What makes Wallace such a terrifying villain is his unshakable belief that the things he does are necessary. He is all about Purpose and if you have no purpose in his great plan you are to be removed. He doesn't even hate you really he just doesn't need you. He's like some kind hyper-intelligent hive-minded insect that only looks like a human being.

have you noticed something? the entire series put an emphasis on eyes as a symbol of humanity. you know, because eyes are the window to the soul...Wallace here is blind, yet presents himself as a an all knowing god of biotechnology. he can afford to have surgery to cure himself, but refuses, instead replacing his eyes with cold machinery later in 2049. its almost as if he views humanity as beneath him, and therefore wants to remain blind to it due its inherent impurity. he also refers to his creations as "angels", meaning his idea of being this new scientific god is to create his version of perfect life: devoid of humanity, cold, and completely obedient to him.

Trivia. In Greek Mythology the prophet/oracle Tiresias was the most powerfull of all despite the fact the he was blind. He was both male and female, he was at the present and the future at the same time, he was among the living and the dead ones and full of lust, always giving his cryptic predictions that eventually came true e.g. he told about narcissus that he would thrive as long as he didn't know himself... so tiresias became in important figure in a lot of ancient stories and tragedies. Let's see what they have taken from that myth and put into this story.

"Tiresias" was able to see the future and give ambiguous answers about it based on Gods' voice. (In Greek mythologody there were plenty of Gods). He was respected among living and dead. I don't know if scientists can see the future, they mostly try to create it. Enterpreneurs? They are trying to catch up with it before the rest of us so that they can make a profit. "Tiresias" was kind of a mentor so I would love to say artists that through art they forsee the mistakes we will do because they most of them are already been made in the past. Scifi even though it's placed in another frame actually tells similar stories with ancient greek tragedies, because they all try to explore what means to be human, the mistakes to avoid, the lessons to be taken, the catharsis in the end, if there is any. (That's always my personnal opinion)

@Meta Man In my humble opinion that happens mostly because while the western storytelling relies on an protagonist. a struggle and an antagonist the myths are talking about archetypes not actuall persons, even when they have given them names. An archetype can stand still within time and that's how it survives through thousands' years time. Thanks for your input :)

@FROZEN EMPIRE antichrist is an antagonist, in terms of storytelling... so it's actually pretty easy to create an antagonist once you have a clear image of your protagonist. It can be a human, a meta-human, an A.I. an idea, whatever triggers people's imagination and feelings.

This guy, Wallace, he seems to fully understand his bio-engineered creations to the last codon in the DNA sequence. It seems that he doesn't see himself as a genetic engineer but a diety, the 1st new human GOD... if he's even human. Just hoping this film is going to be dark and not have a happy ending. Ethan and Kenneth . . . Jared Leto is THE ACTOR of his and my generation. In previous generations ONLY Micky Rourke, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and a petulant Marlon Brando can touch him. RYAN GOSLING - does a great job in 2049, BUT, Jared Leto is in a class by himself. Leto as Wallace Napier makes the movie as every line Jared (Napier) speaks is vitally important in Bladerunner 2049. I have NEVER seen Suicide Squad (the name said it all) . . . and Jared obviously did it for the cash a la De Niro in the EIghties. Great actors can find themselves literally in the poor-house as genuine acting roles don't pay well. Once again, Robert De Niro hit a purple patch with the Godfather, Raging Bull and the The Deer Hunter. However prior to 1991's - Goodfella's - De Niro suffered throughout most of the 80's. . The Eighties were a terrible time for both De Niro and Al Pacino. The latter starred in Scarface in 1980-81 and was not seen again in a major movie until 1989's - Sea of Love.

Because I watched BR2049 before this short movie, my main question was more : why the f*ck did they suppress the limited lifetime that they created in BR ? (precisely to avoid mutinies / losing control on them, even if it means way more replacements) But here he explains that they have to keep exploring and exploiting the stars, that the new design has removed this main defect and that replicants are now completely submissive, that makes more sense, I think this scene should have been at least in introduction.

I don't understand why so many people hate Jared Leto. He's a good actor. Just like anyone in his profession he needs a good script and director. Lord of War is proof enough that Leto can give us an amazing performance and that his issue is not in the quality of b his performance. Suicide Squad was shit. It was a mess and Jared Leto wasn't really given anything to work with. People reflexively hate him for reasons I don't understand. Much like Ben Affleck or Jake Gyllenhall. Whatever you think of them as people they are talented and capable actors who have given many outstanding performances. I b didn't really have an opinion about Jared Leto going into this movie apart from really enjoying his role in Lord of War. I judge him based on his acting. As such he gives a great performance. Niander Wallace is a character that he brought to life. Is he perfect? Heck no. Does he create a mysterious, charismatic villain with motivations that you understand? Yes. It really bothers me when people have this knee jerk hate for an actor to the point where they disregard their performances entirely. Ben Affleck, Jake Gyllenhall, and Jared Leto are perfect examples. All three have been in critically acclaimed roles within critically acclaimed films. Leto has talent, and just like any other actor he needs a good script and director. In BR 2049 he got both and his performance as Niander Wallace reflects that. Blade Runner 2049 is not perfect, no movie is. It does drag on in a few places especially the whole scene with the beehives. However overall it's a masterfully done film with incredibly strong performances from all cast members and some of the most jaw dropping cinematography I've ever seen. It's one of those rare true sequels in an Era of reboots and reimaginings. That's impressive enough but on top of that the movie is exceptional. To the point where it's a legitimate question as to whether BR 2049 is better than the original. In conclusion, judge the movie and performances on their own merits. Unless the actors are axe murderers or rapists there's no reason to instinctively dismiss their performance. Blade Runner 2049 is an outstanding film and people that didn't go see it deserve a good smack in the face.

Jared Leto, being a method actor, was so focused on doing this character so well, he singed his eyes with a hot iron to get the cataracts you see in this film. Now that, people, is devotion. OK, thanks.

+NewtechGS He is. I read he "lived in darkness" as in unlighted rooms and wears special contacts to give his eyes their appearance. No actor is crazy enough to put out their eyes for a part, unless that's the end of their acting career. As far as what he did do that is no different from how far Lon Chaney, Sr. went during his time as a star of silent movies. Check his characters for London After Midnight or The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Jared Leto can't act to save his life. He owns the screen....haha. Good lord. So do boobs, butts and weeners when they appear on screen. Fun to look at. But offer nothing else. Leto's shit career is all rubbish. Nothing worth rewatching or being remembered. I literally forget he exists until he finally lands a job in another crap movie. And he's a narcissistic egotistical asshole because he thinks he just has to "appear" and he's great at everything. Get over your pretty boy fantasy crush, he can't act worth a shit. Like him all you want. But, don't say he owns the screen. Jesus.
