Wood Pigeon Nest Diary - Eggs, Chicks, Sadness and Success

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Security camera footage of a Common Wood Pigeon nest in a friend's garden. The video starts with the adult Wood Pigeons incubating two eggs. The two chicks that hatch grow quickly thanks to the crop milk they are fed by their parents. Sadly, one of the chicks fell from the nest and didn't survive the fall. The video follows the the surviving chick until it's 20-days old. It fledged successfully and was regularly seen in the garden in the months that followed. Many thanks to Alan for letting me use this fascinating footage.

One of my favourite birds. There's no more soothing sound than the coo coo of a wood pigeon. There's a brave one that visits me several times a day and I can call him down from the trees. His friends want nothing to do with me.

They are not adorable or cute when they start cooing their repetitive call in the early hours of the morning and you’re trying to sleep. The summer is the worst especially when they never leave the trees in your garden and keep multiplying year on year.

Same here, I got a pair nesting in the cherry tree about six feet from my window. Feel strangely proud of them after days they persistently tried to make this nest, those first few twigs constantly falling down to the ground and my disbelief that they could make anything. Yet their nest survived the strong winds we recently had and I have glimpse the whites of eggshells, so there's a moral to be learnt there. My only concern is that they have built directly over a commonly used path and I really hope no egg or chick falls onto the hard concrete.

I have a domestic dove and a domestic turtledove, They live with me. They usually follow me for all my house, as if they were dogs, I love them. Kind regards for all people who love animals, from Quilmes Buenos Aires.

I like this very much - pigeons are such interesting birds. There's a wood pigeon nest in a tree in my garden right now and I think the eggs are being incubated because the hen hardly ever leaves. I'm looking forward to them hatching and following the chicks' progress. The nest itself looks small and flimsy, but I guess the pigeons know what they're doing.

We have a pair of wood pigeons who are daily visitors to our garden. They get some food and water from us and have become very comfortable and familiar with us. It gives me a lot of pleasure feeding them, as they are virtually part of the family now 😂 Last year they brought their new squab to visit us when it flew the nest and it was adorable!! Unfortunately this year they had two babies, but they both fell out the nest and/or were attacked by other birds. The poor things ended up on our lawn. As it's still early in the season here, I'm hoping they try again! 🤞 Thankfully mother and father are still together and appear to be well.

We had some blackbirds nesting this year and if I didn't see one or other of the parents bringing food to the nest for a while, I'd stay staring out the window until one arrived with a beak full of food for the chicks. I currently have wood pigeons nesting in my wisteria bush! Initially they tried to nest on the plinth above my front door but that just resulted in piles of sticks on the ground. Last week I saw them popping in and out of the wisteria with little twigs and since Thursday they have been taking turns sitting on the nest! I have named them Pea (lady pigeon) and Pod.. her husband! So exciting! I have become quite attached to them over the past couple of months ❤️🐦🐦❤️

*Do Natural Disasters Help Bring People Together?* We see people coming together and helping each other out more during crises. Nature sends such situations precisely in order for us to wake up to our connection, and to the idea that we need to consider the benefit of others as our own benefit. Nature is a live system. It is round, connected from beginning to end and vice versa. In other words, it is an integral system, which is in a constant reciprocal connection. When we change our attitudes to each other, we accordingly change the way the system of nature relates to us. If we relate positively to each other, we then feel nature’s influence on us as harmonious and peaceful. In other words, nature influences us the way we influence it through our attitudes to each other. Therefore, when we change our attitudes to nature on the human or social level, even though nature seemingly influences us on the biological level, then our response on the human or social level influences the entire system of nature. The way we then feel nature on the biological level also changes to one that feels harmonious and peaceful.

What I don’t understand is that they say the Wood Pigeon is the “most common out of all pigeons” literally you see only 1-3 of them here and there every miles and miles apart but the other pigeon groups you see in groups of 200-500 EVERYWHERE…. baffling as f!

Maybe the most common of wild pigeons? Because street pigeons are feral descendants of pigeons kept as livestock and pets, so not true wild animals.
