00:00 Men Start Wearing Belts Introduction
When it comes to keeping your trousers up, your big three options are belts, suspenders (or braces), and trouser side-adjusters. Nowadays, belts are by far the most popular option. But how did this come about?
01:07 Terminology: Belts & Girdles
A belt is a band or strap used to support clothing or carry instruments while a band or strap worn around the waist and used to keep garments closed or cinched, rather than supported, is technically called a girdle.
A girdle now refers almost exclusively to an undergarment intended to shape and support the midsection and thighs.
02:26 Early History of Belts
Archaeological evidence for both articles is ubiquitous throughout the Bronze Age and it is likely that belts and girdles are almost as old as the clothes themselves. In the epics of the Greek poet Homer, set around 1200 BC, both girdles and belts are described and were also worn by the Ancient Romans.
03:17 Medieval and Early-Modern Belts
During the European Middle Ages, the blending of multiple cultures produced new fashions in which both belts and girdles were worn with trousers, tunics, and robes. Still, as before, belts were most often associated with utilitarian functions and stored tools and instruments.
04:34 Suspenders Become Supreme
In the early 19th century, London haberdasher Albert Thurston is credited with inventing suspenders. Suspenders held the trousers in place by literally suspending them from the shoulders attached by ties or buttons to the trouser waist. They immediately became popular because at this time clothing manufacturing had entered the Industrial Revolution.
For the rest of the 19th century and into the 20th century, suspenders stayed supreme, supplanting belts as the primary means of keeping one’s trousers up. But belts did not disappear. They persisted as a practical accessory.
08:09 20th Century Ascendancy of Belts
By the early days of the 20th century, the mutual wearing of belts and suspenders slowly fell out of favor. Belts, which were easy to take on and off and could help hold tools became regular wear in manual labor settings. While suspenders were worn at most other times.

I stopped wearing belts when I started gaining weight. The belts would slide down my ample belly. Suspenders hold my pants at the correct level all the time. And when someone asks -"why the red suspenders?" I reply - "they hold my pants up."

6:53 the suspenders while wearing a tool belt look was extraordinarily common for American carpenters through the early 60s. Especially for framers.
I stopped wearing belts, except on rare occasions because I found they had been effecting the shape of my waist. My love handles were at the belt line. Since I stopped wearing belts and opted for overalls and suspenders at work, my love handles have dissapeared. I've also found now that belts are uncomfortable because they put pressure on the hips.

agreed. Suspenders distribute weight more comfortably. I found that during heavy physical work suspenders are way better. If could use nothing but suspenders i would.
Suspenders were an undergarment. Men wore a hat, a jacket and a tie, you might take your jacket off for work purposes but you weren’t properly dressed and put it back on as soon as you were done. Clerks would take their jackets off and pull their shirt sleeves up using their armbands to prevent smudging the ink and staining their shirts, but a manager would not be seen without their jacket or at most waistcoat.
As always, educational and informative. Even comical as always. Thanks Preston

I personally much prefer suspenders, but I'm a rather skinny guy and most (store bought) belts are ineffective at actually holding my trousers up (atleast in comparison). So much so that I often have to punch extra holes.

Most of all I love the thin and narrow belts of the 60s. There is an elegance to that style that is not matched by the 1.5" casual leather belts that are popular today.
Currently wearing overalls at work love your guys's content.
I use both. Suspenders with my suits and belts with chinos and jeans.
I stopped wearing belts about 2 years ago (I'm 61). I bought my first suspenders back then to be fashionable with a suit but I ended up favoring suspenders that that point on. I did wear a belt to work about a week ago for one day and hated it! I'd forgotten how much I dreaded that waist cinching Suspenders are much more comfortable and convenient especially in the men's facilities. Tucking a shirt is easier and the fashion esthetic should be appreciated especially if one is wearing a vest. A great thing about suspenders is that they're inexpensive so it's easy to amass a variety of them to go with anything whether to dress up or to dress down. I'm sold on suspenders.
I wear belts all the time. One, my pants or shorts look incomplete without one and I lost about 20 pounds. Actually, because of that, I had to poke holes in one of my belts and buy some new ones.

Another great video from Preston. Well done.
I love wearing braces but I'm a college student so next to no pants I have look good with braces as they are mid rise. i believe high waisted trousers should be worn with braces and medium waisted trousers should be worn with belts
Given that Preston is quite the accomplished crooner, I'm surprised that the producers didn't have him belt out a tune during the video.
Good choice in casual/fun reading.
Always great content, AND I like the humor!!!
I still wear a belt and suspenders for the same reason stated: I carry a pistol in my waistband. The holster clips to the belt, and suspenders hold the weight.

Question - I Have been watching sitcoms from the late 50s and noticed a lot of men when wearing a belt have the Buckle to the side and not directly above the zipper ,is there a reason for this
My problem with my first set of suspenders was putting them and the pants on, but that just took a while to learn. After that, I discovered their utility when my weight started going up and down. Lately, I have lost weight to the point that it becomes hard to cinch the belt enough, after buying them large enough for my old girth.
For me, I still wear belts with my odd trousers even though I have a bit of a gut and they aren't the best when it comes to holding up my pants. They just look right to me and I have tried a pair with buckle side tabs, but they just looked off and still didn't hold the pants up any better. I would however go with side tab adjusters with suits as they're more formal and don't disrupt the waistline.
good segment, thanks!
Hi, Gentleman's Gazette, what are the different parts of a belt, and how long past the buckle should the tongue extend? Just wondering
I Stopped wearing Belt with long pants due to my extra weight and not wearing my pants in the right spot so I made the Change to Suspender/Braces and Wont look back. I Will wear "A" belt BUT ONLY with Shorts
In the german language a belt is always called „Gürtel“…(girdle).

Whenever I would wear suspenders I would wear the button type not the clip suspenders.
I stopped wearing belts because I lost weight after getting a custom suit and didn't want to get it adjusted until I lost more weight So I bought suspenders and completely fell in love
This may seem like an oddly specific question, but does anyone know where I can find buttonned braces like the ones shown at 4:40, with flat button straps on a metal ring? I'm asking because I find that particular combinaison, especially the detail of the little metal point between the straps, very nice looking, but I can't find a similar item after a long search online. Given that braces aren't really meant to be seen that often, they seem to be an afterthought for menswear shops more often than not, so trying to find a particular look like this is difficult...
Love your videos gentlemans gazzete
Again "On the Mark" keep up the good work
By no means i dress elegantly but use both belt and suspenders (also not formal types) for a single reason, utility and sort of "military" style. I've found myself carrying quite a lot of things in my pants so a belt wouldn't sufice, thus i made me a pair of suspenders which as far as my experience goes, have been excellent in keeping my pants up plus my belt keeping them tight, a lot of unknown questions i never knew i had were answered
Just popping in to say you look great in this video. The hair and polo are perfect on you.
@19:30 nah man you let him explain, good stuff right there
To carry their holster and sidearm !
I used to wear suspenders all of the time. The problem I have with suspenders is cleaning them. Otherwise, I would wear them all the time.
I have always been a devoted suspender wearer for the last 37 years. They can be paired with everything.
New video to start weekend? Awesome! Video stars Preston? Even more awesome!
Good belts are so difficult to find these days. The best I've seen is from Spain: butter soft leather dress belt, reversible too, still good after thirty years
The truth is… Bat Shark repellent can just looks gaudy on a belt.
I just don’t like wearing belts, because I find them uncomfortable while sitting down. Suspenders however are way more comfy 😊
I love wearing belts when tucked in whenver I always go out becuase of their nice design buckles.
Am I the only one that wants more of Preston's hot takes on the DCAU?
Ironically, I'm just starting to explore braces/suspenders. I've always worn belts & always struggled with them. I'm considering making the switch permanent, for trousers at least. I wonder what videos you have extolling the virtues of braces?
More info about that golf shirt, please? Who makes it?
great info Preston. Thank you. You are way cool dude and so is Sven and his tik tok dance lol
I've heard and learned before the video that suspenders were to keep your pants and belts to keep your tools. Also the German word for belt is Gürtel, sounds familiar?
I got a one piece shell cordovan belt that I've only worn once cus I hate wearing things like belts unless I have to...
Hope you can make a video about suspenders/braces
The use of belts dates back to ancient times, when they were mainly used for practical purposes such as securing clothing or carrying tools and weapons. However, the modern belt as we know it today, worn around the waist to support pants or shorts, became popular in the early 20th century. One of the main reasons for the popularity of belts as a fashion accessory for men was the rise of trousers as the primary form of lower-body clothing. Prior to this, men had typically worn knee-length breeches that were held up by suspenders or braces. But with the advent of pants, a new form of waist support was needed, and belts filled this role. Belts also became popular in the military, where they were used to hold up soldiers' trousers and to carry equipment such as ammunition pouches and canteens. This helped to popularize belts as a practical and functional accessory, which in turn contributed to their popularity in civilian fashion.
It is a belt or suspenders but not both unless I am working my trade (electrician) but that is a totally different belt and suspender use. I will say button suspenders are preferred none of those snaps they fit real well with trousers and look better in my opinion. An old tailor gave me this lesson in his shop no belts with suspenders was the rule its one or the other because as a function with tailored trousers it makes little sense. I share that opinion.
I have been watching you guys for a while but this is the first time we have the same shoes.
I enjoy suspenders on occasion and I think they're generally the best-looking way to hold pants up, but one thing suspenders just aren't good for is packing heat. Beltless waistbands just don't have the rigidity to comfortably and securely hold up most handguns, although there are some holsters that can kinda-sorta make up for that nowadays. The Enigma is a definite game-changer for people who want to wear suspenders and a Glock.
Good video, I know I wear a belt literally everyday
excellent !
For casual wear I usually have a belt on (even with pants that fit well enough that they don’t need them), but I have a long torso and really like vests and waistcoats, so always wear suspenders with those outfits. I like that they keep my shirt tucked in, and ensure that my pants are high enough that no shirt peeks out from below my inevitably-too-short vest.
Love braces (I am half British)
18:36 .... Depending on line of your work, of course. Well couldn't said that obviously
My dad has a fireman of the Year award belt buckle but I've never seen him wear it
I wear one to keep my pants or jeans up, plus anything with loops looks better with a belt.
I've stopped buying belts in natural materials. The elements kept rotting them to shreds. Funny enough, my alternative is military style polymer belts. They have near infinite size adjustment, can withstand all sorts of weather conditions, have more robust "buckles", and field repairablilty and sizing. The 511 TDU belt is the GOAT.
Cool video
I think it's because of lower waistlines and the decline of the vest.
I want to see Preston ranting about Batman
As someone who carries a gun professionally, I'm actually disappointed that i dont get to wear suspenders as much
Fantastic video as always. Though I almost threw my phone out the window when the song played before the outfit rundown.

I think we call them Braces here in the U.K. not suspenders.
I'm tall and lanky: suspenders for the win.
Sometimes a belt does not help hold your pants up very well and suspenders are just more efficient. However for about 30 years the US military put everybody in khaki pants and khaki shirts with a belt. You did not wear a coat with that so suspenders would make all the soldiers look out of place and howdy duty. And the pants were cut very high waisted which presents a tailoring problem. being at your military waist or naval looks the best but to get your pants to stay up like that someone has to Taylor in all those khaki pants or the wool ones, with darts around the hips and then flare it out at the waist so you can stand to bend over. I have to do this on all of my reproduction World War II uniforms. If you just tighten up the canvas belt real tight those pants will still work their way down. The only answer is to have them tailored in above your hips noticed the pictures of the men wearing them that there are stress lines across the fly and across the hips where the pockets are set? That’s just to hold the pants up. The belt is above all of that. That’s one reason men’s trousers have been re-cut with a very short rise and they sit way down on your hips instead of at your waist. And if you’re a bit overweight like most people are nowadays your belly protrudes above the top of your pants looking really bad. to look really nice I wear my World War II reproduction cotton khaki pants which have to be starched and ironed, as slacks. But I have to have them tailored up in order to stay up! Adding to the expense. I even put in suspender buttons so that I can wear them under a jacket. The bonus with these older style reproduction pants is that you do get a pocket watch pocket. I will point out that the British khaki pants had no belt loops and no hip pockets which made them much easier to tailor up to fit the guys. Hey if you’re in the British military you’re not supposed to be carrying a wallet anyway, right?. I hope everyone found this interesting and helpful
I still prefer braces. Even though I have some very nice Allen-Edmonds belts.
