Speaking as someone who adores Blade Runner with a passion, I can honestly say that this movie is a masterpiece. Not quite as good as the original, but I loved every second of this movie. Great review Sean!

Both have great stories, but I preferred the story of the original a little more. Also the original had a better score, better villain and interesting ideas. This new one is amazing, but the first is just a tad better in my opinion.

I feel the slower pace helped me feel I could follow this story a lot better. I mean, the story isn't overly complex but the mystery does reveal itself slowly by surely and its intriguing. That, in turn, allows you to follow it better without feeling like your lost. The slow pace, slow build felt more followable and realistic to me.

I can see that for parts of it, but other times we're just getting very long shots of people entering locations and walking around. They're not thoughtful moments. They're just establishing shots showing off the beautiful scenery. And I just don't see this movie having nearly 3 hours of plot.

Sean Chandler Talks About I can agree with you on that. Not nearly worth 3 hours of plot but I was indeed mesmerized and I didn't mind it so much.

Great review! I love the look ;) I LOVED this movie. I went to a double feature in an Regal RPX theater with the original playing before this new film. I love the original and thought it looked beautiful on the big screen STILL lol This movie is absolutely gorgeous and the score was so fantastic. I had no problem with the length at all personally. I think they left a few too many story plots open at the end of the film but it's one of my favorites for the year so far

This is a great movie. I didn't really like the first Blade Runner but this movie was amazing. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford have great acting and great chemistry together. The director (can't spell) really doesn't ruin the first Blade Runner but instead expands the Blade Runner law which I loved. Jared Leto wasn't that bad at being a werido. The movie is a visual feast. Hope it gets an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Cinematography. I need to watch one more time like the original Blade Runner but right now it's a 9.5/10.

The feel of it is very much like Chris Nolan's film Insomnia (felt like a strange dream) and the pacing was very much like the director's previous film, Arrival. It is too long but as sequels go, it's a good sequel. I love the original film but it's a difficult film to... like... I love it for the look, the noir qualities, the direction, the crazy design work, the lighting, the music - you can feast on what it does to your senses but it can feel like it overwhelms them too much at times - you just feel stuffed and can't concentrate. It's very indulgent. I rarely watch it all the way through.

i get where you're coming from, i thought it was a decent movie but not in the same class as the original, i felt that although in 2049 they took you to different places and it was interesting but i was more gripped in one place like the original, also it doesnt have rutger hauer needless to say, none of the performances in this movie match up to that legendary one by hauer. i was a bit dissapointed about how little harrison ford was in it. i think it was a good movie but i feel like in 10 years there wont be any scenes that will stick with me, whereas in the original there are several of those, like the tears in the rain monologue will stick with me forever and the unicorn scene, the opening interview with one of the repicants, the turtle crawling on his back in the desert. overall i would say it is worth watching but would not call it a sci-fi masterpiece as many others are, let alone as good as the original in my opinion.

I balked at going opening night, mostly due to it's length. I think you can have a slow-paced thoughtful movie in 2 hrs ;) I rewatched BR, and moved rather nicely, it is rather "film noir" in it's pacing ;) but under 2 hrs ;)

Haven't seen this yet but I just watched the original today for the first time. Although it hasn't aged well imo, I can see why people like it. I'll probably see this new one tomorrow or the next day. I went back and rewatched a couple trailers after I watched the original and I had the same thought that you mentioned... that it feels like the original only better. Sooo.... long story short. I think I'll appreciate the new one. I also don't think it'll be a movie I'll want to rewatch over and over, but it does seem like one worth seeing on the big screen, if only for the cinematography.
