Why can't we sustain attention? | J. Krishnamurti

Subtitles available in: DUTCH, ENGLISH, JAPANESE
Bombay 1985 - Question #2 from Question & Answer Meeting #1
'Why is it that we are not able to sustain attention for more than a couple of minutes?'
---
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

About Krishnamurti , how can I describe this beautiful , splendid, enormous , vast person , taller and higher than any word. Someone said that krishnamurti prepared ground for people and other person made them enlightened . He was right on some part but it was not enough explained. People hold this notion as absolute fact which does not belong to reality. let me say more here to clear that you have a no idea of that person. That person who has no shadow of falsehood, fear. His words were more precious than diamonds , more pure than gold , more cool than breeze, more powerful than atomic energy. But why he is not understood by many. It is not point that he did not make people enlightened . We never know how many people get enlightened by his true words , as not every enlightened person work as a guru so the world will come to know about them. We do not know how many people got lived and become greened and flowered. Why he is not understood on commercial plan? Because his words needs some sharp intelligence and brevity together . It was path totally individually followed and not with collective herds and without any mass effect. Human minds are conditioned with ease and pleasure and afraid to be alone. One can not easily absorb reality in very straight raw way but so mostly were interested into knowing of reality rather to have it. It is like one is watching rain through window sitting in his room and he will never get to know what is meaning of rain drop over his hand and over his body , how it moves, slides , shines and disappear. People gathered around him were mind user , calculated, tired minds but not brave and open enough. People collected around him were serious ,and who were afraid to openness , who were afraid to leave what they were holding. Why such people gathered around him.. because Krishnamurti was taken as serious teacher, who looks sober, intelligent and people took him as a teacher and respected him as a teacher and listened his every talk as a teacher and then left to their houses . They listened him very seriously . So he repeated most of time to them do you understand me , do you got me , can you see it ,can you inquire it by yourself . One can not see his eyes and how these were glowing with glow of fire, suns and stars and universe and his inner was crying for people for Gods sake just see , inquire , see yourself but people were sitting like half paralyzed. People got some relief and peace through his talk for which they came. But there were some people in the corner and did not come for seeking anything, they were different. If you are disappointed and tired from your seeking all around the world then come to listen this old man , who hold mountains of truth and deeper than valley which put you eternal fire with no escape. I am not writing to praise this old person , he is above all these. I am writing because he holds the pure truth. I am not making happy to his followers and pump their egos. Just leave your seriousness and do not listen him as seriously and intellectual half paralyzed and half dead and do not come to listen to his words to save what you hold or you think that he will take your past away or falsehood and do not seek any formula or idea in his words, do not follow his words as followers , do not take his words as rule otherwise words behave as dead and without any meaning. Words got mixed with life then these will bring chemical reaction and transformation. Words depends on you , how much you are allowing it to penetrate and so they disappear into you to become you. It is not mental memorizing , repetition , following words as a rule. Let words meets life and brings all chain reaction. Otherwise words has no meaning without you. He has vision which is powerful than any light. He words are more penetrating than any arrow . leave your shoes outside of sacred house and leave your mind when entered in his world. His words appeal to serious thinking people because he tries to define anatomy, physiology of thought process. It is good that your learn subjects into university but need to get this subject run into veins. Subject is not separate from you and you are only field where it works , there is no garden except you where flowering occurs. Let truth of his words vibrate into your every cells and tissues. Let the truth appears which is waiting for you ever since . You are still wandering and serious about useless things and trifle things of mind. Come here and there is everything for you. It is yours , it is you and you belong to nowhere except this truth. Just close your eyes and stand in center of market and just stand at cross road and listen effortlessly that something is calling you , there is voice among thousand noises , just listen it and take this direction. More you move , more you feel this fire engulfing to make you to be reborn again and burn all ways behind you and you will feel that all stars and planets starting to rotate around you and you are center of this universe. Every particle is center of this universe , there is nothing which is not center. Come my friend and it is not too late , you always welcomed and doors always open for you and which never tired in remaining to be opened. My words are out of this powerful silence for those who lost their ability to listen this silence. come , come step by step, nothing to be afraid , nothing to lose , come near to it, just raise your eyes and all stars are shining over you. You belong to it. Just listen to krishnamurti or any one who pulsates with truth and truth belongs to no one and nobody owns or claim over it,. My words are not balm to your wounds but my words are just old song and nothing new ,which I sing once again and to tell you that where you really belong. Dive !

Yes, exactly I don’t want to be distracted as I’ll miss something. Therefore I feel ‘maintaining attention’ is important. But JK seems to be saying, By labeling one thought as valuable and another bad, a distraction - that a duality is being created by defining, separating or categorizing thoughts. JK says don’t [mis] judge thought flow as distraction. Rather than attempt to maintain ‘attention’, instead maintain awareness - observation of whatever thought comes. Stay open, non-resistive to anything . . . including your own thought flow. Fabricating dualities ( all of which are false, - actually nonexistent ) and the resistance that results impedes spirituality . The problem with duality is that it is untrue. The problem with things are are untrue is that they are not true.

I saw the value of this understanding when I was in class at Bible college. If the teacher said something that opened my mind and spirit to a new thought or perspective, then I would think on that while in class and take the time to write it down. My teacher was wise and understood that when we were writing and not listening, that it was important...important enough that we trusted God that it was worth more than those few minutes of missed lecture. So we weren't seen as being distracted - we were seen as being inspired and illuminated. After writing down our new learning, we'd return to listening. It was an awesome time.

Back in the 70's I read "Think on These Things" based on a recommendation from Alan Watts. I than read the 3 part series "Commentaries on Living". Mind blowing stuff, still my favorite books of his. His description of "beauty" is spot on and when you read it, it's one of those things in life that you know comes directly from the heart of the Universe to you. He has to be related to Tagore! P.S.-Alan Watts' stuff is up there with Krishnamurti's, most especially "Cloud Hidden, Whereabouts Unknow" , "The Wisdom of Insecurity" and last but not least, "The Joyous Cosmology" (with an introduction by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, AKA: Ram Dass. If you can't guess by the 2 men making the intro, the book was written after he experimented with LSD as a sacrament!).

I understood, attending is to attend something happening, attention is the quality of our being like- hearing something of interest we are more intention. In-attention is being without thoughts fully present with our being. Distraction is not at all there it's only not being in attention, to attend one one thing all the time serve no purpose, it is not what we should look for. Rather we can focus on attention and it's quality, to watch any distraction attentively, unattached, and come back to real stuff in attention again and again, and develop this quality. 🙏
