL !!! To ANY casual fan, the only song they know about Spice Girls is definitely "Wannabe". EVERYONE know that song, it's not even up for debate. I don't know in what country you live in but "I Turn To You" is played nowhere like that on radio today and far from being one of the most popular songs of the 90's, especially that the song was released in 2000; like c'mon. It was a big hit in 2000, but not that much to the point it gets still played today. "Livin La Vida Loca", "Killing Me Softly", "Barbie Girl" or "Un-Break My Heart" for example are songs from the 90's who were one of the most popular and still get played on radio today often. "I Turn To You" is nowhere near that (especially for the 2000 decade in which the song was actually released worldwide). Otherwise I agree about their natural next step musical choice, because Spice Girls was initially a Pop/R&B group in the first place. "Say You'll Be There", "Last Time Lover", "Something Kinda Funny", "Naked", "Take Me Home", "Bumper To Bumper" are R&Bish songs.

@@TwistedElegance So many untrue things. Geris songs were on the charts for a long time. She had 5 major major hits, It's Raining Men was the best selling song of the year in France in 2001, 3 years into her solo career. Look At Me sold 150.000 first week despite peaking at #2. All her four solo number ones debuted with more than 110.000 copies sold first week. I wonder where you get your info on them immediately falling off? LOL Lift Me Up spend 19 weeks on the charts, thats 5 months, Mi Chico Latino, Raining Men and even Scream If You Want To Go Faster spend 15 weeks on te charts, Look At Me, Bag It Up spend 14 weeks. Her songs had staying power. Also Holler was not a major hit in Europe, the chartpeaks are very modest outside the UK considering how big they were before and how famous. In fact It'S Raining Men did better everywhere. Also Wannabe was far bigger everywhere than Spice Up Your Life. Wannabe outsold Spice Up Your Life in the Uk, The US, Germany and pretty much every other market in the world. The youtube views and Spotify streams speak for its impact as well.
Forever has some really good vocals in it, but it has no soul! Those songs could have been sung by anyone... there were no spice girls stamp on it or anything we could identify with or relate to! It surely reflects the way it was produced and recorded: just picked up vocals here and there and mixed by someone distante

I'm glad they're all still chummy publicly though. Most stay together or pretend to be for multi million dollar offers; yet all five Spice Girls seem to not mind each other n such. Sure 2022's Geri's bday bash said Mel B wasn't there via the press; yet I feel it was Mel giving the spotlight on Geri that night; since around the same time she announced that she was engaged. So to give Geri that spotlight on solely her bday, n even VB being there too; just shows these are grown as eff adults; who spread their Spice Girls passions on their own right; so huge of a phenomenon; there's no need for so many reunions or new music. I enjoy all of them quite well individually on their social media n wherever they roam or sell their own brands of stuff. Not many groups can say each member has legit solo career paths on the mainstream level such as the Spice Girls do. That's something that should never be overlooked.

I always thought that an E.P in December 98 would have been a great idea followed in November 99 by the third album (pop) and in 2000 by the R&B album

I also think, which no one talks about, is that I think the public were Spiced out by then, we had had 2 years of absolute world domination. Then it all went quiet for a few months and boom, solo Geri, solo Melanie C, a solo Emma song and Mel Bs solo stuff. The public had possibly had enough. And into 2000 Melanie C and Geri were going strong. After hearing Mel Cs Northern Star, Forever sounded nothing like the Spice girls to me. Too generic, not poppy enough, no Geri to add that Spice to the songs. Schizophonic amd Northern Star mixed could have been a great third album. Poor Mel C had had enough as well.

@Here's Jonny she had, plus they were all so exhausted. I do think when you compare Forever, to Northern Star, you could see Forever was not Melanie Cs style or direction. Sadly that 3rd poppy album will never see the light of day. I do hold some hope as we got C U Next Tuesday so you never know
Northern Star by Mel C is by far the best Album of all the solo projects. Every song on that album was a masterpiece, what’s weird is the weakest song IMO is the lead song Going Down, literally the only song I skipped but I guess it was because it sounded so far from a Spice Girls track is the reason it was the lead single to that album. Mel’s Songs after that album did seem to change for me, I liked the 2nd album but not as much. I did think Mel C would have made another Album like her first but with her more recent music I feel like she has got her vibe back again, and they feel like the continuation of Northern Star again IMO.

But unlike for the other girl groups that literally break up, Spice Girls are all still hanging out personally.
They fell apart when Geri left. The entire premise of the band was unbreakable friendship. Geri’s departure violated the whole thing. I was a young teenager when Geri, and remember how suddenly it was, left. It was horrifying and sad. Geri should never have left. Sickening. As for “Forever”, the girls failed more when they went American-style urban for the third album. It wasn’t an authentic sound to them. The sound was wrong, the image/styling was bland to nearly anonymous. Geri was the center point of this group and with her gone, and like I said the band’s friendship premise violated, the girls saw no reason to attempt to go on without Ginger Spice. It was futile. Look at them during this era - they look so defeated. And uninterested. I’m sure they were feeling traumatized, betrayed and bewildered as well. And angry.
@Marc-zi5cq

Forever was 2 years after Geri left, if they were still angry at this point, they needed some therapy ;) Geri did not leave completely out of the blue, we know about the friction with Mel B at the time, so they definitely knew too.
Get ur facts right! They didn’t broke up. Mel C has stated many times that they didn’t broke up but instead they took a break from 2000 to focus on their solo career.

It really makes ZERO sense for people to say that Forever was a bad album because it was "too R&B sounding".......like, HUH?!?!? You all ARE aware of the fact that ALL of the Spice Girls music has an R&B sound to it, right? Like, I know they were a mostly White group from the UK but ALL of the music is inspired by R&B, Funk, Disco, Jazz & HipHop. Without those genres as the basis of their sound, there is no Spice Girls music. The reason "Forever" doesn't really fit in with their other 2 albums is that (in many ways) "Forever" is less funk & disco influenced AND the instrumentals of the songs lacks live instrumentation. "Forever" doesn't sound any more R&B than the other albums, it just has les live instrumentation and isn't pulling for music sound of the 60s, 70s & 80s like their first 2 albums did. "Forever" sounds VERY early 2000s. It's got that Y2K sound

Yes their music did have a r ‘n’b influence from day one but with Forever it definitely sounded a lot more slick, polished, American and more obviously r’n’b. And the melodies were definitely less pop.
They needed geri's crazy mind to publish the album... By the way to call the album forever is kina ironic
Always makes me sad to think how it fizzled out. I wish they’d been more committed to making the album a success, and then moved on to their solo careers.

In my opinion, Forever is Spice Girls' underrated magnum opus. Fuck the inviduality, i have loved this era of Spice Girls with my whole heart my whole life. Everyone in late 2000 was crying how Forever killed of the playfulness of Spices just to replace thier characters with bland r&b wannabes, but people were so used to Spice Girls colorful past that they were totally blind and didnt see that Forever was a great r&b album that aged as fine wine and the same can be said about these timeless r&b hits that were mentioned here as "If You Had My Love" and "Its Not Right, But Its Okay".Spice is on a strong second place being a great album and lets just forget about the Spiceworld. During the Spiceworld era Spices reached the peak of cheesyness, mabye outside the single "Stop". Also, the music video for Too Much was fun, but i couldnt help myself to just skip the track every time i.listend to the record.

I don’t think it sold 4 million. It bombed in the States where three years previously they had had the biggest selling album of the year. There was only one single from it (maybe two if you include Goodbye, a song from 2 years previously). I don’t think anyone would consider an album with 1 or 2 singles a success. It sold approx 10 million less than their previous album Spiceworld. I could go on …….
@mickydrew
Жыл бұрын
@@jonnyharvey it sold considerably less but had 3 number 1 singles... Holler, LLLTW and Goodbye. It was always going to sell less without Geri, without the massive promo and with the girls parting ways...but 4 million copies (which is the official sales figure) is still a hit album. It's more than most artists sell today.
Get real...After Geri left the other 4 didn't have her pizzazz at songwriting and the catchiness she brought to the hits was terribly lacking in their last album of only 4. Geri had huge success on her own and the others mocked her before she released her first album they all had to eat crow and their negativity really irked millions of fans and that negativity reflected in their sales....sadly since Geri got married her music is rather Disneyesque and sad.

ohhh great point that people seem to forget. Both Mel C and Victoria have said not so nice things about Geri after she left and the group continued, not sure possibly Mel B too, so that would not bring Geri fans to support them necessarily. She left and took alot of her fans with her...with them dissing her quite alot in 1999 and 2000, not all Geri and former Spice fans were gonna rush out to support their former favorite group after she had already scored 3 no.1 singles and went double platinum with her very spicy debut album.

All of this is true, but it's not what broke up The Spice Girls. At least it's not why Gerri left. Mel B & Gerri had a thing going & Mel ended it. A bittersweet ending for one of the best groups ever. Sadly, evolving did not go quite well for the SG compared to other artists. Also, as you said, America had their own wave of new pop artists, so “Americanizing” the sound and image of these established and extremely famous English girls was not much of a clever move.
