Why are Filmers STILL Not Shooting HD?!

Спорт

Two topics for you today - what's up with political statements on skateboards? But the biggest question is - why are people still using a 90's standard definition camera for filming? Is the VX1000 really better than modern HD cameras?

I worked in the Adult Video industry (yes porn) as a Director from 2003 to 2006. We shot on VX’s. I know they were popular for shooting skating and snowboarding too. If Sony has their head out of their asses and sees this market, they could make an HD camera physically the same as the VX, with a “classic VX” filter option to turn on before you shoot to give it that golden tone.

That "golden tone" (i.e. outdated technology doing a bad job of color correction) could be easily applied in seconds in editing software.

In a sense they do. There are tons of ~$3,000 prosumer HD cameras out there, but there's no need for that in skateboarding. Back in the 90's, you needed a prosumer camera to get remotely decent looking footage, but today, any decent GoPro clone for $50+ will look fine for KZread and the features of a prosumer camera aren't useful for just filming some casual clips for KZread (things like multiple professional mic inputs, zebra lines for contrast, etc., nothing most people would even know how to take advantage of). The simple fact of the matter is there's no need to buy an expensive camera unless you're filming a multi-million dollar blockbuster film and everything needs to be PERFECT. If you just need a little more weight and a handle, get a scorpion handle for $20 on Amazon and bolt some weights to it.

I don’t think there are many grown men that don’t understand the charm of the VX1000. It seems to me to mostly be young millennials that comment on skateline videos, complaining. And I get the idea that they think people still use it “To be cool” which is of course not it at all. It has a timeless look, and it’s pretty much as simple as that. I totally preferred it to HD for a long time, and now I’m kinda in the middle and like both. But VX will never go away as long as they’re still working. I mean, why do people still shoot super 8 film, why do people still use VHS cameras? These aren’t questions of practicality. These are questions of look and style.

It mostly comes down to which muscles you have built up and have fine control over. This is why I kind of don't respect people who ALWAYS skate switch because they've basically made switch their new regular. Stance is determined by eye dominance, but which way a trick is easier all comes down to muscles in your feet/ankles/legs being built up correctly.

There are couple of Mini DV cameras with the ability to shoot Progressive, ones with more than 1 megapixel CCD's like the Sony DCR-TRV80.. When coupled with the Baby Death Lens from Century or The cheaper Opteka lens the result is, in my opinion, even better than the VX. Two main reasons: First the image gets wider when shooting in Progressive mode since the whole area of the CCD is used, second there is no interlacing, the camera records progressive (whole frames) directly to the tape thus giving clearer image.

  • @matrodmedia

I shot with a VX1000 MK1 for 15 years, but the world is moving on, while a small niche of skate filmers are not. Truth is, the biggest brands are now shooting on things like RED and other high-end, high bitrate, and sometimes raw-video-capable camera setups, along with aerial drone shots. The VX1000 will ALWAYS be extremely, extremely nostalgic for many, including myself since I had the massive blessing of being born early enough to fully experience it in a near-professional setting. I now see the bare minimum standard (in my humble opinion) to be the Panasonic HVX/HPX with a Century "Xtreme" fisheye (16:9 HD modern version of the Century "Death Lens"), with my preferred to be something a bit higher up, like a Sony FS5 with a Canon L-series 8-11mm Fisheye, and then if the budget allows, a RED on a Movi. To be completely honest however, your footage will blend together absolutely fine with most other HD footage so long as you're shooting on at least an old Canon Rebel that is 1080p @ 30fps capable, with like a Rokinon fisheye or something. Even an iPhone with one of the higher quality fisheye lenses (i.e. something from the "Moment" smartphone lens company, for instance) will absolutely do the trick as long as you have a way of keeping it stable while shooting (i.e. handheld gimbal, or a rig with a handle and something to add some extra weight to weigh it down a bit, to eliminate some of the shaking and jitteriness that comes with shooting on something as small and lightweight as a smartphone). I am thinking about doing an in-depth video on this topic (I have yet to see one on KZread in the way I want to do it), and I have been doing this for a long time in the skateboarding world, seen the skate filming industry grow from the late 90's to where it is today shooting in 4K, and feel like I could share a lot of down-to-earth insight. Let me know if anyone reading this would be into that. And if you're an up-and-coming skate filmer yourself and have any questions or want me to do some consulting work for you, drop me a line, you can DM me on instagram or something. @ matrodmedia

Get a GoPro clone and a scorpion handle and just bolt on some weights if you want it to be a little heavier to smooth out movement. Anything more expensive than that is a total waste for skateboarding unless you're shooting for a top tier professional company. I personally recommend the Firefly 7s or 8s because they're the best combination of cheap and good quality (esp the mic) and the 8s can use an external mic if you're really picky.

I think a popular misconception is that HD necessarily means wide aspect ratio. I agree that 16:9 doesn't do well with skateboarding but why not high definition 4:3? Isn't it available on modern cameras too?

  • @nunyabusiness896

    @nunyabusiness896

    6 жыл бұрын

What's wrong with 16:9? How is chopping off the sides of the image helpful? Skateboarding has movement in the horizontal plane, using a wider aspect ratio just helps ensure that you don't have the skater go out of frame. It just doesn't make sense to film in 4:3 when everyone watching will be on a 16:9 screen.

If you want to make a really nice looking video in 480p, get the newer FX1000, the lens is incredible, especially in low light, and you can use a fisheye with great results in SD or HD. It can record both on the same DV tapes. Best of both worlds for cheap. I would recommend the FX1000 to any aspiring filmer who wants some options but doesn't have tons of money. It already has a handle and a good mic attached too.

Overkill79 That has nothing to do with the camera and everything to do with the skating. I somewhat agree that older 90's videos are better because they aren't so absolutely crazy like the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater tricks pros are doing nowadays, but it doesn't change the fact I wish I could watch it all in HD. HD is not a lens or a type of filming, it's literally just better clarity, why is there so much opposition to that?

I know this video's a few weeks old, and my comment probably won't weigh in anyway, but I think HD is great for skateboarding in a way that SD never will be. For example, 50-50 a crusty, chunky ledge with a rough cracked landing in SD and it won't look like much. 50-50 that same ledge in HD and all of a sudden it becomes really sick, because you can see all the crap that the skater had to ride through. I've seen lines that wouldn't have looked out of place in a video 20 years ago, and the only reason they're legit now, is because you can see how messed up the spot actually is. It makes me wonder about some of those old videos... some of those tricks must be so much gnarlier then they look. I think using SD when HD is cheap and available is doing a disservice to the skater you're filming because the blemishes that make a spot a spot are less visible. Furthermore, you can choose to crop HD to 4:3 if that's yr thing and you somehow think yr fisheye won't look right in 16:9. But I don't get that. Most TV's and monitors are in 16:9 these days anyway. So, why shoot something that will look out of place on the screen yr viewing it on.

It's not only HD vs SD in the camera, we are talking about a camera that costed 3K when it was released, you can't compare for example the optics and the image stabilization of a VX with Go Pro or with a mobile phone video. What you should compare VX with is a camera that costs 3K today. The Hollywood industry moved to digital cameras after 2010 with the Arri Alexa the first digital camera that surpassed film in things like tonal range, color space and latitude which matter in big movie productions. That's like 20 years after digital video first appeared. What I like is to combine SD with HD in a 720p final result. SD for the fisheye and long lens zoom in and out shots. HD for slow motion and panning shots.

Also, sd cameras have smaller sensors than hd cameras, so they are more cropped and zoomed in than an HD camera. 'Also you can get a directional microphone and get much better sound than a vx has. And HD automatically means the sound quality is better because it's recorded in HD and not on a DV tape. Everything you said was so wrong. Plus ts designates that obstacle as being intended for a specific purpose, so when you go to kickflip down it there won't be another guy trying to ride up it at the same time.

Most skateboarders, being young, just aren't politically minded, so politically inspired deck graphics are rare - unless we're talking skate industry politics, as with Anti-Hero or Consolidated. Even in the late 80s/early 90s, any political board graphics were really just a way to stand out among the glut of skate companies, not to mention that since the industry has traditionally been based in California, any messages would be liberal-progressive by default. Today, though, that liberal-progressive consensus is crumbling. Also, anyone can start a board company. don't see a pro-Trump white nationalist skate company anytime soon, if only because they'd get shit on so bad by the rest of the skate industry that they'd never see daylight again. Then again, there's a market for everything and going by the comment sections alone, I'm sure there's enough angry racists who also happen to skate for such a company to break even. Nazis, like hipsters, are suckers for limited-edition collectables.

  • @yellowdartsnobrd1080

VX1000 is good for wine footage. Also, skateboard graphics are really not that controversial, politically. Maybe you think the Donald Trump board is if you're a 13 yr old sticking it to your uptight parents but for adults in the real world they're not offensive. Nobody cares. Swastikas would be offensive, as if we were outlaw bikers (or Duane Peters), but to the best of my knowledge no model was ever made with them (but I may be wrong here), but in general companies seem to censor themselves real fast, pulling boards from shelves if they're controversial or deny a design before production.

bitrate is only one attribute, though. Even with a good de-interlacing filter in editing software, you just aren't capturing as much image data and what is there is much muddier than HD. People were just always told that the VX was the best camera and never learned any more than that. I don't think I've ever met a skate filmer that really knew anything real about camera technology, the just latched on to whatever was hyped the most. VX makes bad footage compared to even cell phone cameras, there's no reason to use it.

  • @BenJonesVideographer

DerekSiems oh there's no denying that there is less information captured on a VX then most other SD cameras and obviously HD cameras. • @nunyabusiness896

There is no reason to use a VX in 2017, period. I remember back in the early 2000's getting my first skate DVDs and watching them on my computer and wondering why the image was so much worse than the movies on DVD...it was because it was interlaced 480i VX garbage instead of actual progressive scan. Even back then I didn't like the VX, so I certainly don't like it now. 480i just does not look good on progressive scan HD screens and that's what everyone uses nowadays. Not only is the actual resolution low, but the compression algorithms streaming sites use (where 99% of content is viewed) further distort the image with blocky compression. The best VX footage looks worse than something from an iPhone 3GS on a progressive scan screen. Then there's the matter that I think the mega death lens look is overrated and kind of irritating as it distorts the tricks so much you can't even tell how big the tricks actually are. Modern HD filming feels so much more natural like you're a bystander watching the trick go down instead of shoving your face 3" from someone's board. Death lens filming was a tryhard technique that needs to die off. Don't even get me started on the workflow. Tape is AWFUL to edit from, it takes FOREVER to get clips. Modern HD cameras give you nice, neat little clips that you can compile in seconds. Tape can take hours to comb through for makes. Cost isn't even a factor here as a totally fine Firefly7s ($70) or 8s ($110) shoots great video and good audio and the 8s can use an external mic if you're really picky and you can add a scorpion handle for like $20 and it's the same form factor as a VX. Or, you know, just use your cell phone with a fisheye lens case like most people do. There's just no reason to use a VX anymore. If we were still using CRT TVs I could possibly see a sliver of a point to it, but there's nothing "nostalgic" about interlaced, compressed footage on a progressive scan TV. That's not what you grew up with and it makes no sense to keep using a VX to give that vastly different result than the way it looks on a CRT. Get over yourselves, the VX belongs in the trash.
