Why Alpine’s 2024 F1 car is deceptive
Спорт
Alpine has launched a deceptively different 2024 car that needs to fire some life back into Renault’s stuttering works F1 programme.
With key weaknesses to overcome beyond the car limitations that made Alpine’s 2023 challenger inconsistent and only a sporadic nuisance to F1’s top teams, there’s a lot riding on the A524 and how some wider changes at Alpine will play out.
Alpine’s 2024 F1 car was launched alongside its Hypercar challenger for the World Endurance Championship in a more understated affair than last year’s extravagant reveal, which we hope will be a sign of Renault letting this team prioritise substance over style.
We’ve seen the car in render form AND up close at the launch itself, here's what we've learned.

It's not a shocking thing to do and at the end of the day probably better for the management overall. But I'll definitively miss the Clio RS or Megane RS @@AnonTriple

This year and the next are absolutely *pivotal* for Alpine's F1 future; because 2026 is when engine suppliers will diversify again to a level not seen since 2008 with both Sauber and Aston Martin set to benefit with new works engine deals so if Alpine is not clearly ahead, or at the very least consistently in-step with Aston Martin then they could be in serious trouble; especially since at the start of the current engine regs cycle Renault had the weakest performance of the three engines, and Honda's shambolic early attempts only saved face until Honda got their act together with Red Bull.

im surprised you guys missed the vertical inlet a la the 2023 ferrari, blended in with the sidepod inlet.
Lower wishbone is also better aligned with the flow from the sidepod. Suspension arms are terrible aerodynamically, so anything you can do to get them to work with the flow will have some impact. Like improving the gas mileage on a gas guzzler, a little can go a decent way.

The reason the weight of the paint is a significant factor is because the cars are huge.
They need to set a limit for how much of the car's chassis can be carbon fibre or just mandate that all cars be painted
The fact that RedBull last year had no exposed carbon but beat the competition easily tells us that this measure of weight saving is absolutely pointless if your aerodynamics or power unit is bad.

Red Bull had some plain carbon on the lower part of the car, but indeed plenty of paint. Shame that Alpine don't see French Racing Blue colours as important branding, but it is up to them and their marketing goals really. McLaren drastically improved mid season, initially Aston started better than Mercedes using their engine, rear suspension and wind tunnel so anything is possible. One flaw is the Alpine engine lacks power. As I understand it, there was an effort by the team to allow the engine to be improved under special circumstances but it was denied. If the suspension improvements work, that will make a big difference. Everyone is headed towards the "anti dive" set up to get their floor to work more efficiently and be easier on tires. There's a real possibility that the dark horse to ruin everyone's season is Racing Bulls. They could appear from nowhere. If they basically roll out last year's RB19, using real RB19 parts, that car would be instantly potent. The real weakness would the driver pairing, but Yuki and Danny had a few good races towards the end of last year. One thing's for sure, the field is tightening so hopefully we'll see some good races this season.

There needs to be a rule on a minimum paint weight on different parts of the car. Ensure aesthetics are retained and teams then won't get tactical with paint for weight balance
this is completely deceptive and i believe four of the teams currently the using carbon exposed look without any paint 🤔
Must be said definitely compromise the front nose and side pods inlets. Potentially have to update and adapt it and do better job. Definitely in that regard on back foot why the car is carbon fibre entirely maybe because the new nose and side pods add too much estimated weight. 🤔🤷 I don't know? Just what I was thinking?
Pat Fry’s criticism was definitely cutting. That’s said, with all the new investors recently, I can’t imagine they will tolerate treading water for too long. I think they could be an interesting watch moving forward.
To all newer fans you should remember this F1 liveries in the past is not like this... It is fully painted
Unpopular opinion: I think it makes the cars look WAY better with exposed carbon and the livery colors taking second to the carbon.
Referring to the engine regulation penalty taking a new engine should not count towards the allowance if you suffer a dnf as a result of and engine failure. This would allow teams to run at a higher rate knowing they won’t have to suffer a potential dnf and grid penalties later in the season
This has aged well.
Mark my words Williams and Stake or whatever that team is called going to finish ahead of alpine
Alpine is the mountain literally, that must over for under mid teams to inter the top field although the Alpine it self never moves from there.
Yeah, F1 should probably tighten its livery rules in order for drivers, and now teams, to be more identifiable. 1. Have a minimum non-carbon coverage. It adds weight, sure, but it’s the same for everyone. 2. Force teams to have significant differences between cars so they can be identified immediately. Ever since drivers started having intricate helmet designs that don’t render well on TV, and change them like it’s fast fashion, it’s been hard to identify competitors, which is subpar in a commercial, personality-driven sport. The T cam isn’t sufficient. I get that the nose might be tricky given they do get changed during races, but maybe rear wing, halo, or even full on reverse colors (like NA team sports have a solid and light jersey variants). 3. Increase number size. It should be blatant.
These reg changes be crazy, who knew space ships were street legal now
Personally the bare carbon is very clean with the current liveries, maybe if F1 didn't ban tobacco sponsors, we'd have a lot more crazy liveries like the 90s had...
is it me or has his voice picked up an octave and is really fast. I think we've moved beyond caffeine.
That car is flatter than the budget paddock ciders, go Alfredo!
Require all cars to meet a minimum weight of paint so we can have colourful cars without anyone being dissadvantaged.
From 4'29" in the video to 6'58", a good over 2 minutes talked about Renault/Alphine's behind the scene leadership structure/politics then we'll know how good this team is heading to.
What the car needs now is the lateral diffusers disguised as floor edge, to balance high-speed rear suction to the floor with a bit of escape valve through the sides, avoiding the back-bouncing and distributing the suction to the center, better for braking stability, if the loss at the rear can be controlled when braking
A topic that I'd really like to hear The Race talkabout is the body weight of the drivers. I mean, if they're allgoing to black carbon to save weight - does that mean that someone like Tsunoda has a kg advantage purely due to this size. How tight are the margins? Paint vs human weight? 🤔
Where's the Williams video.?
The FIA should make a rule that each car has to have a certain amount of paint on it. That will stop teams from making their cars all black. If a team wants their car to be black, they can use black paint instead of leaving the carbon exposed.
Pretty soon, every car on the grid will be a native flat black, and Sky will just superimpose the individual livery digitally during the broadcast. Then the teams can sell different livery rights in every different broadcast region.
The fia should introduce a rule that requires a minimum percentage of the cars to be painted.
I think the exposed carbon should be limited team identification is the most important part of an f1 and sponsor partnerships
The among us sound aka the DBZ sound
If it’s true that Renault are finally leaving the F1 team alone, then it’s good knows. But the Renault board needs to be patient because the F1 team needs the space to make mistakes.

@gpaje

No, actually they said that they were down 30hp, the FIA said they were down maybe 20hp and said it wasn't enough to let them fix it.
Renault had all of 2014-2021 to get their engine sorted. Ferrari went the smart way and gained lots of performance so they could still iron out the reliability through the "engine freeze" period. Its no excuse to come up with now that they still are lacking in power and reliability. If Honda managed to go from backmarker to champions in 4 years alone it says that Renault have been napping
I’m amazed at how often this line that that performance will now be achieved because corporates within a car company now won’t be interfering with the race team organisation. Seriously, have we not known this since Jaguar sold to Red Bull at the beginning of 2005?!?! Since Toyota pulled out at the end of 2009?!? Distinctly remember the press going gaga over the new management structure implemented at Ferrari under Binotto being a return to the Todt-era and how amazing it would be. All it did was produce illegal cars and others that were slower than Mercedes and Red Bull. As Newey showed at Red Bull, the key is the people and the talent they bring to a team.
