We NEED to talk about Spice Girls

In 1996 five spicy girls broke out to become the biggest group in the world... for two short years.
Since they disbanded in 2000, it seems that the world has forgotten how they were ever popular in the first place. Why?

I was a young teenager in 1996. I was dancing in a club one night in 1996 and they played wannabe. I had no idea who sang it but I remember thinking that they sounded very brazen and bold. I went to the bar for a beer and asked the bar man who sang that song. A week later all the children were dressing as a spice girl .no joke. Then my little sister loved baby spice and we decided to dress her like Emma. She was so beautiful. Little butterflies in her blond hair and everything. By this stage, spice girls were everywhere here in Ireland. You could not escape it. But it brings back happier times to me now. I remember people falling in big shoes in those days to. Shoes were big yokes then. Lol

Everyone gets the call and response in Wannabe wrong. It’s not Geri making the “huh” sound. It’s Mel C. So the call and response is between the two Mel’s. The fact that Geri’s got her mouth open and the camera is still on her makes it look like it’s her. But it’s not, it’s Sporty. Watch the song live and you’ll see it.

They were at the peak of their power, it was the 90’s, you couldn’t just go on their Twitter to see what they were doing or watch their music videos on KZread, you were sat there watching it in your living room with the rest of the Country. The energy in that stadium can be felt. From the introduction to the walk down to the song kicking in. And then it was cherried on top by Geri’s dress. There’s nothing remarkable about any of these women and none of them are winning singing contests individually but together, in this moment, they were *untouchable* . No no.. Spice Girls were less like The Beatles and more like The Monkees, who were treated with the same disregard due to being four actors cast as musicians for a TV show, yet they earned #1 hits and have a huge fanbase. In actuality, the four actors thought they were hired for their musical ability (singers, songwriters, musicians) but the hollywood machine had to churn out weekly hits so they hired songwriters and musicians and had the four actors sing as well as do the weekly TV show. People called them the "pre-fab four" (prefabricated) and never took them seriously. Eventually they fired their producer and became a real band, but the rumor that they couldn't song-write or play instruments has always haunted them.

Except the Spice Girls were one of the few pop groups that actually wrote all their own songs. Every song on all 3 of their studios albums was written by them, including every #1 hit they have ever had. This means that each Spice Girl gets royalties for every song of theirs that is played or used in media, which makes each of them rich.

I truly believe it all comes down to what was stated above. The "Monkees Syndrom" Everyonde knows the story....man named Brady meets lovely lady...er, no....genie in a bottle, rubbed the right way...nope....the whole started as girls who answered call ad, got picked, lived together, was "manufactured", said h to the f no and ran, did their own thing. Unfortunately, co-wrote all their songs, had major ideas that turned into chart-topping realities, intertwined the shit names some lazy reporter gave them and wove that into their individuality stance, and generally did whatever they wanted to do get dropped from that did their own thing umbrella. They were considered "Pure Pop" and even to this day, most acts don't want to be associated with that. There's some stupid stigma on that which I never understood, It took Mel C DECADES to overcome that. Never be ashamed of where you came from. It's how you got to where you are. Admit it, we would all collectively crap our pants if Miley ever dropped a "Best Of Both Worlds" beat in a concert. And she should. (Well, legalities aside, I'm sure).

you gotta love "something kinda funny", the beat is very similar harmonically to "ma quale idea" by pino d'angiò who basically took the bass line from mcfadden and whitehead's "ain't no stopping us now", played it slower and rapped on it (which was mindblowingly ahead of its time for 1980 italy). both of these songs are eternal hits and "something kinda funny" sounds like a 90's american r'n'b version of "ma quale idea" with a sort of simplified bass line, but the catcthy vibe is undoubtedly still there. that's some clever production right there, you take a formula that 's worked well in the past and make it your own. amazing video btw, keep it up

I made a horrible mistake... After watching your awesome Call on me vid, I watched this. I liked it, over saturation is exactly the way it was. You put together great entertaining documentaries, so with the intention of seeing more of your work I subscribed. My KZread homepage is now completely oversaturated with Spice Girls and I can not escape, it's a traumatic flashback to childhood 😭

Extremely nice, I liked how returning to the stolen hat at the end brought us full circle, causing us to reflect on all we've learned whilst also acknowledging our fundamental inability to ever really gain true understanding of a phenomenon that was never within human minds to grasp. P.S. the eye make-up in the "Stop" video made and ended careers for decades afterwards.

1:14:10 Ironically, even the Wiggles have had more of reappraisal than the Spice Girls. The original lineup of are currently on a bestselling reunion tour across Australia. They also had the top voted song of 2021 on Triple J's Hottest 100 (the big youth culture listeners poll down here).

Very good documentary! I learned a lot! I had no idea they made the movie and the album simultaneously plus promotion! you are such a fan, it warms my heart! :D They were the fist group I was ever a fan of! All of my friends were only listening to the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync, (hah, losers! don't know true quality ;p), it is forever a shame we only got 2 albums from them :( To have lived in the UK at that time must have been crazy!

And also thank you for saying in your intro “I’m about to give you EVERYTHING “ and not picking the low hanging fruit and saying “I’m about to give you what you want, what you really really want” ❤❤❤ Edit- Additional comment as i have just reached the 50:39 mark… you just referenced “Troll 2”… are you kidding me??????? Great video and I love the Spice Girls. Very informative and delving into them in a way that I really haven't seen anyone talk about. I love them but they very much did over saturate themselves very quickly, but I don't think we'll see anything like them again. Also big ups on using that Sonic Mega Collection background music when you view the comics for the Spice Shrine.

At first, I was hesitant about watching your video, assuming you'd slag them off or talk crap about them but I pleasantly surprised. You were honest and blunt, but still love them and it shows. Love your sense of humor, and I never knew until now that Emma took that homeless man's hat! How dare she lol. Great video, great critiques, well done. I don't agree with you on everything but you did your research and this was very well done. I'm glad you made the video to show the younger generations how it really was back then. They were overworked, exhausted but made great music and changed the course of music history forever. So, thank you.

Almost everyone knows about the Spice Girls. Those of us that lived through the nineties were completely saturated by all the publicity, so most of us don't need reminding what it was like. I was quite surprised that I learned a few things from the video, and I think it will be a slow-burner on KZread in the coming years as more and more people want to discover or rediscover the Spice Girls. Right now isn't the right time for a revival. Mainly because the band was SO FAMOUS, it feels too soon. (Note that no one was interested in the Beatles in the late '70s and early '80s. It wasn't until the 25th anniversary of Sgt Pepper that interest began re-igniting. Maybe the Spice revival can only happen if the women disappear off the telly/tabloids for a few years).

I love "Spiceworld", to me it is their best album. It's pure bubble gum pop. No it's not very edgy but Bubble Gum pop is meant to be light, fluffy and fun, it's not supposed to be edgy. It didn't need to be risque or sexual like their other two albums. It is also their most diverse and eclectic album with every song sounding unique and different. And if they were so pressed for songs, when why didn't they release "Leader of the Gang" on the album or at least have it be a b-side?

The Gary Glitter song? After the child porn allegations, he was the most unpopular man in Britain. It would have been a PR disaster to do anything that would mean he got paid royalties. It would be like releasing a cover version of the Jim'll Fixit theme tune. When your target market is 4-8 year olds (and you need their parents to buy all your records and mercy) it's not a good idea to have a connection to a famous paedophile.

Now i watched the entire thing. Oh my goodness you covered it entirely so well. The firing of the manager leading to more work/exhaustion later, the lack of cooperation & splitting the group across hemispheres (defeating any chance of performance, like it was a book tour or something?) as a terrible promo for the third album, etc etc. The Forever "era" (or even, I think, the "post Fuller" era) is truly rife with some things. I watch interviews from that time (Emma & Victoria came to the US, where I'm from) & it just wasn't the same. I of course bought the album & was crushed when it wasn't a hit & had zero promo. I still love Holler but yes it totally sounds like a lot of R&B of the time. etc. etc. I could go on but what a great video!! Thanks for making this!!!

This video really does sum up the phenomenon that was the Spice Girls. Their first album was like r&b lite and introduced their more risqué lyrics and messaging while their second album has a lot of songs that seem more like “ideas for songs.” Their grueling schedule and constant merchandising was cool to revisit in depth (ie Chupa Chups branding to target Spain) this video is a fascinating, almost step by step study in pop culture and music; overall a nice tribute to Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh & Sporty.

Came here after the valerie video and man i love the way you coment. Yeah they shouldn't have switch to make music for kids audience only, since we (back then i was a 9 yo kid ) loved them for wannabe and i didn't get the sexualized lyrics or outfits i just loved to see 5 friends having a blast. tbh I also want to point out misogyny (as why they're not remembered ). People in general hate whatever girls in their teens love. It's like a morbid pleasure to despite what teenagers like. It happenes to twilight movies/books too (this one is based con lindsay ellis video aboyt twilight).

That BRIT Awards performance represented the entire nation of Britain collectively saying "oh we are so fucking back". In an age where Britain couldn't be further into its "it's so over" era, it's hard not to see the blinding optimism of the Spice Girls and yearn for simpler times.

I actually really liked it . I agree different perspective and especially the comparison with Friends...and the Spice Girls being equally big pop culture trend setters in the 90s. Despite all the behind the scenes troubles and addiction...Friends stuck together and were there for each other.. that's why they stood the test of time snd are looked back with tremendous respect for not just their craft and brilliance of the show but their genuine friendship behind the scenes even if they haven't been in the same room for years .. the time that they are together they cut out any insecurities and kept it democratic from the get go by taking some divisive actions spearheaded by Scwimmer earlier on.. with our girls.. the moment Geri left or even before that i imagine..they had a huge Take That hangover looming over them and it was all about the race to become the member to be remembered who quit to go at it alone ...Mel C and Geri no doubt were very big Take that fans and it was them mainly who wanted to seperate themselves from the group and be recognized as solo artists. And hsd their careers not taken a dip or nosedived after the initial success due to the spice mania. I doubt the reunion would have happened at all in 2007. The sad part is...that after all is said and done it's really about that one member who outshines the other ..and is a bigger star like Robbie.. turned out to be Victoria'. And i imagine David wanting her to be a spice girl for the fans but there is too much bad taste that came with each tour and reunion.. 98 - -Geri Leaving. 2000 Mel.C mental issues 2007- Mel B and her husband causing the whole thing to go out on a whimper...and their Diva attitude and demands it wasn't a band anymore. It was a group of ladies with a seperate entourage who were more concerned with being their absolute best to outshine each other .. unlike the Heyday where it wasn't so much about looking great but a chemistry and a genuine friendship. I know that bond will always be there..but when one or more members is on a different level of stardom then no matter how much they try there is always going to be that unspoken discomfort which grows over time . Hence its not REALLY about not being comfortable on stage. It's the fact that their ethos is not completely realized till now and it doesn't feel true to some of them to be faking it on stage with that friendship thing when they have such little material to show for. Had their catalogue been bigger and there had been atlesst a third album and they had continued successfully as a five piece.. and ended on a high...things would be much different..and the public wouldn't be so ambivalent about seeing them....on one hand they cling to the 90s nostalgia and the good memories of that era and childhood which is a big plus going in their favor.. on the adverse side they don't learn from their mistakes. If it was too much saturation and product placement and selling out in the 90 s that lost them respect..the reunions are no different..they continue to do the same thing. and cash in on the friendship thing by putting up a poor show and screwing their loyal fans like they did with 2007..2008 ...date after date after date at the 02 to just make the money and then announcing last minute that they can't do it anymore..(i have a theory'that the world had forgotten about them or moved on and the real reason for not taking the shoe to many of the places promised were the lack of registrations) the whole email thing was a standard market survey to test that despite all the promotion and accessibility of launching a website..they didn't get as much demand and registrations from those places where the generation of kids had grown up and most don't remember the spice girls..) plus it's exhausting to tour. With families and what not so why can't they reunite ala Friends. Its still not too late to close this chapter on a high ...and give us something new .the problem is they are still stuck in the 90$ and the traditional approach to make money ie ticket sales and POS merchandise with a bit of social media and on-line ordering thrown in.. not too different from the orignal marketing model. And they fail to make a real mark with their reunions going unnoticed because since they parted with Simon..they didn't have anyone to oversee the visibility angle of them apart from a few tv specials and documentaries here snd there.. even Simon is obselete snd redundant now .. They need to get the right person to mastermind this Reunion if it is going to happen and make money but not in the tried and tested way.. they need to go back to the girl power and female friendship message.. it's the only tactical approach that will get them the mass appreciation and closure...right now they only have the LGBTQ and female in their mid 30 s who tag along with their families and friend's.but once they change the message back to girl power this time unfiltered...it would get people to listen.. and add in narratives of interviews through the concert at a comfortable venue inviting fans and some a list celebrities to sing and dance with them. together they can pull it off.but without posh Netflix and no network will touch them .but they have to knock it out of the park and not Wing it. And give it the best ending it deserves for the guilty pleasure tag to hopefully go away and them being remembered for who they truly are..The OGs of Girl power and Pop music game changers

Really great video. Was hoping you would cover the 2007 reunion tour. I graduated high school that year and it was announced that summer I remember the day they had that press conference and Geri was wearing that AWFUL frilly “free people” type dress 🤮 and go into how they fared in the years that passed. Mel C had amazing solo material and Victoria just basically took over the world of fashion and became a brand in and of herself. She is so fabulous to this day. Also they did the 2012 olympics which was the last time they performed as the five of them as they would tour again without Victoria because she just became to big for that ishhhhhh. These are important moments in their story as well.
