As a Mexican citizen, I may not speak for everyone of course, but we don’t mind foreigners to come and find homes here. But it seems that almost every US citizen who comes here and promotes how cheap it is and basically invites everyone who can’t afford the US to immigrate here. Well you may not care but that is basically damaging the economy here. It’s gentrifying Mexico and the locals can’t afford to buy homes or rent. Like I said we don’t mind but the promotion of how cheap it is to live here disregards what people can afford because of what is normal for Mexicans to earn here. What you consider cheap for you may not be for most of Mexico.

Gentrification is real down here. The mexican peso doesn't have the same buying power as the dollar so there are so many places in the country that are seeing a huge spike in prices which become almost impossible for the people who live there. Since covid, a lot of americans are coming to live here since they work remotely and they don't have a desire to take in the culture and be part of the mexican community, they simply want to save money. In the long run this doesn't seem good to most mexicans. It´s a free country though, I just wish our government would do something to mitigate the adverse effect this has on the locals.

I’m a big fan of foreigners visiting Mexico but not so much on them living here, especially Americans, don’t really mind other foreigners. Americans come to other countries and expect their culture to change because of them coming there, not to mention the gentrification they impose on these towns/cities. One perfect example I could think of is when I was in a friend’s house in San Miguel with my family celebrating christmas and we had these American neighbors, they started threatening us and telling us they will call the police if we didn’t stop the noise, keep in mind this was in CHRISTMAS and the whole town was celebrating. They started acting like the average american karens calling the police for a minor noise next home… Honestly we have widely different cultures and if you’re coming here to live here, make sure to respect the culture and the place you’re living in. This is not Boise, Idaho this is a whole different country… This also applies the other way around, I have the least amount of respect for Mexicans not respecting American culture when they go there to live too

We relocated to Morelia, Michoacan two years ago. My wife is a Mexican citizen and I am from Reno, Nevada. We sold everything we owned, furniture and cars. We packed five suitcases, and boarded the plane. We spent one month in Mexico City, with her family before going to Morelia to be with more family. The reason we came to Mexico is because I retired, and the cost of living was becoming unbearable in the states. My wife is ineligible for retirement payments from either Mexico, or the US due to her age. We're able to live famously on my Social Security income alone. We've been able to rent a beautiful home for 8000 pesos ($400 USD) and our entire monthly outgo, including utilities is less than $600.00. We're able to eat out at will, travel, and save easily. The people, culture, architecture, and of course, the food, are all amazing. Easily the best move I've ever made. We've never been victimized by any crime, and I've never been made to feel unwelcome. VIVA MEXICO 🇲🇽

To Americans moving to Mexico. If you are working remote for an American company and you want to rent long term for $700usd a month (usually a 500 to 1000 sq ft loft or 2-3 bedroom house in a sketchy neighborhood) it makes sense to move to Mexico. Hopefully your American remote job allows for you to leave your country. If you don't have a remote jobs, how will you have sustainable living at $2,500usd per month, which is recommended in order to get permanent residency? If you think you are going to buy a house, time share, luxury rental and use it as an airbnb, the Municipal in San Miguel de Allende just passed a law that you have to pay the exploitive price of $45,000mx per year $2,500usd for a permit just to run only 1 rental on any digital platform. You will also be required to pay 20% of each rental or booking to State and another 20% t to Federal. If you think you are going to make money off of a rental, long term, underground style/cash only, you will be in competition with all the hundreds of expats and Mexicans who are also renting rooms in places like San Miguel. If you are an artist moving to San Miguel there is a lot of competition, over 200 galleries, most commercial artists, who pay to play and there are months where some of the galleries don't sell or sell very little, because San Miguel is a small town and not Mexico City or Monterrey. San Miguel needs other types of jobs outside of tourism, like technology. If you get a work permit to work in Mexico for a Mexican business, expect to be paid 1/3 less than American jobs. Not trying to be negative. But after living more than 20 years in Mexico, I wanted to give a reality check, so those of you who really want to move here, can prepare financially for your future.

We are retiring to Mexico in a few months. The first two places we eliminated from our list of possible cities were San Miguel de Allende and the Lake Chapala area. To each his own but what we did not want was an expat enclave with higher prices and culturally USA-light. We speak Spanish, have lived abroad before, and want a truly Mexican cultural experience.

Also, can you tell us the name of the restaurant you stated was the best food and guacamole you had there? We love to stay and eat at the very same places as you two did! I am Mexican and this type of social movements, which for the foreigner who can afford to live, has become a problem for the locals due to the increase of costs in the places where they come to stay. It is good that they come as tourists to our country but when they come to live here it is a threat to the life of the local people who cannot compete with their capital and we have to move to the most marginalized places.

We've been undecided about Portugal vs Mexico forever. Mexico and it's people are vibrant. One feels alive. Portugal on the other hand, is beautiful but is a bit sleepy and unmotivating the culture melancholic. It's also getting so expensive and not worth what you get. In Mexico the homes are spectacular and significantly more affordable.

Hi there! I had originally came to your channel when we were considering expat living in Portugal. We had decided to shift our focus to Mexico; mainly because we still have 3 of our 4 parents alive and it would be best that we are closer to the US. And, here, I see you two are in Mexico now! Bonus!! I need to get caught up on your Mexico series. We have done 2 exploratory trips to Mexico since September; one to Mazatlan and one to Mexico City. We generally are looking for a Centro type life style where e can walk to everything….and there is a ton of stuff going on every day. And, we are live music fans; either a gringo band or a host nation band…it doesn’t matter at all. We left Mazatlan still preferring their Centro. But, for Mexico City, the Centro didn’t do it for us. Don’t get me wrong, the buildings were incredible. Maybe it was the extreme hustle bustle were we didn’t feel a community feel. We found that down in Coyoacan. Ironically, the big expat areas of Poland, Roma, and Condesa didn’t do it for us. But….in Coyoacan, we felt like we could befriend the locals in that area. This spring, we are planning to go see Oaxaca. My wife’s aunt goes there yearly and it would be awesome to visit with her….or maybe we do a joint venture on a place. And though I have generally discounted the mega gringo spots of San Miguel or Ajijic, I think we should visit at least on of those spots. Your video here of San Miguel is incredible! Safe travels!

another excellent video! I was worried at first that you were going to say the reason was only because of the lower prices. but of course its about quality of life and freedom vs our "more advanced countries" where everything is getting to be soulless and joyless. everything is about safety and corporatism and it is literally destroying our humanity. we are nothing but consumers and tax payers back there. in Mexico the human spirit is free to thrive and you can make many more decisions for yourself... like drinking water out of a puddle in the middle of a field! or having an entire family of 5 people on a motorcycle with no helmets! I've stayed in about 15 different places in Mexico so far but didnt go to San Miguel yet. it looks amazing. I have a Mexican girlfriend who works as an English teacher in Guadalajara so I have made this city home for now. its a very civilized mix of traditional and modern.

You are right about freedom! is probably another thing that any American or Canadian is gonna experience in Mexico, I’ve seen videos of Americans living in Mexico saying how at the beginning, you probably won’t notice, but as time passes you will feel more “free”, in many aspects, one aspect is that in Mexico you are not over regulated, you don’t need permissions to build a house, or to add rooms, or to put a little business in front of your house or to have a hotdog cart , ir if you have your family in the back of an open truck, or if you want to have a henhouse and the rooster starts singing, the police won’t come at your door. that’s what comes to my head but there’s plenty of examples.

San Miguel is such a beautiful place. Your video captured it very well, but it would take hours to show all of the many beautiful places in that town. I really appreciate your photography and editing. Extremely well done. Please let me know what editing program you use. Thanks, and Dios te bendiga. (God bless you!)

I'm sure the local Mexicans are super happy with a couple of Euro millionaires buying up all the real estate and inviting all their friends.
