You are so right about the "my rights" thing, holy shit. I never knew how to articulate it but that sums it up perfectly. Street skating in Ireland isn't a big thing cause the culture isn't here as much, and soo many of the streets are cracked/ bumpy/ hilly.

  • @rhodamarquez6539

Totally get with you on the many cracked/bumpy/hilly environments Ireland skaters unfortunately skate. Galway, Belfast, Cork and Dublin are where the skate culture of Ireland is found, Dublin being the California/New York(?) for Irish skating. It's difficult (especially with the weather, don't get me started on how some month's weather is terrible for skating) but we get the job done

I also think the police are a big reason why skating is so anti in Us. People think they have a instant solution to any problem by calling the cops. The police haven’t functioned like that since the 1900’s, realistically police response time is super slow, the incompetent cops only end up escalating the situation and not actually contributing to an actual solution whenever street skating is actually happening.

I live in germany and I run my own company. There is a street spot below my office and I can watch the skaters from my window. When I have a stressful day and I hear the skateboard noises it literally makes me smile and relax instantly. When I'm on a phone call I usually stand up and enjoy watching them. The only thing that really annoys me is the steady stream of self proclaimed rappers that film their music videos with super loud (and bad) music. Generally speaking: Skaters good. Loud music bad. The old city centers are usually not a good place to skate anyways as they often are paved with cobblestone and there are no straight rails/ledges. Germany is certainly no paradise for skaters, especially the south people are very performance-oriented and they feel offended by someone having fun during the day. Although it probably takes longer until they'ld actually confront the skaters.

I just played through Thrasher a few weeks ago... still one of my favourite games of all times. I still find the trick system awesome and the game still feels great to me. I remember when it came out I rejected it for not being like Tony Hawk, but a friend gave it a chance and forced me to play it. Glad he did. I almost view this game as the first in the Skate series lol. Also, cool insight into why Americans hate on street skating. I am Canadian, and even in my small town we would get kicked out of places all the time. Oddly enough, church properties seemed the most accepting. Try to skate the stairs at the mall or hospital you would maybe have 10 mins to land your shit and get out. Now as an old man (34 if my math is correct... feel 80), I can maybe see it from a different perspective. If I owned a store, I am not sure I would want people skating the handrail at the entrance. If the skaters are being respectful and not impacting business, then there should be no issue though. In a few skate videos you will see them actually cutting rails and shit to make them more skateable. I think that is a bit too far. Anyways, awesome video as usual!

And stuff was expensive. You nailed it with a lot of skater hate in the US. So many good spots are banks, office areas/ skyscraper entrances, schools, college campuses, public parks, etc. All places where regular ppl are trying to eat, study, get to whatever, and not be annoyed by the loudest slapping noise ever. We don't hear that 😂. We hear oh shit he made that line!!! And proceed to make even more noise.

I think it’s less “American Entitlement” and more like because like it or not Street Skating destroys property. Which then the city has to pay for, or in the case of someone’s private property you don’t have the right to be there unless invited. Also I can totally understand why people would be annoyed with skaters flying by them, or over them or into them. Like walking up to your dentist office and getting bodied by a dude jumping off a 20 ft marble ledge is probably not fun for anyone involved. There are definitely times where it’s stupid to get mad at skaters in public but still. Don’t get me wrong I love Street Skating but I can understand why it makes people mad.

I think there's another factor. In the US, skaters have a long history of destroying property and being jerks to people. I even saw a video recently where a guy celebrated landing his trick by smashing a window with his board. There's even the old adage, "skate and destroy." A lot of skaters are just crappy people. But that's obviously not the only factor. I took my four year old son to a church parking lot a few weeks ago to ride his bike and they kicked us out. It's just ridiculous.

Yes, it originated in the west coast so there definitely will be more skaters out there, but in general, you're going to find skaters out in the cities. Rarely in small towns since there's not many places to skate, and just the culture in small rural towns is totally different. They'd see skaters as punks and thugs.

Let's be honest, tons of skaters are assholes, smoke weed, tag shit, destroy property, give strangers attitude, etc. And this has been going on in the US for about 35 years. There was nothing comparable to this in Europe

Most of us here know the protocol.....charge a spot, skate for 5-10 minutes and move on....we weren't drinking and partying at spots.....much less tagging them up. The biggest scum bags ( and I mean this is a loving way) were always skaters from Europe. You obviously never hung out with anyone other than rollerbladers, because you understand nothing about street skating in the United States. The reason you got attitude is because you are a loser in life...if you were hanging out with dudes that stayed at spots "to smoke weed and act like assholes", you weren't hanging out with street skaters....no street skater is going to hate on another skater unless they are a jackass, that is why you ended you hanging out with a bunch of fruit booters

I'm from Finland but I've pretty much lived in Germany all my life. It's pretty easy going spot-wise, but if the spot happens to be important (architecturally speaking) there will be no skating there. Concerning churches: I've skated many a churchyard in my days and specifically, the Dom cathedral in Cologne was a HUGE spot for 20+ years. It was definitely tolerated for ages but you'll get fined if you skate there on a wrong day. During the Corona days, it was actually a little bit skateable again (I guess people had better things to do than walk around in front of the cathedral). Prague was pretty chill every time I went there but even the infamous Stalin Plaza has been on the verge of closing at least twice that I know of. MACBA in Barcelona and Barcelona, in general, is skate heaven, but even that city got struck by heavy policing round about a decade and a half ago, maybe. Every time I went there it was okay, but if I were you, visit these spots as soon as you can. Who knows how long we'll have them. Long story short: We can't take spots here for granted. The more popular they are the more endangered they become. At least that's what I've seen happening here.

I 've got trasher when it came out when I was a kid and I remember feeling really disapointing at first, wishing to have choose THPS1 instead. But after mastering the control it became my favorite game and while enjoying the thps series at the same time, I've always come back to trasher since there was always rooms to improve giving the overall difficulty. And I still playing it, I love how the control feels in your hand with the playstation controler and I didn't find any other game giving me the same button satisfaction. But yeah, the steering while preparing some tricks is a big default and I don't see a lot ways to improve it. Ea skate games have better and clever controls but it doesn't feel the same.

I used to enjoy smoking with the security guards and watching the skating on the property of the bank HQ I used to work at (UK). Never a problem, and that spot has been in loads of parts. To be fair there are quite a few skate stoppers in the UK though - that particular city is pretty chilled.

Hey dear....hope you're fine! It's me...Chris from Germany...at first, thx for the awesome shirt of your collection, I really wear it often I can...I love it! And the 2nd thing I want to say is, the thing about the first real "pro deck"...I got my first in the basement...it's a Zorlak Mini logo in red...I promising....that thing was awesome...I buy it when I was 14 years old (now I'm 33)....and it broke 2016 because of a friend of me, he ripped it to hard....it is not totally broken...it got a crack...so I decided not to drive longer with it! I would everytime buy the same deck again...it was a 8" deck...everything was perfect for me...never found a deck that was so perfect for me! When I was 18....it was felt in Water...it was completely wet...so I put it for 5 years in my basement....later I found it with the original setup when I was 14....Royal Axles...bones wheels etc....and skated it with my weight of nearly 100kg (200 pounds I guess)...and ripped it hard....nothing! When I was 14 that must be 2000 or something....a amazing time with amazing brands!

Street is fun but the fact is, if someone politely asks you to leave, you don’t get cheeky and aggravate the situation. I understand if someone comes out guns blazing (metaphorically of coarse) telling you to f**k off then the situation could turn heated quick. People who have the time to street skate during the work day probably have the time to street skate when everyone’s gone home from work as well. I wish everyone could have more time in their life to enjoy whatever makes them happy.

I would assume the top reasons for anti-street skate would be property damage and insurance. Nobody wants their property to look like shit, especially if its their work and need it to look presentable. If someone were to get hurt somewhere, insurance companies look for reasons to sue places. "Oh there's a no skateboarding sign? Well, they didn't know they weren't supposed to skate there." Boom, whoever owns the property has to pay medical bills.

It’s not about liability- property law generally says you can sue if you’re injured in the course of normal behavior, not because you hurt yourself skateboarding. People believe stupid shit but most of these building owners probably know better. They think of skaters as a nuisance because people are lame.

I think you are correct. Also think that European cultures have a much more open culture when it comes to creative use of public spaces and tolerance of people expressing themselves. In the US, it feels like like you are supposed to be traveling from point a to point be, or else shopping, when you are in public. I don't think the commons have been as encircled by capitalist attitudes in Europe.

I think the "my rights" thing is accurate, but I wouldn't downplay property damage and liability. Perhaps I should say it like "property damage" and "liability" because those concerns from non skaters could be overblown. I would be really curious about skateboarding's anti-authority angle throughout history in the US.

I live in the UK and here is hard too, I have lived in Italy for about 20 years and it was hard too over there. People in general, security guards and police officers just don't understand Skateboarding and don't like people Skateboarding on urban grounds and buildings. The only places where no one cares in the UK are some big mall's car parks just because the car park is so huge and the security dudes patrol only inside the store and near by the entrances. But anywhere else you can't Skate longer than 20 minutes as some police officer, security, or Karen show up with that typical attitude and kick you out.

I didnt belive the hate people got on the US against skaters, but with all those "Kareens VS Skaters" on the youtube man, fuck, how the actual fuck. they even complain if you skating on the actual street, on a park, on a Fucking Skatepark

I'm from the USA I'm 34 I'm had a slipped axle befor when I was young. First board was a nash from toysrus I think and first real board was a maple. I hate how skaters are treated here and can't it almost be turned around on people and them making my day harder or impediment of my rights to skate? I remember telling off cops saying I'm not doing drugs or committing any crimes I'm doing something productive that doesn't heart anyone. Anyway I got sick of fighting so ill just skate a park instead.

14:20 ish... Hmm, while I don't disagree, I don't think they where thinking of say suburbs where there is no signage and it is just people being offended. I think they where more asking about the locations that have the signs No bike/pets/skateboards allowed, and in those locations it is more of two things "you are keeping away my customers costing me sales" and "I don't want to get sued when you injure yourself on my property so I am going to post these actions are not allowed so you can not sue when you end up with rebar through your rib cage". In like the culdasac areas with the wild Karens attacking kids for having fun, yeah 100% agree, but those are not areas marked off as "No skating allowed", and I think the question was more towards why areas have those "No Bikes/pets/skateboards/Rollerblade" signs, and that would be more of a "you are scaring away potential customers who might think you young hoodlins are thugs" and "I don't want to get sued when you hurt yourself" and not so much of anything else other then maybe "I don't want to have to scrub the concrete where your wheels scuffed up my sidewalk making it look like a unsafe place to be to potential customers, you are making me do extra work and I don't like that".

I already know the answer. Should be obvious. So you can be charged for a felony for "destruction of property over 250" here in massachusetts if you've got priors. Like I was a writer so I could get in some trouble for skating and or altering some spots. Trespass is a felony in some places as well Insane laws old pre inflation. What was 250 then is worth way more today. Some people think property is worth more than life.
