Why Ferrari's 2024 F1 car is a risky outlier

Спорт

Ferrari's "completely revamped" 2024 F1 car has broken cover and there's one area it has kept the same that leaves Ferrari as a risky outlier compared to its main rivals.
The new Ferrari SF-24 is described by technical director Enrico Cardile as a "big departure" from Ferrari's first two cars of the ground effect era that started in 2022.
And Ferrari's putting a huge emphasis on its aerodynamic work turning it into a title contender, prioritising that over a new suspension direction that would bring it in line with its rivals. Will that pay off, or has it baked in a fundamental performance limitation?

The strongest trait of the previous two cars was always its excellent mechanical grip and traction out of slow corners. It makes sense to retain the pullrod rear suspension if the possible aerodynamic gains from switching to pushrod just don't offset that advantage of the existing mounting, and instead work around the suspension architecture instead (which it seems they have done extensively)

Yes there were some mistakes after the midseason break, we could discuss Leclerc strategy on Singapore, although that one I think they were with their hands tied, and Sainz strategy at Abu Dhabi, even if the car was damaged from Vegas yet, but after Spain, they actually did pretty well strategy wise. Ferrari have created a whole new aerodynamic platform with the short time given, that is very impressive in itself, clearly they have a plan and its clear this car will see evolution throughout the season because they arent constrained to development unlike last year. Theyve added their own innovations and if they can keep the good traits from last year and fix everything wrong from last year theyd be on course to at least be definite 2nd or even give Redbull trouble at some races this season, they deserve full credit to what theyve done

@@kavirajnosib4648 Pretty sure Ferrari did not finish 2nd in the second half. McLaren had been more often on the podium than Ferrari in the second half and had overall the stronger car. Ferrari had the edge on straightline speed over McLaren. Third fastest ahead of Mercedes yes. A big help there was also AM screwing up their car development massively. Yes McLaren had more upgrades, but they knew before the launch already the car was garbage. They didn't get the car ready for launch and started the first 8 races driving around at the back. From all the teams (excluding RB because they didn't really need to change much), they understood the car the best and their upgrades worked pretty much spotless. In the last 14 races McLaren managed 7 P2 and 2 P3 once they deployed their upgrades. Yes Ferrari managed a win, but 3 P2 and 5 P3. The win wasn't because the car was so great. The win was simply because the RB was garbage on that track and a masterclass strategic drive from Sainz. That's what gave them the victory. If Sainz doesn't have the presence of mind to drive that way, he ends up P3 at best. Its not like 2022 when Ferrari won races on actual pace. The only thing the victory showed is that the best race strategy personnel at Ferrari is their race driver. The biggest question will be anyway if they fixed their tyre deg or not.

The most important thing was how Ferrari was able to adapt their mechanical platform, they also fixed their tyre deg issues at the end of the season as well if you compare the Conservative race of Singapore to the flat out constant attack and defence of Charles at Vegas. If Ferrari were able to improve the car so much by changing setup imagine what they can do with a car that unlocks development in multiple key areas, the question is wether the Ferrari will be able to keep a stable platform and not fall off like Aston Martin or plateau like Mclaren

I don't fully understand the negative behind keeping the pull-rod setup in the back. You can make both work depending on how the geometry is laid out. The only negative is that it may take away some design freedom to the diffuser depending on how things are laid out in conjunction with the gearbox. I think this is a little over stated by THE RACE here. Just because everyone else goes one way doesn't mean its wrong for Ferrari to go this path... it comes down to the entire package working together and teams have to weigh what they want to prioritize as you can't have a perfect package in all areas because if you improve one area your going to impact another area negatively.

If any other team went with this rear suspension no one would call it a mistake, other teams are going there purely to copy red bull, there is no significant performance gains, yes some freeing up of aerodynamic space but nothing significant at all, same as the front suspension, not much mechanical difference that can't be compensated for in others way, still brings its own advantages vs the red bull choice which then also has its disadvantages. This happens every year with ferrari no matter what they do, the Aston Martin looks essentially the same and that's celebrated as a "great design".

No it isn't, again, there are advantages and disadvantages to both and Ferrari already have a stable platform under braking and good mechanical grip, their main suspension issue was bad tyre wear, but that is still a matter of optimisation, not suspension concept . The reason other teams are copying it is purely because the fastest car has it, but an optimised push rod can be just as good as an optimised pull rod, they both have their strengths and weaknesses @zeberto1986

Exactly, Newey essentially stated the opposite to that ferrari guy and i know who i would trust on this one. The man who has knocked it out of the park with the current regs and is pretty much the expert on ground effect in this day and age takes it any day of the week. And yeah, aero is for people who pretty much got the engine where it needs to be and look for more performance. That Enzo guy was quite a simpleton for stating that nonsense on engines.

The duct in the nose is for the driver cooling. The lower side exit on the halo is a S-duct, with the entrance to it being on the floor underneath the undercut. Its taking messy air from the side of the chassis and cleaning it up before feeding it into the sidepod trench. The upper appendage is just a aero appendage
