When you remarked on Ser Criston Cole's Hand of the King badge being designed into his armor around his neck, it reminded me that when I was originally watching this episode, I felt like I had seen that design before. I looked it up and found that Tyrion had a similar design for the Battle of the Black Water in GoT season 2.

The mission Spearhead gets this episode from Lena is literally: advance into legion territory, if you come back we will kill you for disobeying orders. Go fight the legion until you die. A last ditch effort to kill the unkillable members of Spearhead. And once Spearhead sets out on this mission. The next generation of Spearhead will be dropped of at the forward operating base and will do what spearhead had done thus far, and then the new Spearhead will get sent on special recon as well... if any of them last long enough that is.

Let's gooo Team Akaneee!!! 💙 Addition: from what I know, 2.5D with Stage Around is a 360 degrees stage where the plays use big 360 degrees screen for 2D elements and a real person (actor) as a 3D aspect for bringing 2D (manga, anime, cartoon) into full real life experiences. The big large screen also useful when doing scene transition (scene A change to other next scene, and so on), it also makes it easier for actors and staff when moving props for the next play set/scene. 🙏😅

The bit with the elephant was I believe them wondering if they were going to die in the cage of the 86th district. The Fido montage always makes me a little teary. I think Anju sliding down with the pot and Haruto are the moments that get me. Anju is obvious but I just feel sorry for Haruto that he died just short of getting to go on this journey with his friends.

When I say I shed TEARS when I saw Fido's Life flash before his eyes 😆 That scene messed me up for at least a good dozen rewatches of the scene. What a beautiful episode! One of the best anime of 2021 :)

fun fact the skull night book that is so prominant was a gift from the chief of the nouzen clan in the giad empire his son (shin and reis father) married a pyrope women (red hair and red eyes nouzens had onyx hair and eyes) and moved to the republic it wasn't public knowledge but the chief wanted them to have the book (info from the light novels)

What's between the 86th and other 85 districts is a minefield. Spearhead's orders were to conduct a recon mission with no end date; if they return, they'll be killed. There's really no way for them to retrieve Lena, and, since they're on a suicide mission, it'd mean she'd only be on a suicide mission with them anyway.

Aemond has put all of his xp with vhagar on stealth that's why he wins easily. Stealth builds are always the best. Also rhaenys wasn't a main character she was a side character and that's why i knew that her death was imminent. She was always on the background and those characters die at the end.

The fact that both halves of the episode conclude with both shin and lena crying give me chills. Especially that they are framed opposite of each other when they do (Shin on the left facing right and Lena on thr right facing left). One of my favorite episodes for sure.

Now you can piece together why Shin's brother was upset with him. He blames their family being sent to the 86th district (and eventually to their deaths) due to Shin's interactions with Annette. It really isn't the case. Just like how Annette blames herself for what happened to Shin. More than likely, even if Annette's father tried to save Shin's family, they would have eventually been sent to the 86th district anyway. Using the visual function with the para-raids has a chance of causing blindness, but it's not definitive. At this point, you are seeing Lena at her lowest point. Her uncle has betrayed her, she's lost her best friend, and the members of the Spearhead squadron have gone forward beyond the borders of their country into the unknown. She's pretty much alone now. NOTE: I noticed that you figured out the 5 birds as the survivors of the Spearhead squadron. The red flowers you see toward the end of the episode are known as Red Spider Lilies and are often found near graves in Japan and is regularly used in funerals. They represent death, reincarnation, and final good-byes.

That's an interesting reading, but I don't think Rei really placed any coherent blame on Shin, or that he even knew Annette was a key part of his family not finding safe harbor. I think Rei was simply lost in his despair and his rage. His parents are dead and he knows he's being sent off to die, too. He wants to strike back at the people doing this to him, but he is powerless to do so. So he strikes out at the only person who he can hurt, only stopping once he realizes what he's done.

and then the show recontextualises the idea of the Red Spider Lilies in Ep 22... This show is too fuckin good, and I love your point about Lena, tho I don't know if thats completely accurate, she has a massive setback sure, in terms of emotional connection, but because of her connection with spearhead, specifically Shin, it compels her to keep on fighting, bare the the bloodstained mark of the 'Queen' of the 86, and out of that, the 'Bloody Regina' persona is birthed, out of a promise to never forget... I fuckin love this show so much

I tend to agree with you that Rei was really needing someone or something for him to relive his grief and instead has released them as anger upon Shin. However, I actually am quite convinced that both Rei and Shin realised to some extent that their interaction with Annette’s family was what enabled the RAID devices to be developed, which in turn enabled the Republic to send 86s to fight and to die without having any Albas on the front line. It was when I watched this episode that I got the impression that Rei had this realisation in mind. But it was it a later episode, where Shin explained that he has hidden and decides no longer to hide his power from the Federation, that I am convinced that Shin has a similar realisation as well

I love that in their conversation Lena is shot as villainess leading Annette into the darkness, it's one of my all time anime scenes. She's got real Huck Finn, "Fine I'll go to hell then," energy. Shin and the rest leave Lena behind because they're still under their recon unto death orders. If they turned back around they'd be shot. The reason this feels like a season end is it kinda was. The first volume of the light novels was written for a contest and this was the climax of the story. The epilogue then bounces ahead and then volumes 2+3 backfill that time. The rest of this season is mostly drawn from a series of short stories that also fill in some blank spaces.

86より何十年も前の作品ですが似た話の「シュバルツェ シュマーケン」と言うのがあります このアニメも結構悲しい話です
最後に１つ重要な作品を紹介しておきます もう何十年も前の劇場作品です 監督はあの宮崎駿 彼の劇場版処女作です タイトルは「ルパン三世 カリオストロの城」この作品は当時のハリウッドのアニメ関係者を絶句させた作品です 更にスティーブン スピルバーグ氏はこの映画で描かれるカーチェイスのシーンを見て「この作品のカーチェイスには勝てないからカーチェイスは作らない」と言わせましぜひ見つけ出して見て下さい
