Hey there! I also want to share a Pride story. I am a straight cis woman from Turkey, and this story happened 8-9 years ago. When I was an undergrad in university, during summer, I was in London for an internship and decided to go to Amsterdam to visit my cousin for a weekend. During that time, I was not very familiar with LGBTQ+ Pride, as, back then, it was not a topic in Turkey that people can speak about very freely. So I was oblivious to the fact that the very same day I had my flight ticket was the day before the Pride Parade in Amsterdam. The plane was filled with people going for the parade. IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING FLIGHT EVER! The joy of the people on board was amazing and inspiring. Everybody was laughing, celebrating, and joking around. Our plane was a beautiful rainbow! I didn't know anyone on that plane, but I joined them, we drank and sang together. It might be the only flight memory that I will remember ever. The very next day, I told my cousin that I want to go to the parade we spent the whole day celebrating everybody's right to be themselves. I even saw some familiar faces from the day before! It was a beautiful beautiful day! It also made me more aware and curious about the obstacles that LGBTQ+ people are facing daily. I read and watched about it more, and tried to educate myself as much as possible. It is so unfair and ridiculous that some people believe they are entitled to decide how others should live their lives. Those people should leave their Stone Age mentalities behind and mind their own business. Also, Jamie, I am glad you exist and shine above all those spiderwebs trying to catch you. Wish you and Shaaba all the happiness that life could possibly bring! All the best! :)

T4T inspo storytime: Recently, I was getting my cat tattooed on me by a trans masc tattoo artist, who's married to my piercer, both casual friends of mine. I'd never talked at length with either of them but they are very cute t4t business owners, both look maybe 28-32ish, I'm 22 for reference. During the tattoo, we began to talk about my upcoming top surgery. He mentioned his healing process and tattooing over the scars, so I asked how long it's been since surgery, and he said 20 years. I was like, hold up, what? Were you 12? And he said, no I was 20, I got it in 2000, making him just over 40, and they had been a couple for 20+ years. I was SHOCKED. But right there in the tattoo chair, I had a really tender moment of, "I have a future, a potentially very bright future filled with love and success" and it really touched me. I've been to pride 8 times over the years and in SF I've seen old trans couples like those that inspired that one kid; and they definitely touched me pre-coming out but being close with trans elders and being out and struggling to find love, jobs, success, and confidence to survive, its moments like those that keep me going.

If being gay was a choice, I still don't think that's an excuse for homophobia. I don't know about these "being gay is a choice" homophobic idiots, but I for one believe in this thing called "freedom of expression", it's this crazy idea that says you can live your life the way you want to so long as you are not causing any harm to anyone, and I have never heard of anyone being harmed by someone being gay. When these people use "it's a choice" as an excuse to be homophobic, I take that as them basically admitting that they don't believe in freedom of expression. Instead, they believe that people should conform to the cultural status quo and any deviation from that should be punished and shamed, you know, a bit like a fascist.

I wanna add something to that. You know those parents who don't want LGBTQ+ representation in the media because it would "turn their kids gay"? Well, I think that also isn't an excuse to be homophobic. Even if gay characters turned your kid gay, why should that stop you from loving your kid unconditionally? A part of being a good parent is to be willing to accept change and grow with your kid. So that argument, just like every argument trying to justify homophobia, is still wrong.

We grew up in an oppressive strict religion that is very anti-LGBT and I always struggled with that. It's a huge reason I wanted to break free. It breaks my heart when I hear about people in my former religion kicking out their LGBT kids. How could anyone not love their child no matter what? I’m a Christian and support the LGBT+ community, and many other Christians do too, but there are still lots of Homophobic and Transphobic “Christians”, but I just want you all to know, we’re not really like that, or at least the real ones of us aren’t. We believe that God and Jesus love everyone no matter their race, sexuality, gender, anything, and we too believe that, and I hate that other “Christians” believe otherwise.

[Warning. I just wrote a long and poorly done rant about how Christians should support LGBTQIA+ and I don't get why some don't. If you don't want to read a long paragraph rant, don't bother, as I said in a messy paragraph what others could in like one sentence.] omgoodness, I get so frustrated with "Christians" who are against LGBTQIA+. Like, I literally don't see it. Yes, maybe they could point you to 2 maybe 3 verses that went against it, but some are likely ministrations, others are opinions of people who aren't Jesus (ie, Paul, who also said that women weren't allowed to speak in church and yet everyone find it easy enough to ignore that nowadays), or are focused on the act of rape and have nothing to actually do with LGBTQIA+ at all (ie, Sodom and Gamora). You know what's everywhere in the Bible? Especially from Jesus Himself, Whom we have the most records of and it the most important to listen to anyway? "Love God," "love one another," and "don't judge other sinners on earth, because we all sin." So yes, Christianity DOES support LGBTQIA+, and those who claim to be Christians but don't support LGBTQIA+ need to recheck with God about how to treat others.

7:55 that story made me tear up. I’m pansexual but I haven’t really came out to my parents yet. They’re Christian and I don’t know exactly how they feel about lgbtq+. Recently, I was finally accepting my sexuality and wanting to talk about it but I closed myself off again. It’s hard because I want to be proud of who I am but there are so many doubts I have. I’m already insecure about myself and have a lot of anxiety, so it’s difficult. I came out to my sister and my close friends, but that’s it. I did tell my mom that I was pansexual over a long note two years ago but we never talked about it. It seemed like she didn’t want to believe it, so she never spoke about it. It’s also my fault that I have talked about it. I don’t know. I’m just kinda here, wondering what my future will be. I still have a long way to go, so I’m somewhat positive that I will come out and be the real me but I’m still scared. God, I needed this. Spent the morning with my strongly opinionated anti-lgbt sister. I’m asexual, and not out to my family. Most of my friends are also LGBT+. My sister, and others in my family, make anti-lgbt remarks often, but my sister explicitly tries to push me into situations I’m not comfortable with, and yet at the same time tries to sl*t shame me for having male friends. Just over the course of a few hours at our local zoo, she made up jokes about “fake genders” and consistently emphasized sex. It’s depressing know that people in my own household are adamantly against LGBT, or won’t stand up against those who are anti-LGBT. (Edit: I’m so sorry I didn’t see any of these replies! I don’t get notifications on KZread, and never thought to check my comment until now. I want to emphasize that I’m okay. Though I live with my parents, my sister does not live with us, and I only see her about once a week. We don’t often interact, and our parents know that we don’t get along well. I have very supportive friends that I’m grateful for, so know that I’m in good hands outside of my family! Thank you all so much for the positivity and support. I truly wish the best for all of you!)

I'm so sorry you have to go through that. I'm from a very liberal US state but my dad's religious side is from Texas, and I was never going to come out to them. Then last year my 86 year old grandfather surprised me by saying randomly "yeah, I wish you and your cousin weren't gay." Being called out that way made me so self conscious but then he finished his thought in his very slow southern drawl with, "Because it will be so much harder for you both than if you weren't. And you don't deserve that for being a different way." And I nearly cried, because I never expected him to just randomly figure it out and then accept it. Only ten years ago he was using the word f*g and saying gay marriage would destroy the country and everyone "choosing" it was going to hell. Then he realized two of his 3 granddaughters are LGBTQIA+ and this religious old man totally changed his opinions. Hold onto the acceptance you get from others in the worst times, even if it's just your friends. And remind yourself that your sister was likely taught that by others, and if you can't change her mind you can get away from her soon enough. But the good news is sometimes someone finding out their family member is LGBTQIA+ can make them rethink their biases and maybe change their mind, like my grandfather. Can I suggest something? The next time she tries anything like that, just bluntly ask her what she would do if you ever came out as LGBTQIA+ Maybe change it from asexual to gay, as that's somehow an easier pill for people to swallow (and you are just asking in a general, not coming out way. Come out any way and time you wish). But even if she reacts horribly, hopefully it can make her rethink it slowly and open her mind. And if not, one day you won't be around her. But hopefully she can get over that disgusting bias. Edit: just realized you said this morning. I hope that means you are already away from her, and that toxicity is limited.

So I missed the call for cute Pride stories, but I have a slightly-related one that I wanted to share anyway: My city usually holds their Pride celebration in July rather than June, for what reason I don't know, but... my then-girlfriend and I were planning to go to this year's since we missed last year's! She had planned to take me and, in her words, "do something special there for me." I had no idea what it was. Unfortunately, due to corona, the Pride celebration was cancelled, so she had to redo her original plan. Instead, on our 2nd anniversary this year (which was also in July, haha), she sat me down, sent me a bunch of screenshots of chats we'd had before we'd gotten together, and followed it up with a little essay about how much she loves me and how much she loves being with me, all that cute stuff. At the end, she proposed to me! She apologized that her original plan couldn't happen -- which was that she was going to propose at Pride -- but she hoped that the method she used would make up for it. So, yeah, we're engaged now :3

We don't get parades but my friends and I all went out to celebrate the supreme court(US) ruling on same sex marriage a number of years ago. I also remember meeting and counter-protesting the west borough baptist church in the early 2000's. They are crazy and scary, but it was also nice seeing how small they were. I have to tell this story now. The free mom hugs reminded me of it. My first every pride I went to just so happened to be the first pride my university town ever had. I had planned on just watching. But since it was such a small event(my large city pride standards) everyone simply joined in the walk together after it passed them. As we were walking, there was a group of old southern black ladies. Everyone completely dressed in a different color of the rainbow. Im talking hair and makeup and clothes. Everything. They had signs saying "Even if your grandmother doesnt accept you, we do!" And giving out hugs. At the time I had my hair died neon green. Not for pride, just cause. The lady in green and I hugged and were like "love your hair!!!!" We all got called baby and honey. And it nearly brought me to tears. It was the cutest thing ever.

The pride stories reminded me of that time I was in my first pride parade with rainbow youth and I noticed that ahead of my a bunch of people were going off to the side to look at something I couldn’t see, causing a small traffic jam in the middle of the parade. Turns out someone on the sidelines was holding the cutest dog in their arms, and it was wearing a rainbow bandana so everyone was holding up the parade to pet this adorable dog and honestly? Best time ever

I know I’m late, but I went to my first pride this year. I saw someone I know and they had commented how I didn’t decorate my vehicle for pride (it was a caravan thing) and I told them that my parents aren’t accepting of pride, and these two amazing women beside me and my best friend, gave me my first ever pride gear, and I was bawling. I still have my pride stuff up, but hidden in case my family ever comes over.

I know this is late but ive got a story I recently found out that I was demipansexual and I really wanted to tell my best friend. I also had a trans gf. This thing is that my best friend is a really hardcore christian so I was really worried about coming out to her. I had told her before that I was aromantic and ace(because that's what I believed I was for the longest time) She was hanging out at my house and then I had to take her home so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to come out to her. I told her I was wrong about being aro/ace and said I was demi and pan and that I had a gf that was trans. SUSPENSE TIME!!!! She accepted me!!!!!! I even asked, "Will anything change between us?" And she replied, "Of course not, why would it?" AHHHHHH It just made me so happy And that there are some Christians that support the LGBTQ+ community

I remember my first pride parade that I was in, I was 5. I'd gone to pride and watched every year since I was born, but my mom got a new job at an HIV testing clinic and she was able to be in the parade instead of just watching. So, it was the end of the parade, I was tired, hot, and so so so happy. We had been handing out bananas, and I remember there was this drag queen and her friends that came up to me and showed me a banana I'd handed out to them at the start of the parade. They said that they were anxious to be in a float because it was their first time in drag at the parade. They told me that seeing my happy little face at such a young age just gave them the courage to go on. The one who came up to me first gave me their tiara. I still have it in my room next to a stuffed banana my mom bought me from a vendor that year. I've been in the parade every year since then, and I look forward to it every year.

This whole choice business 🤔🌈 now hear me out here; I've been thinking about this.... If people think it's a CHOICE - does that mean they have LGBTQIAP tendencies but don't act on them...🤔 I mean, why would they assume it's a choice if they "know" an alternative..... Maybe they're all a little more on the spectrum than they'd have us believe 🤭🌈
