The uncle’s speech was one of my favorite scenes. An old military man who has watched the country he fought for, turn into what the republic became. His line of hope and despair being the same, Lena is the hope, but he has nothing but despair. He lost all faith in the country but is bound to serve the will of the people who have all agreed to this horrible pathway.

Neither Henrietta nor Jerome are bad people through and through. Both feel the moral pull that their actions are wrong. Jerome thinks it's his duty to serve the will of the nation, and Henrietta distracts herself with work and dating. Seeing Lena so earnest in her actions reminds them of the moral pull and that, contrary to the narratives they tell themselves, they're not powerless. They *chose* to give up. And that is why they hate her.

In the light novel they give the full context over why Rei snapped, though most of it can be cleaned from that one memory in this episode. If you want I can lay all the ugliness out for you.

Okay now that I have time, be prepared to hate the republic more than you already do. So when all the non Alba were sent to the 86 district, Shin went there with his brother and his parents. In these early days the Republic line was volunteer to serve and after five years re-earn citizenship for you and your family, so dad joins up. On a side note this was probably before the Juggernauts were designed and deployed. So the 86 were sent out with handheld rocket launchers to fight the legion. Unsurprisingly, dad dies. Mom goes to the Republic officials and asks so my husband served and gave his life so where's our citizenship? They reply he didn't finish his full five years, but I guess that's good enough for one kid. If you'd like both your sons to have their citizenship you can always sign up yourself. So mom signs up leaving Shin and Rei with the Alban priest in their camp. Of course mom inevitably dies, and right about the time they learn that, Rei gets a conscription notice because the Republic has stopped bothering with volunteers. So he knows he's going to die. Meanwhile Shin who is about as sheltered as a kid can be under those circumstances, is upset. Especially because of reasons that are strongly implied this episode and made explicit next episode. Shin is asking where mom is. Rei is at literally the lowest moment of his life and I forget if he has the thought and it makes him snap or snaps and that makes him have the thought. But ether way Rei who loves his little brother has the moment where he thinks Mom signed up because she had to save Shin, she's dead because of Shin, and no Rei is going to die because of Shin. So Rei snaps and attacks Shin until the priest stops and Shin recovers and is instantly overwhelmed with guilt and remorse for his actions, because he knows none of this is Shin's fault and he practically killed him. I forget if it was because Rei was too guilt ridden or if the priest wouldn't let him, or both, but Rei never sees Shin again before he leaves to join the army. So that was last time they saw each other.

This part with Annette explains a little more why her marriage proposal contenders are all always "in the wrong age group". Either to old to care about the prejudice of being with someone, who drags the burden of being affiliated to the 86, or to young to know or understand this happened.

The mission Spearhead gets this episode from Lena is literally: advance into legion territory, if you come back we will kill you for disobeying orders. Go fight the legion until you die. A last ditch effort to kill the unkillable members of Spearhead. And once Spearhead sets out on this mission. The next generation of Spearhead will be dropped of at the forward operating base and will do what spearhead had done thus far, and then the new Spearhead will get sent on special recon as well... if any of them last long enough that is.
