It wasn’t a financial flop as it was more profitable than the original Xbox and Nintendo never really took much of a loss selling them either compared to Sony and Microsoft needing to make up for their losses through software sales.

the hype for n64 was INSANE. it was delayed too much but even so. i was there as a teen for the n64 launch and got it on launch day and it blew away the ps and saturn. i got the ps1 on launch day as well, a year earlier, and mario 64 was very clearly way better than what could be done on ps1. same with wave race 64 the 3rd n64 game.

idk if there's ever been a game that revolutionized the entire industry the way Mario 64 did, no other game I've ever played made me feel that sense of wonder when I played it for the first time, almost like it was unbelievable that it was even possible for a game to look and play like that on a game console

Yeah idk I had an N64 and a PS1 but I never played my PS1 so I just ended up selling it. Then I had an original Xbox and a PS2 and Dreamcast and sold my PS2 as soon as Xbox live launched. I kept my Dreamcast until it stopped working in about 2011

Oops anyway i always thought 64 was the best of it's generation.95% of my friends said ps was better but imo that's only because I was in the hood and there parents just couldn't afford 64 so the got ps and they felt what they had was better..but I can't lie I went an got a ps for gran Turismo and nfs.. but they were the only games I cared about that ps had

I honestly feel the N64 had the worst library of the 3 major systems at the time, not helped by a frankly awful controller and the blurry visuals. There's some games on it that I like, but on the whole, it's a system that I don't hold much love for.

The N64 was the first video game console My brother and I ever had. We LOVED IT!

I had the PC version and it was fantastic. If the N64 version is anywhere close to that I might have to pick up an old console and collect for it.

I appreciate the vintage adhesive, dust and grime on the console, controller and carts. Looks just like the one I had as a kid

It gives them a "vintage" look, doesn't it? I actually keep microfiber cloths and some 303 Aerospace Protectant right under the table in the video. But sometimes, it just makes sense to let the patina stay. :)

I still have my Nintendo 64 and I still love the games that were on it. Plus Rare was at their best when they developed for the N64. This is probably an unpopular opinion but Donkey Kong 64 was one of their best games on that console. I also loved Star Wars Episode I Racer. But one thing about the Nintendo 64 that made it inferior to the PlayStation was no full motion cutscenes. Such an example was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. But ironically enough, Resident Evil 2 also had a Nintendo 64 port and somehow Angel Studios (whom ported RE2) was able to fit a large sized game into a Nintendo 64 cartridge.

RARE was pretty much a 1st-party Nintendo publisher back then, in my opinion. 💁🏿‍♂️

LOVE the N64… I’ll never forget growing up on SNES and then seeing the 3D graphics of Zelda Ocarina of Time for the first time at a relative’s place. Absolutely breathtaking…

This was my experience too. Except I walked into a local Walmart-tyle shop to see the graphics for the first time. It was just 'wow'. The game itself exceeded expectations. Just.

Dude. Super Smash Bros. Sooo much hours of fun. Sooo many tournaments with friends. And most of my friends had PS1 and PS2, yet we would all play N64 a lot. Also, speaking of tournaments, Pokémon Stadium 2. I also spent sooo many hours within its mini-games tournament with my friends.

I always wanted an N64 even though I owned a PS1 at the time. Rumble pak, super mario 64, goldeneye, turok, ocarina of time just blew me away.

@@HollowRick I have a PS1, I don't think it has better games. A lot of people don't like JRPGS. The only games PS1 had that hold up or exceed the quality and library of N64 were Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid. In my opinion, aside from the JRPGs, every other game genre is better represented in N64. Compare coolboarders 2 to 1080 snowboarding for example. Just blown out of the water.

SNES is a "desert island" console, isn't it? Like that one system you'd pick to have with you if you were stranded on a desert island.

I was more of a PlayStation kid, but I definitely still have a fair bit of nostalgia for the N64 having played it on many occasions with family and friends. It may not have had as big of a game library as other consoles, but the games it did have were gems!

Because the graphics were AWFUL looking. I'd argue worse than the PSONE, it needed the additional RAM that came with Rogue Squadron from the start! Also, going with cartridges was a dumb idea! Could you imagine how well teh N64 would have done with CD's!!!

I do like the controller a lot (although too often the D pad and/or more buttons weren't used).

i bought into the hype when the N64 was coming out. i had it for a week and was very disappointed. so I sold it and bought a PS One. the games for the N64 just didn't appeal to me

This system will always be special to me for having the best wrestling games ever. I still play those AKI titles to this very day.

Nintendo 64 holds a very special place in my heart because of the memories i had with it playing with my siblings. Sometimes barstyle fights broke out cause of Mario Cart or Mario Party 😂

Looks like someone bought a "refurbished" N64 from DK Oldies. Comes complete with previous owners dirt.🤣 All joking aside I've never been a fan of the N64.

My childhood N64 was given to me by my oldest brother when I was about 7, the controller was already a hand me down from someone else my brother knew. My controller has some premium grime that is too nostalgic to completely clean off. It's cleaned up a bit, but I can't replace that shiny greasy controller that's been rubbed down from years upon years of use. The control stick doesn't even hold up anymore, basically unusable, it's just my favorite controller.

This was my first Nintendo console when I was a kid. Personally, I enjoy this console for nostalgia. I wouldn't consider it to be the greatest Nintendo console of all time. Though its a console I still enjoy time to time.

I was at school the september 30 when my mother succeeded to get one during the day. I invite my friend at my home the evening. I had the game Mario 64 and we rent the game Pilotwings. I didn't want to go sleep, school tomorrow 😂

If the N64 had anywhere close to the level of variety as the PS1 then there would be no reason to be a Playstation fanboy tbh lol.

My favorites were Banjo Kazooie and DK64

6:50 "it runs on an updated version of the game engine, originally used on Golden Eye...[not pictured here as it is a totally contemporaneous version running on an expensive modern pc]" Oh and by the way, N64 isn't even 64 bit. The 64 bitness that is included was a hindrance to developers for the two token instructions that used it and their first actually true 64bit console is the Switch rebrand of the Nvidia shield.

I have mixed feelings on the N64. At the time, the wrestling games and Goldeneye won me over in a big way. I was enjoying it, and at the time, the Zelda series were some of my favorite games. The tide turned for me when Ocarina of Time launched. I was 18. I reserved it, and was all-in on the hype. I picked it up at launch, had a bunch of friends come over to check it out, and... I hated it. It was so slow-paced, and the graphics felt muddy and sluggish. I tried for weeks, and just couldn't get into it. My younger brother adored it, but I just didn't like it at all. That game started my downward spiral with the system. Its library was swamped with racing games, and not even great ones. I was already digging my Saturn for the light gun games, and then I got a Playstation a few months later. I had so much more fun with my PS1 and Saturn that it fell to a distant 3rd for the generation, where it has stayed. I have tried to go back to Ocarina of Time dozens of times in the decades since, even pre-ordering Windwaker for the premium disc to see if it was a little faster and more fun, and no, it wasn't. I haven't enjoyed a Zelda since (though I haven't given A Link Between Worlds a fair shake yet) other than the classics. All that said, Super Mario 64 is one of the very best games of the generation and of all-time in my book. Graphics and camera systems have improved, but the gameplay of Mario 64 stands up to any 3D platformer that followed, even today.

We all know that SNES easily trumps the PS1 and N64. But even the N64 and it’s small library had more memorable first party and second party games like Majora’s Mask, Wave Race, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mario, Smash bros, Kirby, Pokémon, and the Rareware games. Hardly any PS1 fanboys exist because better PlayStation consoles exist, since it really is just ancient tech with games that can easily be found elsewhere xD.

Never liked the 64, man, I even got bored pretty fast playing Mario 64 but those racing games made me had to have one just to play them

The durability of this system and its games were insane i had one i spilled some oj in and the reset button was like glued in place still worked dogg literally chewed a chunk out it back right side by the bottom/side with a few cracks still worked 64.. I can tell you why I never even considered owning an N64: they lost Konami and Squaresoft as major third-party publishers. I picked the console I could play Final Fantasy on, end of story.

N64 Is amazing! The controller is just SO bad that it can be distracting.

I like a lot of the games on the N64, but couldn't stand it's controller.

N64 worlds always felt larger than PS1 ones. PS1 environments felt like playing with miniature toys while N64 felt closer to scale.

I was one of those spazz 11 year olds opening up a 64 new….not a fan of 3d except for racing games, yes I dislike mario 64

How could you mention the controllers without the thing that people hated about them the most? The analog stick wore out especially if children were playing it I lent a brand new one to my cousins for a couple of months still in box, and got it back completely whipped. The analog stick was a terrible design and you never seen 64 controllers that were more than a year old where it wasn't broken

Agreed. The sticks were quite fragile. Interesting enough, the one shown in the video isn't original to me, and the stick has held up through at least one previous owner.

The N64 was a great system.

Basically, whoever was around back then loved it. GameCube or SNES purists or people who weren’t around back then don’t like it .

The only thing that was bad about the n64 was its controller

How about mentioning a lot of the screen captures you're doing Are on an emulator that's running 3 times as fast and much higher resolution. The original games look and run much worse.

i honestly never cared about the N64 then or now. I still do not understand why the hype is so huge for it. I’m a huge Nintendo fan in-general but the 64 is just a trash can IMO.

I think it's an easy system to hate on due to the horrible hardware design choices Nintendo made. Specifically storage format (cart vs CD-ROM) and the limited cache size. These two specific decisions led to nearly every game having that dreaded blurry smeared look.

There were certainly upsides to the cartridges as well, later on some devs used it to work around the texture cache issue, because amazingly it's actually faster to access than the RDRAM main memory. PS1 wasn't really fast enough to throw around all that data for gameplay purposes anyway, it was mostly useful for cutscenes and better audio. In the same vein, despite the tendency to look blurry, it's easy to see how far ahead of the curve the N64 was in terms of raw 3D capabilities. With the help of a CRT it certainly could look impressive for the time. Unfortunately Nintendo had to shoot themselves in the foot there as well, for some reason they didn't want developers touching the RCP microcode even though it's one of the most important features of the hardware.

@@ozzyp97 Finally, someone actually gets it and doesn’t outright blame Cartridges “for holding the system back” when it was Nintendo’s stubborn nature that costed them big time with third party developers. True, they had limited capacity, but as you said, they actually helped programmers later on by avoiding RDRAM usage whatsoever despite setbacks on their cost of cartridge production, which later dropped later on the system’s lifespan.

I don't know why people hate it. I prefer its design compromises over the PS1 and Saturn. I'll take slightly blurry textures over Sony's wobbling and warping any time or the Saturn's DOS software renderer look. As for frame rates, nobody had a lot of high frame rate 3D games in those days unless they had a 3Dfx Voodoo.The Dreamcast was the first console I remember seeing where it seems like a large majority of the games had a butter smooth frame rate.

1:20 Aaaand here is where I stop watching and put a dislike. Sorry, not sorry. I'm SICK of seeing this revisionist garbage about the controller being perpetuated. NOBODY who had played with the controller at the time for more than 5 minutes had any issues about what you described unless they were trolling. The vast majority of titles from the N64 era were played by grabbing the center and left handles, and games were designed to be controlled that way, so there weren't any major issues than you wouldn't find in games from the PSOne, Saturn or even the DreamCast. That supposed dilema you mention about the remaining handle being out of reach wasn't a factor in the slightest, since no game required you to use all three at the same time. It wasn't until the double thumbstick control was fully standardized in the next generation (no, not by the Dual Shock 1. Very few games required the use both sticks simultaneously) that the N64 controller became truly obsolete. But that's not something that truly applies to the games from the system itself. That kind of argument is a meme that has no basis in reality whatsoever, and it sickens me people perpetuating it a quarter of a century later just for kicks.

While other computer companies where taken over by film makers, Nintendo stuck to games. How many ROMs can you produce for the environmental cost of a CD drive? Is this about the contacts which are less reliable than optical transmission? ( corrosion)

@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt Optical disc drives are more expensive because they’ve got plenty of moving parts in them in order to get the disc spinning. The amount of moving parts in a disc drive could even include small plastic gears versus a cartridge slot that has virtually no moving part and is just a contact. The slot could get corroded, though a disc drive could also malfunction if designed poorly or due to friction on one of the moving trays/gears in the front loading slot giving out because of age.

@@TTOOS The N64 for example was initially planned to launch at a price of $250 USD, but they decided to drop the price down to $199 to make it more competitive with Sega’s and Sony’s offerings. With an optical drive implanted, and assuming that all final specifications are kept largely the same as the N64 we actually got it would only end up bumping up the price over $400 because optical drives were expensive for the manufacturer. The PS1 for example was less powerful than the N64, but it ended up debuting at a launch price of $299 with additional memory cards needed to store saves, and even the Sega Saturn was not capable of reaching the same 3D scale of power the N64 was capable of demonstrating. It had its own limitations, mainly due to the on board texture cache which was only 4 kilobytes in size, RDRAM as the main memory being plagued with bandwidth latency and over fill rate issues with how many pixels can be displayed in a 3D screen in a given amount of time. A remedy to fill rate problems was to alter and customize software microcodes that were developed with the games in mind. The N64 was a complex machine overall largely because of hard decisions to keep costs down.

@@TTOOS I should also mention that since CDs are not able to load games on the fly without being reliant on system memory, considering ram was very limited and expensive in the mid 90s, for Nintendo to ship a CD based instead would mean certain games like goldeneye 007 would not exist, (thus having the final product at above the $400 price range). Many developers of the PS1 felt limited by the tiny amount of ram available which although it had 2MB of ram available, problem was though that games needed to be read and then written onto system memory before the game could load which results in less memory available for devs. A prime example of this is to look at Marvel vs Capcom games on the Sega Saturn compared to the PS1.
