My local Best Buy couldn’t get rid of their Earthbound stock. They had a whole shelf for 15 bucks and eventually 5 dollars. I regret not buying more. It’s my favorite game of all time.

And THAT is exactly what matters - it's your favorite game. All of the pricing madness going on these days is irrelevant when compared to the love of the game itself. Or any game. Any love for retro gaming is the real value add, not the amount of money invested. Kudos for having it right.

Hey Blaine, I've watched/enjoyed a lot of your content on mods but never knew you had this channel. Just clicked this video by chance and now subscribing. Believe it or not, my dad got Earthbound for me on clearance from Wal Mart for a whopping $5. I can still remember looking at the price sticker and automatically assuming it must be a garbage game haha. I still have the game and guide, but unfortunately not the box. It was my first JRPG and I still remember how crazy it was to play as a kid. Definitely an experience.

@The Schlockmaster Hey there! So glad you found the channel! Five dollars! WOW! That's really something! If only we knew back then what would happen to retro gaming in 2022. :)

This game a very important staple in the annals of video game history. From its story, to soundtrack and depth of gameplay, it’s a treasure to cherish and behold. I am slowly collecting every version of it to curate, display and share with future generations of retro game enthusiasts.

SNES Classic Mini version of Earthbound is available too! At least it's an official product, despite using emulation.

True! And, just like the original game, the SNES Classic is going up in value too. Darn scalpers!

Completely agree, although I heavily respect the people who love the game to the point of spending some heavy cash preserving it's history through collecting. Who wouldn't want a copy?

Indeed! There were Best Buys closing it out for like $20 at one point. Imagine spending five years of your professional life developing a game for SNES, only to have it marketed like trash (literally) and sold for 1/5th the price on clearance at big box retailers. Ouch!

I remember seeing it for around 100 bucks CIB on Ebay back in 2006. Wish I would have grabbed it. I did bite the bullet and shelled out 300 for Chrono Trigger CIB around 5-6 years ago. Glad I did that.

No doubt! Retro game prices have soared in recent months and years. Buying retro games is like starting a KZread channel. The best time to start was 15 years ago. The second best time to start is today. :)

I spent around 1200 I think on retro CIB games and guides total around that time.I thought I was nuts doing it. Think everything I have now is worth over 3000. I definitely not buying anything anymore though :/.

Wait until a remake or sequel (M3) is released for the price to skyrocket even further. Nintendo never ceases to amaze me at how bottom of the barrel games that nobody wants can suddenly become so valuable. Look at Kirby and Wario games before 2019, and look at their prices now. It’s incredible

Wow, $2500 is ridiculous for a game along with a cardboard box and a guide. I could buy a PS5 Disc Edition, an Xbox Series X, a Switch OLED, a Wii U that has Earthbound installed, and a SNES with an Earthbound loose cartridge or a repo cartridge and save up a lot of money.

Honestly... My theory is it was originally a money laundering scheme that went off the rails. The way I see it, way back in the late 90s, early 2000s. Some folks wanted to launder money online, but... Didn't want to go the obvious route such as valuable jewelry, antique coins, or artwork. They needed something that would fly under the radar and arouse no suspicion whatsoever. So, someone came up with the idea of picking some random item. Something low level. Some videogame i.e. 'Earthbound' (Probably because it stood out with that big box) They bought a few copies when it was still dirt cheap, put them on eBay with ridiculously high buy it now prices. Sold them and received laundered funds. Never actually shipping the product. They kept repeating the process when gamers and collectors noticed the trend, and just like the snowball effect, priced their copies of 'Earthbound' at high collector's prices. Flash forward today... An SNES cartridge that was probably used in a random money laundering scheme that would normally sell for maybe $50-$75 is now selling for hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

I believe it got popular due to emulation. Emulation started in the mid to late 90s for the snes and thats about the time the game shot up to 50 dollars, though my brother paid 40 for his copy at the used game store back in the day, but it was never really cheaper than that. It's a great game packed with culture. Funny story my brother had the box and the scratch and sniff guide. he tacked it to his wall growing up, but in order to do that easily he cut the sides off the box haha. Later he threw it away and the guide got ruined.
