it's a rip off when the sequel is not really a sequel, just in name and using a plot... to me the text in the beginning telling us about a whole new world is stupid and clearly a way to not have to invest as much time, effort and quality as was done in the REAL Blade Runner.

Franz Styles that’s what I was thinking. Also the Batman trilogy and watchmen are evidence cbm fans are wiser than u think. I also think Dennis would do exceptionally well with obscure dc characters who don’t have mainstream recognition. Red lanterns, karate kid, Martian man hunter, etc

Dave Batista was really good in this movie. He should be given more roles where he actually acts.

I'm liking the idea of some of these blockbusters essentially being art house movies. Not all blockbusters have to be like this but some of them can be to break up what sometimes feels like monotonous filmmaking. You get too much of a certain kind of blockbuster and it sucks the life out of you. But if they can make a movie like Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner every so often, I'd be really happy.

Both movies horrible. rather watch original blade runner a million times.

It is a long film - slow on purpose, it wants the viewer to soak in the feeling. BUT it is not for everyone. Won't be a commercial hit but will be one of those films that will influence other film makers.

f12mnb Agreed. Look at the influence the first Blade Runner had on anime, particularly Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Just those two films alone went on to influence a lot of good anime. I think the director said to himself "I am treading on hollowed ground here, I better not fuck this up!"

That was my problem with Blade Runner 2049. Not because I expected an action-packed movie full of one-liners and explosions, but because it felt like a movie made for the enjoyment of other film makers.

The Revenant and The Hateful Eight were each just as long as this movie, and The Wolf of Wall Street was even longer, and audiences liked them, so I don't think the length will put them off. More often, people get annoyed at really short movies because they feel they didn't get their moneys-worth.

Dude always go to the movie first, then dinner if your going on a date. It gives you something to talk about during dinner, leaving less room for awkwardness. It also helps end the date off on a strong foot.

Blade Runner 2049 restored my faith in sequels. Agreed on the cinematography, and the music was also perfect. Sounded a lot like the original Blade Runner soundtrack and fit every scene in this movie beautifully. I, actually don't think any time I watch this movie from now, I'll be any less excited than when I first watched it.

I’m gonna say it. This is one of the greatest movies of all time. Best movie of the decade 100%.

Blade runner 2049 is my favorite movie of all time and I said that immediately after the green eye intro scene, and not seeing it in cinema until this day is my most stupid decision in my life ... imagine the goosebumps that I had watching it at home but in theater... not watching it in cinema made me depressed more than my ex leaving me lol

I have never sat through an almost 3 hour movie so entranced and in sheer awe at not only what I was watching visually, but also where the plot was going to take us next. There were absolutely no boring parts, because visually, the movie keeps you engaged. This is a masterpiece...just like it's original.

I'm rewatching this review to say this: I'm still in high school, with the dream of becoming a film director one day. I'm working hard towards that, but it is all a process. I don't have a lot of money to go to the theater, and when I do I want to watch something good. I begged my dad to take me to the best theater in my country to watch Blade Runner 2049 for my birthday after watching this review. When the movie was starting up, I got nervous. What if it isn't amazing? What if I don't like it? What if it neither inspires me or fills me with the fear of never being able make something that lives up to it? What will thay say about me, both as a person and a film lover? Suffice to say, I loved every second of it. See, I've always had trouble defining what my favorite movie was. I could never place my finger on any which movie, and I've seen many a masterpiece. Every second of this movie evokes a feeling of awe and joy in the art of film making, something that no other film has done before for me. This movie both inspired and frightened me. I'm more deadset than ever to be a film maker, but at the same time I fear I'll never make something this good. All in all, I'd say Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite movie of all time.

It's amazing to hear that a passion for the Arts is still prevalent in the younger generations. Kids like you give me hope!

This is one of those VERY rare movies that I pretty much refuse to watch on a small screen. It was such an amazing and overwhelming cinematic experience (I saw it three times), that I only want to see it again in a theater, with a huge screen, and big sound. Amazing.

To people saying this movie is overlong and slow, have you ever seen The Godfather? That movie is a masterpiece right? Well guess what. That movie has a runtime of 2 hours 58 minutes. Blade runner 2049 has a runtime of 2 hours 44 minutes. Godfather is considered a masterpiece by everyone including me. And now people are saying blade runner 2049 is bad because it's long and drawn out. It really tells you something about today's moviegoers doesn't it.

Vodka maybe so..but nonetheless it was slow pacing and it was a long film..there have been many films that needed to be long and paced slowly..for the viewers to get a full picture of the films theme and story.. shortening the film..picking up the pacing will sometimes leave out information that's important to the overall theme and story of the film..

I only just watched this film. I hate most sequels to masterpieces so I didn't even pay attention when this came out, let alone read any reviews, as the original Bladerunner is one of my top 5 films of all time and I refuse to let anything dirty its name. Damn I wish I wouldn have paid attention when it was out in theaters. It's amazing even on my little laptop screen, definitely on par with the original.

This movie was absolutely haunting, beautiful and rather sad. The sound design and music was exceptional. I can't get over it. It's now my favorite film of all time. Which I never had before

I shouldn't have to say it but: Its a movie made for adults. Which of late, sci-fi has been for preteens.

@@andrew1983 I think the reason is cause the character was supposed to be an older person, which is why Villeneuve wanted Bowie originally. Leto looks and sounds too young for this role. If Villeneuve really wanted to find the best person to replace Bowie I think someone like Johnny Depp would've been a better fit.

I love this movie so much that I just sometimes watch this review to be happy

Same. I saw it again. Then it clicked. Same thing happened with the first movie. It really is a complex and sophisticated film. Takes a few watches to fully appreciate all the questions it raises and philosophical ideas.

I came out of the theatre blown away, it really makes me sad that it didn’t make a lot of money its opening weekend and I feel that the movie needed to be rewarded for how fucking amazing it was

Some amazing things in the movie are the visuals which are probably the greatest visuals in cinema history, the relationship between Joi and K which is probably the greatest and only romantic relationship in a movie that I cared about, the end fight scene had me on the edge of my seat, the dramatic plot twist that K isn't the child of deckard and Rachel, and also the entrance of Harrison Fords character and the amazing fight scene between him and k.

This is storytelling as it was in the 70’s with epics like The Godfather, it will reward with multiple viewings, the pace isn’t a retina scorching flurry of rapid cuts, but slowly unfolds without being spoon fed. Awesome

It's criminal that this film did so badly in the box office. Very suprising how much it lost the studio. One of those films where I tell myself, thank god I'm alive to see a masterpiece like this! When a film like this and edge of tomorrow does so badly, we get robbed of some great sci fi movies as no studios will touch them.

Just got back from the cinema - so now I could watch the review. I agree on every single point. Amazeballs. And I'd like to add: For an old guy, who watched the original, in the cinema, back in 1982 (I was 13 then), this had a deeper added feeling, that I never expected. It felt like I was back. Back in a dark, depressing, bleak Los Angeles, that I had visited before. Because - just as in the original - the attention to detail was again so mind numbingly brilliant, and the scenes allowed to be so long - that I was once again pulled in. For some 2 hours and 43 minutes - I was there. In this dystopian mega city, where tacky neon signs of overblown proportions try to lure you in. I haven't had that feeling of being transported somewhere else, while watching a movie for a long long time. Not since 1982.

Dune is arguably the greatest sci fi novel of all time, and Frank Herbert was the first major sci fi author to address themes of ecology in his speculative fiction. It takes a while to get used to the way he employs language, and some of the literary conceits he uses - such as the internal character monologues - are a shade dated when viewed with modern eyes, but Dune is still undeniably a masterwork with few if any peers in the genre. The books written by Frank Herbert are widely regarded as the best novels in the continuity, with the later ghostwritten books not typically being held in such high esteem, but if you are going to dip a toe into the universe of Dune do yourself a favour and be sure to read Dune, Dune; Messiah, Children and Dune and God Emperor of Dune at the least. It will take time and the preparedness to let the story unfold at the pace the author intended, but you won't regret it.

Chris, I want to just take a second to thank you for pouring your heart and soul into these videos. I watch all of them. Your passion is contagious. Your love of movies mirrors my love of photography, and your excitement about the craft is amazing. You tell a great story in your videos. Please please please keep making more.

One of the best I have seen, and I’m no spring chicken, crossing all genres including landmarks like Ben Hur (1959), Titanic, Casablanca, 2001, Inherit the Wind (not Gone with), Amadeus, Saving Private Ryan - the list is not long. Blade Runner 2049, for the mature of all ages, is immersive, moving and stunning both visually and aurally and indeed it stands on its own, albeit the impetus for me was the original Blade Runner, making it the perfect sequel - as well. Purchased the movie in 3d to match my theatre viewing experience...and on my fifth home viewing....still incredible! The speculative, marketing inspired demise of 3d in North America is undoubtedly and assuredly premature. 3d format or otherwise the movie remains a masterpiece. It should be the Oscar pick for best movie of 2017, and the cast including Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas and others nominated in respective roles. Consummate actors all, not to mention Denis Villeneuve as Best Director. Thank Ridley Scott for recognizing his genius. The reality is that Science Fiction, even as a statement on the human condition, has never won an Oscar for Best Movie, as far as I know. The Academy Awards will likely miss this, caught up in the social media swamp and the cause of the day. The Academy will likely instead vote for an odd duck or more common place take on the triumphs and tribulations of the human condition, all destined to become mediocrities and also rans for 2017. This in turn, as it continues to demonstrate, makes Oscar night nothing more than a gossips’ social gathering and more redundant and meaningless than ever in what it’s function should be - rewarding real achievement in film. Meanwhile like the first Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 will continue to attract an ever growing following and challenge current and future movie makers to raise the bar on what is now possible.

@@dogandsquirrelslol8966 I stand by my rating and review of BR 2049. 2001 A Space Odyssey, also a masterpiece and a Kubrick production, captured the pre-milenium period of space exploration and marveled at the technology of the time then coupled this with exploration of the unknown and under the impetus of a potential prime mover of sorts. 2049 captured not only a futuristic period, but an in depth look at the human condition in an apocalyptic world, and what remains the essence of the quintessential aspect of human existence, if necessarily and by contrast demonstrated by those who aren’t human at all.

many of the old star trek TV episodes were better than the last Jedi. BR2 is pretty good, but it is a lot to take in.

The great filmmakers of our time are: Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Alejandro González Iñárritu, David Fincher, Alfonso Cuarón, Edgar Wright, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese (yes he's old, but he is still making great films today), and Damien Chazelle.

Calling it now, Blade Runner 2049 is going to be The Dark Knight of the 2010s. Had to go back to this review because I rewatched Blade runner 2049 the other day for the second time. It just gets better with every viewing. The sound in is out of this world. The images composed are insane. This is a movie I will come back to time and time again because this is how you do a sequel right. Just amazing

David Mailand short films can be good. If you have to take longer to tell the story because it's content heavy, fine. This is not one of those situations.

I saw it in the theater and thought is was just ok. Rewatched it on video and I am really starting to fall in love with the movie. Sometimes with movies your first impressions aren't always good ones.

sacflies I can acknowledge that the plot and themes are familiar. However, I don't really see that as a negative. Most films retread some plot or themes, it's kind of a moot argument to begin with. For example, 'Star Wars' is just another retelling of the hero's journey. However, I think most people could agree that 'Star Wars' rose above other like films through it's creative universe, effects, film making etc... I feel similarly towards 'Bladerunner 2049'. Yes we've seen these themes before, but it was executed spectacularly. The cinematography is gorgeous. I can recall several times where I noted how well shots were blocked and framed. I also feel that they did an excellent job with the familiar plot and themes. I thought Gosling's arc was well done and the film had a very satisfying ending. Do I expect everyone to love this film? Obviously not, I put that expectation on no film. People's enjoyment of a film is purely subjective and art would be boring if we all enjoyed the same stuff. However, there is quality film making here and that's what I really appreciate. To be honest, my next favourite film of the year is probably John Wick: Chapter 2. Another slickly made film that retreads familiar plot and themes, but manages to rise above them through excellent film making.

Blade runner 2049 is without a doubt in my top 5 films ever. I've never seen so much beauty on screen than when I watched this in the cinema for the first time, everything about it is so captivating. Especially the score! My god I've listened to that score on repeat since the moment I came out of the cinema. This movie will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Overrated

The key to not being bored of this movie. You have to be engaged. You have to want to go on this journey with the characters. It’s not about the destination it’s about the experience.

Man, so fucking excited for Blade Runner 2049, the first one still is one of my favorite films of all-time, and Denis Villeneuve just can't make a bad movie. Similar to Christopher Nolan, even his worst movie is still REALLY good. All these new upcoming masters like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Damien Chazelle, Alejandro G. Inarritu, Edgar Wright etc. I can't WAIT for what comes next!

Phil Michaels well he likes to make films that feel smarter and better then a casual film. But they have plotholes and logical problems so often they dont work for everybody (dark knight, knight rises, interstellar). But sometimes everything works out and you get big budget well made films like inception or even smaller budget yet intriguing like memento

DamienNightwing isn’t it crazy how these 80s Cult sci-fi/Action movies have had good 20 year sequels so far?

"Harrison Ford gives one of his best performances in years". Likely because he was finally given a script and a story worth putting in the effort. Something with some substance and meaning that made him actually want to act and bring that character to life and not just cash in a huge paycheck in order to finally kill off a character he is tired of playing. Not play this character again so we can cash in on the nostalgia for it but so that the story can be explored and expanded. This film instantly became one of my all time favorites after my first viewing.

He's all of it... He was ashamed of his persiflage, his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness; he was sorry about his cold-bloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case- that he truly regretted killing Jesse, that he missed the man as much as anybody and wished his murder hadn't been necessary. Even as he circulated his saloon he knew that the smiles disappeared when he passed by. He received so many menacing lette-... ...shit, wrong film.

when I hit the thumb down, I was imagining it going into your eye socket.

I loved it beyond words. Agent K's final moments reminded me so much of Rutger Hauer's speech on the roof; except there was no need to say a word. It was powerful. When Deckard asked him "What am I to you?" and K only smiled sadly, I was choked up. Tears in the rain...or in the snow.

Blade Runner 2049 is pure atmosphere and visual perfection. Throughout the entire movie, even during the intense action scenes, you can't help but feel like your in a dream. That's why I love this movie, it's so cinematically immersive.

Well done Chris,,,perfect review....love your work!

I just watched this movie and I LOVED it. I left the theater speechless. I was silent and thinking about it for an hour.

Imaad Shahrukh slow pacing..and the movie being long..doesn't make the film bad..like I said before.. sometimes films need to be long..it becomes important to the overall theme of the film.. shortening the film faster pacing..could effect the overall story and theme of the film..when someone writes a story..it has a beginning, a middle, and a ending.. sometimes when putting it on the big screen..that story may have to be paced slowly..and it may need to be long..to get the full impact of the story as it was written..

Akim Smith Slow pacing works better with likable characters who show emotion, not boring Mary Sues.

Literally just watched the final cut and this one for the first time back to back today. Thought the first one was ok, but I LOVED this one. It made me like the first one even more. Great movie

This movie is an incredibly beautiful and intelligent work of art. I tell people about it every chance I get. It's hypnotic. It's sad. It's spellbinding. I also love loved every frame of this movie.

Should have been directed by Michael Bay. Just fucking with you, this movie was great, as a Blade Runner fan and a movie fan. 10/10 for me.

probably more shaky cam and virtually no panning landscape shots at all. also, the whole film's run-time would probably be cut in half since Michael Bay's films are so rapidly paced, which would kind of take away from the film.

Denis and Gosling are two artists at the top of their game. Can't wait to see this film.

My favorite movie from 17, and this might be my favorite video Chris made. Excellent film.

The 3 hour run-time provided enough time for world-building and intensifying the atmosphere. Denis Villeneuve did an excellent job and had me hooked from start to finish. Shout out to the sound design and music teams too

nowadays people want a 'movie'.. not a film.. that's the different...

It's a cycle. People got tired of "movies" back in the 60's, and watched European "films" instead. Then Bonnie and Clyde happened. And now, people got tired of "films", and want "movies" again.

My god my theatre dissapointed, there wasn't a single poster, they played it on the smallest fucking screen and to top it all off I was the only one there! I beg you, if you love sci-fi, film, brilliant cinematography then SEE IT, it isn't a film it's an event. This is the new T2: Judgement Day all it needs is the audience so please do yourself a favour and watch Blade Runner 2049!

This movie is one of the best I have ever scene in my entire life. Amazing sequel, filmed so well with great directing. Especially seeing it in theaters when it came out. Totally agree! A+

This is the best film review I've encountered since Roger Ebert passed away. You're doing god's work, fella
