This video is obviously about wild and feral pigeons - not domestic birds who are supplied with adequate nesting sites and materials in a loft environment.

True this. It's a matter of adaptation. I also think that lack of suitable nesting material is also a factor. We provide dried pine needles here in much of the States and they will build fairly well constructed nests if enough are provided. The sturdiest pigeon nests I ever saw were when I was a kid and my great grandmother free lofted her birds (no concerns about hawks in those days). Even though she provided lots of straw for nesting materials, they would collect the small dead twigs from under my great grandmother's grape arbors and build the tidiest nests I've ever seen.

I have had pigeons build very large tall nests.

I've experienced the '3 twigs on a doormat' stye with a beautiful tame feral pair who lived on our front porch (even though there was a pigeonhole nest box they'd used, successfully, still available)

mine have built some ok nest the feather lined ones are quite tidy and snug one stole some rings that were hanging on a wire and bent that around in a circle - they are quite intelligent

All of mine build way to big of nests but they also have a whole straw bale in there coop they always end up with like 4 or 5 inches tall and like a foot radius

Hey Adam I've recently decided to start working with pigeons again I've got a friend giving me a few pairs of nuramburg larks Ive tried to do some research on them but cant seem to find much anything you could tell me about them?

I have a pair of fantail pigeon they use to just lay eggs in a nest bowl they adapted this way from their parents but they when i brought them home i started introducing them twigs and encouraged their natural way.... So now my pigeons literally build huge and perfect nests even though they bring twigs unknowingly from anywhere sometimes me earphone cable too😂😂

@@AdamArcherPigeons IMHO the Benzing System is archaic Time consuming and like something from the 1960's. I am amazed you should be able to minimise admin for club secretaries and do most of Pigeon racing apart from basketing online it is 2024 monopolies stifle competition and in doing so prevent growth of the sport. TopPigeon imho already makes Benzing look like the Crud it is. One person (Lord of the Rings) has to sit there are enter 100's of ring numbers for other flyers - what a party. Imagine if GPS chips were cheaper?

Adam, do you know anything how pigeon diet affects the acidity of their excreta? E.g. do your pigeons have less acidic excrements than urban pigeons? I'm asking because the authorities here are telling me I can't feed them anymore. But I give them high quality nuts and seeds, so I doubt I'm making the problem worse. In fact I might be reducing their acid guana problem that's affecting the monumental buildings. Thank you.

I found an egg a wild pigeon had stuck on its belly. Trying to incubate it now, but it really smells nasty. It's got some cracks but seems to be intact. This a bad egg and should I chuck it?

Try shining a light through the egg and see what it looks like, but it sounds rotten

in Somalia our pigeons do build nests but not good nests
