Why Blade Runner 2049 Kinda Sucks | Movie Review / Rant

Фильм және анимация

Movie review / rant explaining why Blade Runner 2049 kinda sucks.
Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. A sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner, the film stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, with Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto in supporting roles. Ford and Edward James Olmos reprise their roles from the original. Set thirty years after the first film, Gosling plays K, a Nexus-9 replicant "blade runner" who uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize society and the course of civilization. Original director Ridley Scott served as an executive producer on the film.
Principal photography took place between July and November 2016, mainly in Budapest, Hungary. Blade Runner 2049 premiered in Los Angeles on October 3, 2017, and was released in the United States in 2D, 3D, and IMAX on October 6, 2017. The film was praised by critics for its performances, direction, cinematography, musical score, production design, visual effects, and faithfulness to the original film, and was considered by many critics to be among the best films of 2017. Despite positive reviews, the film was a box office disappointment, grossing $260 million worldwide against a production budget between $150-185 million.

@@maxpayne4315 the problem isn’t that K isn’t the “main character” it’s that we are given 2 hours of build up to him being the main character, then it’s completely double backed and makes the first two hours pointless. In fact I’d argue K’s presence in the movie has no impact on the plot other than Harrison ford meeting his daughter

I always felt this movie kinda forces you to take itself seriously and profound. Villeneuve, I think, makes movies solely for himself, not putting himself on audience's shoes. Always too much focus on the setting, the cinematography and production design. They all are great - Villeneuve is visionary director in that. But he seriously needs to start considering pacing and rhytm of the story and/or hire Schoonmaker, Sixel kind of editors. Or he could have listened to R.Scott, the producer, because I think he was quite right when said the reason movie flopped is it's too long. Thanks for the review

Good question, possibly interpreted differently by various people who worked on these films. I was under the impression they were androids, but if that were true they could have had a better way to identify them in the original movie. Seems it’s more likely they are constructed from lab grown tissues, which is a serious amount of work compared to cloning. But then again again their brain doesn’t seem to function like an organic one either. So… 🤷‍♂️ but thanks for bringing this up.

    1. I don't see how Hans Zimmer's score is stealing from Vangelis. It's a sequel so of course it'll use similar motifs but also upped the ante with many new pieces. The soundtrack widely varies. 2. They were established as synthetic humans in the first film, and they're not invincible. They can withstand a certain amount of wounds, but of course they're shown to be killed by specialized guns. 3. It makes sense why replicants were intergrated into society in order to help keep the economy afloat. Aware citizens would've been notified by the higher-ups of how to spot replicants through their eyes that change color like Rachel's. A lot of people are familiar with Officer K since he works for the LAPD. 4. Niander Wallace didn't need comeuppance, he nonetheless plays an important role in how the Tyrell Corporation continues to influence society since the first film. Not every villain arc has to play out the same. 5. The surprise that the replicants can give birth is because they were supposedly designed not to, especially when there was no implication of it in Blade Runner 1. The replicants would protest for equal rights and propagate their species more if they found out, which of course the LAPD wants to keep them in line. 6. It made sense why K would go to one of the few people around in L.A. that knew Deckard before his disappearance. Gaff made the orgogami as a symbol of how K was blindly following orders, to which he gradually breaks free from. 7. 2049 was written so that it could follow either continuity of the original or The Final Cut. Wood is rare in the universe, and it takes place 30 years after the original so the dealer that gives K coordinates to where he needs to go hasn't seen much wood before. 8. 2049 isn't sexist in the least, and it's a cruel world for both genders. Yeah, don't comment on that when tons of your videos have been pretty sexist as well (including saying that rape victims deserved to be blamed for getting assaulted, you piece of shit dick with ears). 9. I highly doubt that 2049 ripped off Automata. One of the major concerns in the 2014 film was about robots repairing themselves. There are films that may have coincidental similarities to another from years ago, but it doesn't mean that it intentionally ripped it off. They're very different films. The chase scene in 2049 made sense in the context of events, which leads up to the river fight. Stark contrast there. I just don't get your review, and like your other stuff your style is nitpicky and condescending bullshit.

It's like when they wrote the movie, they had to make absolutely sure, leaving no doubt, that Jared Leto's character is a bad guy - which ends up removing all the poetic dramaturgy of the original movie. His character is so one-sided. I feel like all characters - whether good or bad - should be 'three-dimensional', meaning they should have good and bad sides, making it easy for the viewer to relate to them on many levels. Even the Joker in the batman universe is 'three-dimensional' - he is somehow relatable when he speaks about his motives of anarchy... Like Roy Batty; who wouldn't want to do harm to whoever created you just to be a slave... Jared Leto's character is like; who the hell is he even? He seem just to have a lot of evil and greed without any particular reason.

Some people are calling it ART or MASTERPIECE simply because of the enormous hype and praise it has been getting through paid sources since its release. Such a soulless and forgettable movie should never be termed as ART. It's the same with Dune - no soul or substance beneath the cool visuals. Even the lead actor's performance is so average that I couldn't even connect with his character. How could Denis think of building the Dune world without even developing the characters properly?

Dick, William Gibson and others. I played cyberpunk games in the past and seen movies with cyberpunk settings. But Blade Runner 2049 just isn't cyberpunk. Has nothing to do with the world of the original. Looks and feels like a mixture of post human and neon future. There's no real threat in this world, there's no antagonist, it's just depressing, but not in a good dystopian oppressive kind of way, and as you mentioned, it looks clean even when it's supposed to look dirty or at least battered. Great summary of some of the many flaws of this film. One thing that really bugged me was how they could fool so many people into believing K was the child. I mean, he's a replicant cop. He definitely comes from some sort of factory and he would have been checked many times before being given a badge and a gun. There's no way he could have come out of nowhere without the authorities knowing it. Also, when the Dr sees his memory, she instantly knows it's a real one. How would she know that so quickly and with such certainty unless it's hers? The whole screenplay was written "so the movie can happen" (as Ryan George would say) and not because it made any sense.

Deckard is a replicant. They're partly biological, partially synthetic, and have abilities humans don't have. The replicant in the original movie, Leon Kowalski, was a fissile material loader. He handled radioactive materials by design. Replicants, we can assume, are much more resistant to beta radiation than normal humans. It's also why, contrary to this reviewer appearing stumped, they don't procreate (mostly). They're not identical to humans. They're super strong, resistant to cold and radiation, and are engineered cyborg lifeforms, essentially. A lot of the plot isn't laid out in exposition. It's "blink and you miss it" worldbuilding. Replicants being resistant to radiation was like the third scene in the original, though. Most the 'logical inconsistencies' I've seen pointed out don't exist. They're just people who didn't pay attention to the movies very closely. Deckard isn't explicitly called a replicant, but it's pretty clear he is. I think he was even before the directors cut edit. Deckard is extemely tanky against superhuman strength cyborgs trying to punch his skull in or rip his head off. I also think he has that copper-toned eye shine. We never see any hint that he has a childhood or past of any sort (other than having been a Blade Runner for a time). In my head canon, it's the reason Pris freaks out in the original. She tries to break his neck or rip his head off (and probably could against a human adversary), can't, and literally flips out. It's also, imo, why Roy spared Deckard. He realized he was just another fellow cyborg being played. It makes sense to the plot in the original that it's a revelation that this very human hunter of replicants first finds out they can implant memories to fool them into thinking they're human, then tells a replicant she isn't human, then falls in love with said replicant, then finds out finally that he isn't human either. That their world was a lie. Rachel even asks him if he's ever tried the Voight-Kampf test on himself. That's, imo, not just idle dialogue. It's foreshadowing that Deckard is a replicant and doesn't know it. It's also essentially confirmed by Wallace. That Deckard was made to procreate with Rachel. That Tyrell designed them both to be fancy prototypes that would one day fuck. It makes far less sense that the cyborgs who can't procreate would first be designed to procreate with humans, it makes far more sense to the entire plot that they procreate with themselves. The entire rebellion scene towards the end is about how procreation shows they're a race now. Not just a tool, a machine, a thing, but a living species that has agency, a destiny. The ability to reproduce. At least, it works for me. Tyrell is clearly willing to break the ban on replicants by making prototypes and using them on earth. He gives no shits. He is probably more powerful than any government on earth. The guy lives in a scifi pyramid. A monolithic palace.

What kills me the most about this movie is that in the original Blade Runner, the whole point of the Voight-Kampff test was that the Replicants were emotionally *volatile*. Meaning, they could not reference human memories and thus were emotionally jarred by everything. The point of the Voight-Kampff test was to confuse and provoke them. Roy Batty's character is all about the intense emotional experiences of a Replicant in spite of the insistence by the world that he was not human. However, in Blade Runner 2049, the script treats it as a foregone conclusion that all Replicants are now LESS emotional than everyone else around them. In the transition between the films, it is as if the word "Replicant" had its definition swapped out from "synthetic human" to "android cyborg robot human." Or at least that's what I have to tell myself when I watch this garbage dump of a movie in which Ryan Gosling manages to show a grand total of like five facial expressions across two and a half hours of screen time, and other characters show even less. This movie has absolutely none of the sense of poetry of the original film and quite frankly, I didn't give a shit if a single one of the characters lived or died, because they were all so emotionally dead in the first place.

You’re totally right. The viewer is asked to headcanon so much to draw the connections between films. I honestly never fully understood what a Replicant is and this movie further muddies the waters. If they are lab grown humans, they shouldn’t be as strong as shown. It’s not like they have gorilla arms. They may or may not be able to access their “brains” like computers. They just seem to be whatever a given scenes asks of them. 🤷‍♂️

I personally found Gosling’s performance (especially the moment when he finally breaks) [or even outside of that with the subtleties he uses while acting] to speak with volumes of emotion. To each their own I guess

It was a central theme to the whole BR concept. "More human than human." The fact that they have some way to automatically ID replicants on sight makes zero sense. Also making them into a slave class still on Earth doesn't make sense either. The first move made it clear they were banned on Earth. Just so many arbitrary writing decisions that make no sense. I could go on and on. Just terrible writing. Also the movie looked crap compared to the original. Villeneuve is overrated.

@Stop the Philosophical Zombies About "The first move made it clear they were banned on Earth.". There is short movie supplementing "BR 2049", called "2036: Nexus Dawn". It's not particularly good on it's own but gives a little glimpse into why was ban on producing replicants anulled. What I took from that is: 1. Wallace helped save humanity from starvation, so Goverment treated him kindly and basically asked him, why is he trying to produce replicants again 2. Wallace said that replicants are necessary to acquire resources from off-world colonies and this everything for ensuring humanity's survival 3. In addition to that, he showed goverment members that he can control replicants, so there is minimalized threat And they've taken the risk.

Blade Runner is my favourite film of all time. 2049 is if you took the nuanced dreamlike poetry of that film, and turned it into heavy handed completely obvious allegory that is totally pretentious. Oh and the score is generic. It has these obvious nods to the original then does generic ambient music and both parts don't gel together. Deakins cinematography is pretty nice. That's about it.

But Ridley one: didn't like the idea of them being robots since he just dealt with an android in Alien and did not want to repeat himself, and two: Ridley also was trying to keep costs down and decided that they were to be genetic "replicants" meaning...yes, they ARE living human beings just grown in a lab and not born. Which, is surprising to me that as detailed as your analysis is, and I agree with most if not nearly all of it (*clears throat* Blade Runner 2049 is hot garbage) you should have remembered that very clear fact from the Original Blade Runner (pronounced ONLY Blade Runner) and the fact that, well, they bleed and die. The problem is Replicants can’t possibly have human proportioned organs and function with the super strength they exhibit, and their brain power seems more computer than biological. They didn’t go into great detail about their composition in the original and it threw me off seeing they have a skeleton of bone here. I suppose from a practical standpoint it would be easier to engineer something similar to a replicant than to build an android that passes for human. Checkout the game Policenauts. It features “frozeneers” who are test tube people created for colonization.

In the start you say it doesn't matter that Tyrell Corparition is replaced by Wallace Corparition which isn't true. Tyrell understood the fine details of building Androids meanwhile Wallace doesn't which is shown in the scene where we see Rachel when her eyes are the wrong colour. Also seeing the flower and something being buried there isn't just pure luck and bad writing. The environment is very bleak and is all grey and white so a bright Yellow flower will be noticeable Then there's a date on the tree so K comes to the logical conclusion it might be a grave and it is. Also Decard barely being in the film isn't exactly problem if he was in it more this film would probably be worse as a fil and a sequel. Also the theme of Women Violence is??? Where the hell did that come from? The love story between K and Joy is great and it's emphasised near the end that Joy never really Loved him she was just programed to love her. Then I can be as smart as you! You realize you're letting the mask slip and showing you're kind of a petty dick who's infatuated with his own opinions, right? You didn't, as a person not riddled with insecurities might, simply ask us why we thought the movie was good. Did you? No, you come here and call us tools and assume we don't have reasons for thinking it *is* good. Would you like an itemized list? Maybe an embroidered invitation to a discussion in your honor? Where we plebs try feebly and meekly to convince King Vaughn that he might have misjudged this movie, despite all his brilliance? Gtfo here. If you want to have a discussion don't start by calling your interlocutor a tool, or presuming those who hold contrary opinions to you are shills. You pathetic nobody.

The Blade Runner films are art films there not really conventional movies thats why both films flopped despite good reviews. These types of flicks are about the atmospher and mood not really the plot itself these films are for people who are fans of cinema as an art form rather then an entertainment form. Both Blade Runner films are slow and focus mostly on mood and atmosphere over plot the plots for both films are basic its the higher caliber visuals and film execution that raises the bar of the films themselves in my opinion.

I haven’t seen the video yet so I’m sure there’s some truth to it that I haven’t thought of before. I’ll update my comment after I watch it. Edit: Well I gave it a watch and personally I think he has a blatantly wrong understanding of blade runner but everyone is allowed their own opinion. I'm not going to go into depth otherwise I would basically write a whole novel, but Bladerunner 2049 has become my all time favorite movie. I think it tackles all sorts of issues perfectly. I honestly find the pacing perfect but I can understand that is not for everyone. I found it really well written enough so that it lives in my mind nearly all the time. dude you horribly misrepresented this movie to a disrespectful degree. first off it's not unrealistic to think that a replicant who can read MILLIONS of lines of DNA at once can spot a bright color on a sea of dirt, also you showed the scene of K uncovering the date in a way that implies that it was in the same scene of him killing sapper when in reality it was far later into the movie. Wallace also does get his comeuppance by losing basically everything that could lead him to the secret of replicant reproduction. not to mention replicants are basically build-a-bear humans which the movie is very clear about so it makes perfect sense that they don't just reproduce naturally. replicants have also always been synthetic humans, NOT ANDROIDS.

Swamp Thing Yes, you read that wrong. Very wrong. Not once did I say that it was a report film. Everything stylish about the first movie was modernized and incorporated into 2049. The 2049 script is considered a masterpiece to a lot of screenplay writers. Hampton has really written one of the best sequels and he had to come out of retirement to do so. Ultimately, he improved his writing behaviors and implemented some more nuanced ideas. If you really think that 2049 was intended for “gullible audiences”, you’re probably not aware of the movies box office failure but high critical praise. You’re not truly understand subjectivity my friend. I haven’t once criticised your opinion, but you’re so insistent on refuting mine. I think 2049 is the one of the most stylish movie in recent years, but the story is what keeps me engaged and interested. Blade Runner doesn’t go as in depth into the region of humanity as 2049 does. That’s just personally why I find it “superior”. You may disagree.

I’m not sure who you’re referring to when you say “they”. I hope it isn’t the writers, producers or director. Movie pace was reasonably slow, it’s something I enjoy, but the director has also said that he wish he had also cut it down. We don't know that much about him, we don't know how he feels most of the time, or why he's a Blade Runner. There are a lot of unanswered questions about him and because of that, there is not a whole lot to connect with. He comes off as a bit of an empty void. Blade Runner 2049 quite literally fixes every single issue I have with the first Blade Runner. 2049 takes the same themes as the original and expands on them with a much stronger narrative and better-developed characters. Agent K is an amalgamation of both Roy Batty and Rick Deckard. An incredibly sympathetic replicant who is struggling to find meaning in his existence. He is FAR more interesting of protagonist than Deckard is and his character arc is incredibly satisfying unlike Deckard who doesn't even have one to begin with.

@@VaughnJogVlog Another big issue I have with the original is the romance between Deckard and Rachel. The chemistry between them feels nonexistent and their "love" for each other is extremely underdeveloped, awkward, and forced. In 2049, Agent K's relationship with the JOI is so much more heartfelt and authentic and it gives a tremendous amount of emotional weight to the story, something that was severely lacking from the original Blade Runner. Just take a look at the scene where Deckard pushes Rachel up against a wall forcing her to kiss him. I feel no love between these characters. And the movie is really banking on their relationship so that Deckard can find his humanity in himself. But since I see no love between them, I don't feel much for either of them.
