Join us as we look at "who" and "why" everyone wants to move to Mexico. Mexico's economy has been booming! The mighty Mexican Peso has crushed the American and Canadian Dollars, along with the Euro. Inflation is still high, and the cost of living has skyrocketed in Mexico.
So much so that all the most favorable neighborhoods, destinations, and towns are now on par with some of the most expensive cities in Canada and the United States. So why still move there? What is the allure? It has to be more than just the warm weather! The day of cheap tacos and margaritas is done!
It is the land of newfound opportunity. Even Mexicans who became Americans are now returning to Mexico! International companies are flocking to Mexico. Mexico is now the United States' #1 trading partner to the United States, knocking out Canada's position.
Even though the country is on the rise, so many local Mexican people are being driven out of their communities. There is an underlying resentment and dissatisfaction from the locals towards the expats.
"Out Gringos"
Migration and affordability are global issues that are not unique to Mexico. They are happening everywhere, including in Canada.

If you only stay or visit the well known and more expensive cities and colonias in Mexico you shouldn't be surprised by the high prices. Polanco is often referred to as the Beverly Hills of Mexico and isn't where the average Mexican lives. Only the most wealthy citizens and immigrants/foreigners can afford to live there and other places like Roma Condesa. Cabo is the most expensive city to live in all of Mexico. The roughly 30,000 Americans who moved to Mexico between 2019 and 2021 are hardly enough to drastically cause the prices to rise causing gentrification in a country of 180 million citizens. A lot of Mexicans are making better money than in the past along with merchants and landlords raising their prices. I moved here a few years ago from a more expensive suburb of LA California called Calabasas and am able to live a high quality of life on less than $1200us per month a mile from the beach. Where I live isn't considered as one of least expensive places to live but it's not considered as one of the more expensive places to live either. This morning after a surf and a jog along the beach I ate a lunch of pastor tacos at $14 pesos each ($0.83us) and I often go to get my favorite fresh caught fish tacos con todo for $27 pesos each ($1.61us) I have an organic fruit, vegetable and juice stand right across the street where avocados run about $0.48us and a liter of fresh squeezed juice is about $2.0us. I don't live in an Americanized colonia and don't shop the gringo markets like Walmart or Costco, I shop where the locals shop. and purchase Mexican brand products. Buena suerte!

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience. I can’t say we felt unsafe but we did feel this underlying current of dissatisfaction and frustration by the locals. I can understand that because people have been pushed out. What we did notice though, a lot heavily armed police presence every where in the more gentrified areas. It felt kind of uncomfortable. The level of corruption is everywhere not just Mexico. Our country is a disaster and that is why we left. Now we don’t really live anywhere 🤣 We love Mexico and we will always come to visit places like Cabo but we won’t purchase a home here.

@@jillpemberton1434 Appreciate the response- and your videos which are well done, very positive, and have excellent information! What I am looking for is the approximate comparative income of the local population to determine the comfort zone of living in the area on my income. (I need to go to Martinique and find out if living there is an option, compared to a town in Mexico like Xtapa Ziuantano.) There are many videos of people supposedly living wonderfully on a very low budget, which I doubt would suit my wife and I. My goal is to be realistic, conservative, and comfortable when making a choice. Your honest intro video on how you began you journey really impacted me, and was another affirmation that my planning should be accelerated. Thanks for taking the time to comment! As a retired couple from Canada, the places that we would consider is on par with the US and Canada - there are cheaper areas but I would not want to live those areas. We went out the other night and a pizza for one person was $30.00, it was an average place nothing fancy- this is more than in Canada. When it comes to groceries fruits and vegetables are cheaper in Mexico but olive oil, peanut butter are so so expensive! We have been travelling the world, slow travel by staying a month -3 months in one place. Honestly it’s cheaper than buying a place and being stuck. Everything that you own, owns a piece of you. We joined Trusted House Sitters and now we look after homes around the world and our accommodations is free! We will be doing videos on some of our upcoming stays…. Should be fun!

However, we wanted to compare it to more of where the expats have settled and closer to those communities, The video is more about living here as an expat rather than visiting. In Cabo and parts of Mexico City we found these areas to be very expensive and on par and sometimes even more to Canada and the US - especially Cabo. Yes if you go to the some of the markets developed for expats - you pay much more verses going to La Merced market but many foreigners won't go to La Merced. The police look like SWAT Teams …I have never seen anything like that except in the Philippines. It kind of freaks me out because they are so so heavily armed. In Canada restaurants, stores and malls are not guarded by the police. They have some security guards and they are unarmed. The police carry a handgun only. It’s a catch 22 because crime in Canada is out of control. I am in Victoria BC Canada today and do I feel safe ? No, I don’t! There are so many drugged people and homeless people every where.
